Dear Families,

It’s hard to believe that October is already here! The leaves are beginning to change, the mornings are getting a little cooler, and our school is settling into the wonderful rhythm of a new school year. There is something special about this time of year, the excitement of learning, the changing seasons, and the many opportunities we have to come together as a school community.

As we prepare for parent-teacher conferences, I want to take a moment to share just how much these conversations mean. Your partnership matters. Our teachers know your children as learners, and you know them in so many other important ways. When we bring those perspectives together, we have a much fuller picture of each child and can work together to help them feel successful, supported, and confident at school.

Conferences are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your child’s accomplishments, talk about their growth, ask questions, and set goals together. Even when things are going well, connecting with your child’s teacher helps strengthen the relationship between home and school. We truly value the time you take to be part of these conversations, and we encourage every family to attend. Conferences will be held the first full week in October so be on the lookout for information from your child’s teacher.

One of the things I am especially excited about this month is our school-wide pumpkin carving with buddy classrooms! Our students will have the opportunity to carve pumpkins together and enjoy some good old-fashioned fall fun with their classmates. This experience would not be possible without the generosity of our PTCO and the donations they received. We are so thankful for the families and community members who contributed and for our PTCO for helping create this special experience for our students. These are the moments that often become some of our favorite school memories!

Thank you for trusting us with your children each day and for all that you do at home to support their learning and growth. We are incredibly fortunate to have such caring and involved families as part of our school community.

As we head into this beautiful fall season, I hope your families find time to enjoy the simple things; crunchy leaves under your feet, cozy evenings, and maybe a little pumpkin carving of your own!

Wishing you and your family a happy, healthy, and joy-filled October. Thank you for helping make our school such a special place to learn, grow, and belong.

The More You Know, the Easier It Is to Learn The More You Know, the Easier It Is to Learn

The More You Know, the Easier It Is to Learn

Albert Einstein famously noted that compound interest is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. Interestingly, learning works much the same way! This past summer, I completed a state Department of Education literacy program called LETRS, which provided an in-depth look at how children learn to read and write. One of the most striking insights from the training is that the more background knowledge and vocabulary children have, the easier it is for them to grasp new ideas. Cognitive psychologist Daniel Willingham captured this perfectly, writing, “Knowledge is not only cumulative, it grows exponentially.”

Families play an incredible role in nurturing this growth through everyday shared experiences. Simply chatting with your children about your day or exploring their interests builds essential background knowledge, expands vocabulary, and helps them reason through complex concepts like metaphors. Studies consistently show that hearing and using words in meaningful contexts helps children truly understand and apply them.

Simple Ways to Support Your Child at Home

  • Share stories from your day: Narrate simple activities as you do them together or tell them a fun story about your workday.

  • Ask open-ended questions: Invite your child to tell you about a book they are reading, a game they played, or a show they watched.

  • Use "big words" with confidence: Children are natural language sponges. They pick up word meanings easily through tone, facial expressions, and context—no formal definitions required!

  • Prioritize face-to-face interaction: Research confirms that interactive conversations with people are far more impactful for language learning than passive screen time.

Thank you for being such wonderful partners in your child's learning journey. Happy reading!

Parents,

On Monday, September 21, 2026, we started using a system called PickUp Patrol to help us track dismissals. PickUp Patrol provides you with a convenient way to make changes to your child’s dismissal plans and helps ensure that students are accurately dismissed each day.

How It Works:

  1. Your child’s regular dismissal plan will be entered into the system. This is called their Default Plan.

  2. Whenever your child is doing something other than their Default Plan, you’ll submit a Plan Change via PickUp Patrol. Examples of a Plan Change include:

    1. Your child normally rides the bus, but is getting picked up today

    2. Your child is getting picked up by someone other than yourself.

    3. Your child has a doctor's appointment and will be leaving early.

  3. When the change is submitted, our school will be notified, and we’ll relay the change to your child & their teacher.

REGISTER: Please email mdevito@mrsd.org for a Welcome Email. Mrs. DeVito will resend you the Welcome Email from PickUp Patrol that will have a link to set up your account. The parent portal is free and can be accessed from your phone or computer. The link in your registration email will be live for 48 hours. As soon as you receive it, please log in and confirm your child’s default plan.

âť—Thank you for using PickUp Patrol to make safety a priority and to ensure our dismissal process is efficient for all.
