Geography with Ms. Trenkle

This week in Geography we have been steeped in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) and our map quiz prep. Students had a review day for their SSA map quiz on Wednesday and took their quiz on Thursday. Aspen is updated to reflect these scores. After the quiz, and on Friday, students learned about the impact of colonialism in Africa. On Monday, students will take a DCPS RCT pulling on their knowledge of Africa through maps and based on their colonialism reading.

Next week students will continue to explore the cultural side of our unit by defining diaspora and learning about the African Diaspora through case studies.

We have finally finished our giant map and started to post the amazing postcards we have received on our map! We have had a great time reading postcards sent to us by so many family, friends, and YOU! Thanks for sending us postcards and keep them coming!!!!

Be sure to check out our GeoNewsletter, written by our own GeoScribes! Follow along and see the class through your students’ eyes! https://secure.smore.com/n/nbc3t

On Orientation Day students shared a song they would like to add to our class playlist. This Spotify playlist can be found here:

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7nWMWui4YoJ5WUxe9zqWIY?si=hV7LhQaNSu2SzPI6k58-QQ

A final request—if you, or anyone you know is traveling, and can send a postcard to our class, or post a picture with description from their travels, it would be greatly appreciated! Please see the adjoining flyer.

Pictures that are on our Kathmandu Can Do Attitude board can also be found here:

Science with Ms. Johnson

Dear Scientists,

This week, students wrapped up their Plate Motion unit with the summative assessment on Wednesday. After that, they began the Rock Transformation unit with the Amplify pre-test and a reading about rock transformation.

Next week will include a Gizmo online activity, a rock transformation simulation, our first Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) write-up, and a fun lab where students will create different types of rocks using crayons!

October 31st marks the end of the first term. Please support your student in submitting all late work by next Friday so it can be graded in time.

No new root words until November!

The following is an invitation for a free, fun, science-event for the whole family that is happening this Saturday, October 25 at the Carnegie Science's Earth and Planets Laboratory (EPL). At the Earth and Planets Laboratory (EPL), scientists study everything from the rocks beneath our feet to the planets and stars above. It's where researchers unlock the secrets of earthquakes, volcanoes, meteorites, and even the origins of life on Earth. Advanced registration is encouraged but not required. English Language Arts with Ms. Byrns

This week students had fun watching some short video clips from familiar movies to learn about different character archetypes. Students discussed the ally, the foil, the antagonist and the sage. Ask your 6th grader for examples of these archetypes in the books they are reading or the shows they are watching.

Next week we will wrap up Unit 1. Students have made significant growth with their paragraph writing and next week we will translate that to short essays. Friday we will lighten things up with some spooky creative writing.

Next week is the last week for students to turn in their Term 1 reading projects. I’m truly impressed with what they’ve done so far!

Math 6 Resource with Mr. Shufelt

This week, we continued practicing with ratios and understanding the relationship between two quantities. We introduced the concept of equivalent ratios and the tools of ratio tables and double number lines.

Next week is the last week of Term 1. Please check Aspen to see if you are missing any homework assignments and ensure that you’re caught up on iReady lessons.

As a reminder, all students have one iReady lesson due every Monday. By 10/27 students should have passed 8 total iReady lessons. Please reach out to me if there is any issue with students completing the iReady lessons at home. Pear assignments are opened on Mondays and Wednesdays and due Wednesday and Friday.

Please note that I’ve also uploaded a document for all the notes for our first unit to the class Canvas page and I will continue to periodically upload future notes as we progress.

Library Corner with Mr. Reichlan

Mr. Reichlen has created a web collection of school and public library links to supplement the CommonLit 360 ELA curriculum. The link has now been updated to include texts for Unit 2. Here students can find access points to school and public library resources for recommended texts with additional resources that support unit themes. Students can checkout and place items on hold or checkout digital copies from a device. The collection is updated throughout the school year to provide access to recommended titles as units change.
