Market Day Success!

Market Day was a huge hit, and our third-grade entrepreneurs truly shined. After kicking off their economics unit with a trip to Chick-fil-A, students spent weeks learning about goods, services, supply and demand, and making smart financial choices.

Their creativity and business skills were on full display. Students set up unique stores, including a photo booth, handmade soaps, potted succulents, and lemonade stands. They set prices, advertised their products, and made real-time decisions about earning, spending, and saving.

The entire student body had the opportunity to shop (using Dawg Dollars), allowing all students to experience real-world economic principles firsthand. They practiced making choices, comparing costs and benefits, and managing their money wisely.

Thank you to everyone who supported them and helped make this event a success. Excellent job, third grade!

A Recipe for Learning

During the eighth-grade cross-curricular unit, students engaged in various enriching activities, including expository writing, exploring connections to Georgia, practicing measurement conversions, and analyzing physical and chemical changes. Essentially, they crafted recipes!

Students were tasked with researching recipes that held significance to Georgia and their own family traditions. The culmination of their efforts will be presented in a digital cookbook. Within its pages, you'll discover a delightful array of Southern classics such as blueberry cobbler and fried chicken, alongside unique culinary delights like mozzarella in carrozza with tomatoes and peaches.

With help from parents and teachers, the grade shared a smorgasbord of these delicious dishes with their classmates as they prepared to head off for their class trip to Chattanooga and Dahlonega.

The eighth-grade team is thrilled to share this new recipe collection and hopes everyone will savor the recipes as much as they did during their tasting!

Matchmaking

Mrs. Meeks Honors US History students each conducted research on a different reformer of the Progressive Era including such reformers as W.E.B. Du Bois, Alice Paul, Jane Addams, Jacob Riis, and Booker T. Washington . For their presentations, they participated in a "speed dating" activity in which they got to know about the lives, objectives, and accomplishments of the other reformers in the room. Students then used that information to find their best match.

Home Openers

It was great to have our varsity soccer teams back in action on the home field last night! The girls team beat United Homeschool 5-2 with goals by Annalise Digby, Sydnie Dimmlich, Leah Lumpkin, and two goals by Laney Brewer. Bella Weimer and Ava St. Germain both played goalkeeper and kept UHS to two goals. The Lady Dawgs improve to 3-1-1 on the season!

The boys game vs. Riverside Prep went into double overtime after Ashton Grossman assisted Eli Rainford for the equalizer – making it 1-1. The Bulldogs fell short in the penalty shootout.

Throwers' Spotlight

The GWA track team ran well at home last Thursday, racking up 14 first place finishes and 18 personal best times/marks.

Our throwers had a great night, winning the shot put in all four categories: Roland Crutchfield (high school boys), McKenna Rutledge (high school girls), Jaydn Smith (middle school girls), and Maverick Link (middle school boys). Maverick and Jaydn also won the middle school discus as well. The high school girls swept the shot put with McKenna, Kayden Owens, and Ashley Hill placing top 3; Kayden and Ashley also took the top 2 spots in discus.

Aiden Townsend threw personal bests in both the shot and discus; Grant Hamilton and Jadyn both threw a personal best in the shot.

The high school team will run at home again today while our middle school athletes are off enjoying their class trips.

Bulldogs in Barcelona

This week nine eighth-grade students are immersed in Spanish language and culture with their host families in Barcelona, Spain at St. Paul’s School. The students attend class during the day and experience the customs and traditions of their host families in the evenings.

Dancing Dawgs

UGA Salsa Club members visited GWA last week to teach students some classic dances in the Hispanic culture. From merengue to salsa and even bachata too, our sixth graders had a blast learning new steps and turns to add to their dance moves. Special thanks to Mrs. Hatcher for making the arrangements for this fun activity!

New Reads

To wrap up our celebration of Read Across America week, students brought in gently used books to swap with others! It was a great way for classmates to get new books to read!
