CTE Month: Construction Trades students building walls, ice shanties and bat houses

It has been a busy few months for students in the Construction Trades classes at Davison High School. Here is a rundown of recent activities:

  • Students in Construction I are learning how to cut studs and frame project walls. The 4-foot by 4-foot walls will be sheeted with plywood next and then roofed. Mr. Derek DeWitt, Instructional Assistant, said these same walls will be used for roofing, electrical, plumbing, insulation and drywall lessons. "This curriculum touches base on most aspects of construction," Mr. DeWitt explained. "The students learn the basics of each trade and what careers they may potentially like. The importance is two-fold; they either discover it as a potential career or just have the ability to do the basics of their own home improvement or maintenance down the road."

  • Construction II students have been building ice shanties for their Davison High School Fishing Club. Students are building the shanties from scratch. "They learned how to trace and cut the pieces and how to put it all together," Mr. DeWitt said. The shanties were painted this week and after intersession students will put in the windows and trim them out, Mr. DeWitt said.

  • Student Mercedez Newberry made two bat houses for Ms. Pam Ruggiero for the Davison High School Environmental Club.

Auto Tech student answers questions on auto website and wins contest

Davison High School senior and Auto Technology II student Porter Meinburg is the lucky winner after correctly answering questions on the auto website WrenchWay.

The website allows students to take sample test questions, respond to poll questions and share thoughts on industry topics. Students earn points for every test they take or when they respond to poll questions.

"The website is open to students all over the country," said Andrew Michalik, Auto Technology Teacher. "It's a lottery drawing so the more responses Porter had correct gave him more points for a chance to win."

And win he did. Porter won $500 for himself and $500 for the DHS Auto program.

Michalik said the main goal of the website is to bring shops, schools and students together to try and help find jobs for students, donations for schools and qualified techs for the auto industry.

DHS Fishing Club students try their hand at ice fishing

Last Saturday, the Davison Cardinal Fishing Club went ice fishing on West Lake in Lapeer. The students caught bluegill, pumpkin seeds, warmouth, rock bass, pike and bass (bass were released as they are out of season).

"We had a wonderful DNR Officer stop in and chat with the students for quite a while and even had a few hot dogs with us," said Mr. Derek DeWitt, who co-sponsors the Fishing Club with DCS Security Officer Mr. Troy Simpson. "Believe it or not, his name is Officer Cardinal!! We had quite a good laugh about the irony!"

DHS, DAE names Students of the Month for February

Congratulations to the following students from Davison High School and Davison Alternative Education named as Student of the Month for February.

9th grade - Aubrey Bowman

Nominated by: Mrs. Leslie Clark

Aubrey is an exceptional, all-around student who follows the Cardinal Code on a daily basis. She comes to class every day on time with the sweetest smile on her face. Her kind and friendly demeanor makes her an absolute pleasure to have in class. She is attentive, stays focused throughout class, and always has her work completed with the highest quality. Not only is she an amazing student, but she is also an incredible student-athlete. Her hard work and dedication have driven her to be ranked third in the state for wrestling! Aubrey is an all-star Freshman, and I cannot wait to see her excel over the next four years.

10th grade - Robert Smith

Nominated by: Mr. Matt Dipzinski

I would like to nominate Robert Smith for Student of the Month due to his outstanding leadership skills both on and off the basketball court. Robert upholds the Cardinal Code with integrity, showing respect for his peers, teachers, and coaches. He consistently goes above and beyond in his studies and also volunteering within the community. Robert consistently motivates his teammates to excel and demonstrates exceptional sportsmanship during games. His ability to remain calm under pressure and make quick decisions under intense circumstances sets him apart as a natural leader. Additionally, overall, Robert's dedication to excellence in all aspects of his life makes him a deserving candidate for recognition as Student of the Month.

11th grade - Hudson Lawton

Nominated by: Mr. Marty Quertermous

This nomination comes not from the classroom but rather the conduct of Hudson outside of school at a Swim Meet. We were at a meet amongst other schools competing in the county area, and Hudson took it upon himself to encourage other divers and tried to help them before the competition. Hudson was very Courteous, Attentive, Respectful, and Supportive in his actions to look out for another student from a different school. I find this behavior very Dependable as a coach, to witness him living the Cardinal Code out in public amongst other high school students. I believe this act is first hand evidence of the Cardinal Code shown outside of the classroom and a perfect representation of Davison.

12th grade - Samantha Miller

Nominating teacher: Mr. Greg Maynard

I am writing this letter of reference for Samantha Miller, who is currently a student in my class. In the time that I have known her, I have been consistently impressed by her character and her dedication to her studies. Samantha is an extraordinary student who embodies the core values of respect and dependability. She treats both her classmates and teachers with kindness and courtesy, making her a joy to have in the classroom. Her respectful nature fosters a positive and cooperative learning environment, and her peers often look to her for guidance and support.

DAE: Bailey Chappell

Nominated by: Taylor Brooks

Bailey is new to DAE this year and doing GREAT in her online Health class. She is typically always 20 assignments or more ahead. You never have to remind her to get to work, when she has completed her work in my class she will work on other work or read a book. The progress in her class shows how attentive and responsible she is. I can always depend on her to have her work done and she has always been respectful to me and other students, Bailey would make a Phenomenal Student of the Month!

Students celebrate 100 days of school

Last week students at Central, Gates, Hill, Siple and Thomson elementary buildings celebrated 100 days of school. At several buildings, students and staffed dressed up like they were 100 years old. At Central Elementary, first graders walked the red carpet to show off their 100-day fashions, decorated with 100 trinkets (stickers, buttons, etc.)

Students throughout the district also made 100-day hats, sported 100-day glasses and participated in a variety of activities to celebrate 100 days of learning with their classmates. Check out our video featuring some of our students celebrating 100 days of school by clicking on the link below.
