The Doty Digest

January 26nd 2024
Principal's Corner
Greetings Doty Families,
It has been a crazy month here with the weather and illnesses going around for both staff and students. I haven’t worked a full week all month and I appreciate all of your patience with my slow email responses of late. I’m not sure how things will go after today -several of Miss Julie’s class members have determined that I am going to jail. It’s not yet decided which one of them is driving me there, I’m thinking they are still looking for a really small car! (Recess was interesting yesterday!)
In February, we will be conducting our part of a district-wide climate survey for students, families, and staff. I am looking forward to seeing the results. I want Doty to be a welcoming and accepting environment for all and if there are ways that we can improve, I would like to hear of them!
This month we administered our new reading assessment and have started looking at the results of it. So far it looks like it is going to give us really helpful information. This assessment looks at the building blocks of reading. If a student is struggling it will help us be able to really target which skills we should work on with them. I am interested in what the assessment will show us over time.
Report cards will be sent home soon. You will notice that they look a bit different than they have in the past. A group of teachers has worked on them to make them more reflective of what we are teaching. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s teacher if you have any questions. Report cards are snapshots in time and give an overview of where your student is at. Conversations and conferences are always the best way to get a complete picture of your student as a learner.
As always, thank you for sharing your students with us!
Gillian
Notes from the Nurse
“The mission of the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile Program is to provide quality dental services to Vermont children in selected underserved communities, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.”
Hello Doty Families. Does your child need dental care? Most dentists recommend our children see their dentist every 6 months for a cleaning, maybe x-rays, and other treatment. I am speaking with Plainfield Health Clinic about scheduling the Mobile Dental Van to come to school in the spring. That way, you won’t have to leave work to drive your child to the dentist, and your student will be away from class just long enough to get their cleaning and dental check up done.
If you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, please let me know. We need 10 students signed up in order to schedule the van. The Dental Van has the capacity to see 20 children a day. They are happy to see any child who already sees the dentist at Plainfield Health, anybody who is without a dentist, or anybody having difficulty getting to their dentist. Please email me at lfaesy@u32.org if interested. Thank you and have a great weekend. -Nurse Lydia
Dr. Martin Luther King - 3/4
3/4 spent the last few weeks learning about the Civil Rights Movement and the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After comparing multiple versions of the story of his life, we created a collaborative portrait to hang in the hallway. Everyone was responsible for a different piece of the portrait!
Pie Breakfast

$5 per person OR $20 per family
If you are able to contribute a pie (sweet, savory, Gluten -free, dairy free, pizzas, quiche or more!) please fill out the following form:

We are also looking for items to add to our Silent Auction. If you are a small business, crafter, home baker or have home items in good condition ready for regifting, please consider sending an item into the office so we can ready it for auction!
Winter Concert
Dear Parents,
Mark your calendars! The Doty Winter concert is Monday, Feb. 19 at 6:00. All students grades K-6 are invited to perform. The theme of the concert is "Mythical Creatures". More information will be coming in the following weeks. We hope to see you there!
Report Cards
This year you will notice a few changes in your student's report card. We have expanded our reporting in literacy in order to provide families with more information about how students are doing relative to our expectations in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. We hope that these changes provide a more detailed picture of students' current performance and reflect the emphasis that we place on literacy during the elementary years.
We also revised the format of the report card so that our teachers' comments are more prominent. Our teachers spend a lot of time thoughtfully writing comments for each student, and we want to make sure that they are evident to families.
We generate our report cards through Infinite Campus, our student information system. We wish that we could enlarge the font and make some other formatting changes, but we are currently unable to do so.
We continuously examine our practices related to teaching and learning, and communicating with students and families about student performance is one aspect of this practice. The school climate survey contains some questions about the report card. We welcome your feedback and will use it to inform our future work.
For your convenience, the WCUUSD Guide to the Elementary Report Card is linked here.
Report cards will be mailed home on Friday, February 2.

Worcester Community Lunch
Each week Doty students with with Beth, one of our paraeducators, to create a vegan soup for the Worcester Community Lunch with ingredients provided by the Community Lunch team. Through this students learn various skills such as math (measuring ingredients, cooking temperatures), nutrition, community service and impact, and cooking.
If you would like to donate vegan items to support this wonderful learning opportunity and to supplement the ingredients provided to Doty, we have a small donation box inside the front door of Doty.
Below Doty students are delivering this week's soup to the community lunch.
Winter Wellness
Each winter Doty students get time throughout the week to explore outdoor activities such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
