Hoyne Happenings
Happy Monday Families!
I want to express my gratitude and sincere thanks to all of the families that volunteered, donated, helped plan, or supported the Fun Run in anyway. We had an amazing day full of joy and PRIDE. On top of that your amazing generosity helps to fund amazing projects for students like, playground upgrades, building furniture updates, books, assemblies, and more. I couldn't feel more grateful to be a part of this amazing community. Donations are being accepted through midnight tonight. Stay tuned for our final fundraising total. Check out some of the great pictures below.
Last week we also celebrated National Custodian's Day! We want to give a huge shout out to Mr. Greg and Mr. Jerry who help keep Pembroke safe and clean for students every day!
In addition, to the amazing funds raised for Pembroke last week, many students and staff participated in Pink for Purpose raising $1,300 for Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Way to show off your Pembroke PRIDE.
This week students continue to dive deep into learning and Tuesday we will have our first PRIDE Packs of the year. PRIDE Packs are cross-grade level groups that stay together for their entire time at Pembroke. We focus on discussing ways we can show Pembroke PRIDE, learn about how we can build community, read aloud common books, and more.
On Wednesday we will kick off the day we our Walk, Bike, and Roll to school event. See the details below. Wednesday night we look forward to seeing new families at our New Family Dinner from 6:30 - 7:30 in the cafeteria. Looking forward to another great week!

VW ELab
Michigan STEM Partnership is excited to have partnered with Birmingham Public and Southfield Public Schools to bring Volkswagen eLabs to Southeast Michigan! Volkswagen eLabs provide public school students access to state-of-the-art digital fabrication labs that transform learning and empower students to "make almost anything." BPS and SPS are the FIRST districts in Michigan to receive this unique opportunity. The VW eLabs will be equipped with state-of-the-art digital fabrication tools aligned with the specifications outlined by the Fab Foundation at MIT—the birthplace of Fab Labs (digital fabrication labs).
As part of this exciting partnership, each elementary school in BPS receives a large cache of digital tools/equipment and three years of extensive professional development, support, and consulting from devX PD for training and best practices. This initiative began in June of 2025 and we are hopeful all of the eLabs will be launched for the entire public by early October. The enormous positive impact on our k-5 students will be substantial for academic/skills sets and workforce development. Our STEAM motto: “If you can think it, you can make it.”
Author Visit
Exciting news! Author Josh Funk will visit Pembroke on October 20th! Josh Funk is the author of the popular Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast series, as well as many other books for kids! Both upper and lower elementary author visit presentations have been made possible by our generous Pembroke PTA. Thank you, PTA!
If you would like Josh Funk to sign a copy of one of his books when he visits on October 20th, students can bring in any title by him before Friday, October 17th. The book should have a sticky note on the front that lists the following:
- The name of the person who you’d like the book signed to
- The last name of the student’s classroom teacher
You can purchase his titles anywhere books are sold!
Technology/Trading Cards
Trading cards of any kind are not allowed at school. Please have your students leave them at home. Thank you for your participation in this!
Thursday is Bagel Day! $2 each
With the rising cost of bagels, we will be increasing the price per bagel to $2 per bagel. (Plain or Salt available) - each child is allowed one bagel. Bagels will be sold in the main lobby and at the Witherbee loop entrance. Thanks to all our 4th grade parent volunteers!

Halloween Information
We will be celebrating Halloween on Friday, October 31st. We will have a Halloween parade beginning at 10:00 am outside. All parents and guardians are welcome to watch the parade. Halloween parties will follow at 10:30, only the number of volunteers needed to run stations will be able to attend parties. These volunteers will be determined ahead of time. This is a half day of school and students will be dismissed at 11:50. Please see the reminders about appropriate Halloween costumes below. Your child may be asked to remove a part of their costume if they do not meet the requirements listed below.
When planning your child’s costume, we would like to request that the children select costumes for school that are non-violent and appropriate themed to wear at this all-school event. In particular, costumes that portray blood, death, violence, and those of similar nature are not permitted. Please, no masks or extreme makeup that will hide your identity. We are working to create a celebration with students as young as four. Thank you in advance for your mindfulness to this.
COSTUME RULES
1. All costumes need to be age-appropriate for elementary students.
2. Costumes should not be based on making fun of real people, real human traits or cultures.
3. If the costume is scary, is the fear factor appropriate to this age children?
4. Students MAY NOT under any circumstances bring toy guns, knives, swords or other weapons to school, even if they are parts of their costumes. Included in this ban are hockey sticks, baseball bats and other pieces of sports equipment because these items present potential safety hazards.
5. No Masks or extreme make up that hides your identity. And please avoid any costumes that have fake blood or gore – too scary for many of our students.
Lastly, our goal is to ensure that all families and students feel completely accepted, included, valued and connected to the Beverly school community. We teach all students to be proud of their identities, view diversity as an asset, and to demonstrate empathy and compassion for others. If your family does NOT celebrate Halloween, each year we provide alternative fun activities for students who do not celebrate. Please notify your child’s teacher if you would prefer that your son/daughter not participate in Halloween festivities.
