This Week @ PS 88Q
January 19, 2026
Reminder: No School MONDAY: January 19th. MLK Day
A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others".
As we head into the week ahead, we want to share an important update and reflection with our school community.
Our original plan for our Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Winter Articles Drive, and we remain grateful for the generosity our families always show. However, in the wake of the devastating fire here in Ridgewood, we felt a responsibility to pause, reflect, and respond in a way that allows our students to truly learn, lead, and advocate.
In that spirit, we have shifted our plans and expanded our MLK Day of Service into two weeks of service and learning, with a focus on emergency preparedness, community care, and awareness.
This change creates meaningful opportunities for our students to:
Learn what to do in an emergency
Understand how families can prepare and stay safe
Advocate for preparedness at home and in the community
Serve others in tangible, purposeful ways
Over the next two weeks, our students will become Safety Ambassadors, building Emergency “To-Go” Bags for their own families and helping prepare bags and resources for seniors at the Peter Cardella Senior Center. This work honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy by showing our children that service is not just something we do for one day — it is how we care for one another every day.
We hope this extended focus helps raise awareness, build readiness, and strengthen our collective sense of responsibility to one another as a community.
Thank you, as always, for your partnership, compassion, and support. We are incredibly proud of the way our PS 88Q Eagles continue to show empathy, leadership, and heart — especially in moments when it matters most.

Voices of PS 88Q: Our Podcasting Program Has Launched!
This week, PS 88Q proudly launched our student podcasting program, giving our Eagles a powerful new platform to learn, create, and share their voices.
Through podcasting, students are being introduced to high-value, real-world skills at an early age — including speaking clearly, listening actively, planning questions, storytelling, collaboration, and using digital tools with purpose. These are skills that will serve them well as they grow, whether in academics, careers, or leadership roles.
Most importantly, podcasting provides our students with a venue to tell their stories and amplify the stories of others. Our young reporters are learning that their ideas matter, their questions are important, and their voices can inform, inspire, and connect our community.
By sparking interest early, we are helping students discover new passions, build confidence, and see themselves as creators — not just consumers — of media.
We can’t wait to share what our PS 88Q podcasters create next. Stay tuned… the microphones are on, and our Eagles are ready to soar!
And there is a great story of how this came to be. Ms. Herman and I were at a leadership conference in October, when we heard from across the room "Ms. Herman?" Up walks Steven Jones, a former student of Ms. Herman from her High School teaching days. Mr. Jones told us his amazing journey since high school and his new venture. And here is is, from How Can I? https://www.howcani.org/program

From Page to Stage: Literature to Life Brings The Giver to PS 88Q
This week, students in Ms. Egland’s, Mr. Zielson’s, and Mr. Rodeschin’s classes had the unique opportunity to take part in a powerful Literature to Life residency, experiencing the page-to-stage transformation of the novel The Giver.
Literature to Life is a nationally recognized arts-in-education program that brings acclaimed works of literature to life through professional theatrical performance. Using a solo actor, the program presents carefully selected excerpts directly from the text, allowing students to experience literature in a dynamic, emotional, and deeply engaging way — while remaining faithful to the author’s words.
As part of the residency, students watched an excerpt from The Giver performed by a solo actor who used voice, movement, and expression to illuminate the story’s themes and characters. The performance was nothing short of amazing.
Our students responded with thoughtful questions, strong reactions, and meaningful discussion, grappling with big ideas such as choice, memory, individuality, and what it means to live in a community. The experience sparked curiosity, deepened comprehension, and encouraged students to think critically about the text in new and powerful ways.
This residency highlights the impact of arts integration and shows our students that literature is not only something to read — it is something to experience, question, and feel. We are incredibly proud of the insight, engagement, and reflection our PS 88Q students demonstrated throughout this memorable learning experience.
Report Cards: What Do You Think?
At PS 88Q, we are always looking for ways to strengthen communication, instruction, and the overall experience for our students and families. As part of that commitment, the PS 88Q Administration, in partnership with our Instructional Leadership Teams and all of our teachers, has begun important work on developing a clearer, more standards-aligned grading policy and report card for the 2026–2027 school year.
Your perspective matters deeply in this process.
We would love to hear your thoughts about the NYC Public Schools report card that we currently use — what works well, what can be improved, and what information you would find most helpful as a parent or caregiver.
Please take a few moments to share your feedback using the link below. Your input will directly help guide our planning and ensure our future report card reflects the needs of our families and the learning of our students.
Shout Outs
Each week, I complete a similar newsletter for our staff, with all the information they need for the week. Part of the newsletter is a Shout Out section, which is always full! If you have a shout out for any of our staff, please click here, and I will be sure to share it in the Staff Newsletter!
