October is here and we're exited to be well into the school year! Thank you for being such important partners in your student's learning and growth.

As we move into this part of the year, please take time to check your student's grades regularly and reach out to teachers with questions or concerns. Monitoring attendance is important too, as consistent attendance helps with students staying connected to school and keeping up with the learning. Lastly, we could use your support talking with your child about what is appropriate to bring to school. We are having an increase of students bringing toys, gum and other non-instructional items. Many times these items distract the student or peers during learning time. Please talk with your child about what is appropriate to bring to school each day.

We have a lot of fun events coming up, such as STAR celebrations, and assemblies that help provide the fun as we get into the school year. We appreciate all you do to help our students thrive. Please read on to learn a little more about events happening this month.

As always, thank you & go North!

With Gratitude,

Monika, Michael & Holly

Fall Conferences Fall Conferences

Across our district, two specific days each fall are designated as non-school days, dedicated to Family/Teacher Conferences. This year, those two days are Monday, November 2nd, and Tuesday, November 3rd. School will not be in session on those days as we hold both for needed opportunities to connect with our families. School will resume for our students that Wednesday, November 4th and will conclude that week, on Friday, November 6th, with a 12:20pm dismissal day.

Our format for Fall Conferences is an intentional mix of in-person and scheduled options. We will offer open windows to provide families with opportunities to meet with each of their child's teachers. Additionally, teachers will be able to schedule in-person or online conferences to discuss specific needs. Additional information is forthcoming but for now, please see the below schedule for open and schedule windows on 11/2 and 11/3.

What are STAR Advisory Blocks? What are STAR Advisory Blocks?

At North, we utilize a regular STAR block to connect with our students beyond their "graded" classes. This block occurs after third period, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The intent for these near-daily blocks are "advisory" in nature as we work to ever-improve how we grow and support our students.

During STAR, we structure everything from academic interventions (including iReady Pro) to teaching specific skills that support executive functioning. Students can complete i-ready lessons at home to continue to get just the right instruction that they need. For more information about i-ready please see the guide below.

Forthcoming Student Surveys Forthcoming Student Surveys

The month of October includes a number of student surveys, scheduled for Monday and Thursdays across the coming weeks. Below is the schedule for each of these surveys. Further below is information pertaining to each survey.

October Student Survey Schedule:

  • 10/5: Fall Student SEL Survey
  • 10/8: Fall Student SEL Survey (makeups)
  • 11/23: Equal Opportunity Schools, Student Perceptions Survey

Fall Student SEL Survey (10/2): Each fall, our students join others across our Everett Public Schools in participating in a student survey specific to social/emotional needs. The data this surveys yields will help inform/guide our schoolwide efforts to improve the learning and social environments of North. This year, the Panorama Social and Emotional Learning survey is scheduled for Thursday, October 2nd and will take place during our normal STAR advisory block. Most students will complete their survey in a single, 20-minute setting.

Equal Opportunity Schools, Student Perceptions Survey (11/23): We are thrilled to begin our second year of partnership with the education non-profit organization, Equal Opportunity Schools (EOS). Our partnership with EOS provides our North team with an opportunity to better examine the learning culture within our school and increase student participation in challenging coursework. We began this partnership last year and as we did last fall, our students will participate in a brief related survey on Thursday, 10/30, during our normal STAR block.

EOS Survey questions will ask students about their career aspirations, educational goals, which school staff they are most likely to seek support from, their subject area interests, and give an opportunity to share in their own words what they want the school to know about them. Survey responses will inform the creation of student-specific “insight cards” that will assist our team in better connecting each student with opportunities and support structures across this year (and beyond).

Our North PTA is planning and preparing for a forthcoming North favorite, the Scarecrow Social. This annual, pre-Halloween event is purposefully family-friendly and open to our entire North Everett community. This year's event is planned for the evening of Friday, October 23rd, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, here on our North campus. Students and families are encouraged to break out their favorite Halloween costumes as part of the festivities. Planned for this year's Scarecrow Social is our Trunk & Treat, a Chili Cookoff, and other family-friendly activities. This is a stop-in-whenever event so please mark Friday, October 23rd on your family calendar.

Please see the below needs associated with helping our PTA host this event. If you can volunteer and/or donate in any regard, please contact our PTA at northmspta@gmail.com. Thank you and see you on Friday, October 23rd!

Natural Leaders Natural Leaders

We are a Multicultural Parent Group that supports families who may face language and cultural barriers. Through the work of our Natural Leaders, we build strong relationships with families, promote inclusion, and ensure that all families feel valued, connected, and heard within their school community.

We are always looking for new families to join our group to continue growing and strengthening our support network. By working together, we create a connection between home and school, support our children's educational journey, and create opportunities for families to make a meaningful impact on their school community.

We are very happy to be joined by new and returning families at North Middle School. We recognize that when families are represented and have more presence at their schools, children achieve their highest potential.

Attendance Matters Attendance Matters

As students enter middle school, regular attendance becomes even more important to their present and future opportunities to succeed. In fact, by the sixth grade, absenteeism becomes the most significant red flags signaling that a student is not on track to graduate high school. Eighth grade attendance rates of 90% and above (no less than 18 absences in a year) is a stronger predictor of high school graduation than eighth grade test scores. As such, we view regular attendance with the utmost importance at North as our STARs cannot learn at high levels if they are not present for these opportunities.

As your child/children do need to be away from school for illness and other understandable reasons, please know that you will receive an automated message confirming your child's absence. This communication will allow you to confirm their absence/reason for our records. You can also excuse your child's absence by email or phone (information/link below).
