Why Goal Setting Matters?

When students of all ages learn how to set and work toward goals, they develop resilience, confidence, and the tools to thrive—in and out of school.

Teaching children and teens how to set goals:

  • Builds confidence and motivation

  • Helps with focus and time management

  • Encourages responsibility and independence
  • Promotes a growth mindset (“I can improve with effort!”)

It's important to break down big goals into achievable steps. It allows kids to look at where they are now, where they want to go, and to plan how to get there.

Use the SMART Goal Framework

SMART is a tool that helps students create clear, doable goals—whether for school, home, sports, or life!

  • Specific — What exactly do you want to do?
  • Measurable — How will you track progress?
  • Achievable — Is it realistic to achieve right now?
  • Relevant — Why does it matter to you?
  • Time-bound — When will it be done?

For example, instead of just saying, "We're going to increase attendance in weekly sports practices" try using the SMART Goal Framework:

  • "We will increase sports practice attendance by 5% from last semester by teaching members tangible skills that they can apply during games by the end of the season."

What Families Can Do

  • Help your child choose a goal that matters to them
  • Break big goals into small, manageable steps
  • Talk about setbacks as a chance to learn
  • Offer praise and encouragement
  • Celebrate progress, not perfection!

Start Early: Planning for College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR)

It’s crucial for students to begin planning for College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) early on—here’s why starting early makes a real difference:

  • Exposure to CCMR pathways (like Career & Technical Education (CTE), industry certifications, etc.) helps students discover their strengths and interests long before senior year. LISD introduces these programs when students are young so they can become aware of all of the options!
  • Dual-credit coursework builds crucial skills—academically and socially—helping students succeed in college if chosen, or transition into high-paying jobs immediately out of high school.
  • With informed pathways and structured supports, students make empowered choices—whether that’s college, career training, the military, or a combination—leading to better long-term outcomes.
