The Weekly Highlander

Thank you for your patience and support as we have adjusted PE, break, and lunch to address the heat and air quality. We are monitoring the AQMD site daily to determine if we will need to make adjustments and have asked all staff to use the air purifiers in their classrooms. The well-being of our students and staff is our first priority.

This week cross country practice will start on Monday the 16th. If your child has signed up for cross country, you have received a detailed schedule for the season. Students are currently creating and organizing clubs in their area of interest. Club applications are due this Wednesday, September 18th. The application is a requirement for students wanting to form clubs this semester.

We have our first PTA meeting of the year on Tuesday at 1:30 pm in the library. We also have a Zoom option available, the link is listed in this newsletter. PTA will host the Fall Honor Roll social on Wednesday during the tutorial period. The social is for 7th and 8th graders who made Honor Roll last semester (Spring of 2024). Next week, PTA will also host Fun Friday at Lunch. Our parent volunteers bring out games and activities for our students to enjoy. On Wednesday, September 25th, PTA is hosting our annual Color Run; we are so excited about this annual community event.

If you are interested in supporting Club Rush at Hewes, please consider buying supplies from the Amazon Wish List. Poster boards, decorations, and treats for the club rush tables are great to have, and providing students with supplies to market their club is appreciated.

Congratulations to Ms.Douglas for being recognized as this week's Faculty Friday. Ms.Douglas is crushing it in 6th grade core! Her leadership in Depth & Complexity and implementation of the prompts have ignited student thinking. We are so impressed by what your students are doing in your classroom! The Hewes staff is recognizing HIGHLANDERS “H” FOR A DAY AWARD! Highlander for a Day is a program at Hewes Middle School that celebrates students for incredible moments in the areas of Respect, Responsibility, and Results.

Please welcome Mr. Foley to the Hewes staff. He is one of our amazing Physical Education teachers who works with our 8th-grade students. Last year, he was working at Vista Del Mar K-8 School in San Clemente, and he attended middle school at McPherson Magnet School. Please welcome him to campus, we are so excited to have him support our student-athletes in after-school sports this year.

Sixth-grade families interested in the ELOP after-school program need to reach out to Nancy Roman at the YMCA. The best way to connect is to email her directly at nroman@ymcaoc.org. She will be able to provide information about eligibility and registration.
