What's Up atWashington SquareSeptember 2025

Welcome Back! Welcome Back!

What’s the best way for our staff to kick off the school year? By meeting over 500 of our amazing students and their families at the Washington Square Orientation! This event was an incredible opportunity for our teachers to connect with students, answer questions, and share in the excitement of a new year of Career and Technical Education (CTE). We’re thrilled to start the year strong and can’t wait to see what our students accomplish!

At Washington Square, our goal is to provide every student with authentic learning experiences —classrooms full of hands-on lessons and real-world applications that prepare students for meaningful and lasting careers. Whether your class this year is solving crimes, constructing new materials, learning to save lives, or anything in between, we’re excited to see you grow in confidence, skills, and success. So put on that hard hat, wrap those ankles, or grab those black light pens—let’s get to learning!

Kelly Gargulak - Veterinary Sciences

Kelly Gargulak is originally from Minnesota, but has called Colorado home for over a decade. She lives with her wife, a civil engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation. Together, they share a lively household with three cats — Tater Tot Thunderpants, Tucker, and Manfred the Magnificent Mowser — as well as a snake and six fish.

Kelly brings more than 18 years of veterinary experience to FutureForward, including her time as a professor at the Community College of Denver, where she trained and mentored future veterinary technicians and assistants to prepare them for successful careers in animal care.

Outside of work, Kelly is passionate about hockey, and plays in the Women’s Hockey Association of Colorado. She also shows her leadership both on and off the ice as the captain of her team at South Suburban. When she’s not at the rink, she enjoys attending live music events and traveling to exciting and exotic destinations.

Thomas Koepp - Construction Teacher

Thomas was born in Colorado and proudly graduated as part of the first class from Prairie View High School. He now lives in Thornton with his wife, Ambrosha — who serves as a learning specialist at FutureForward at Bollman — and their three French bulldogs: Haru, Meadow, and Booker.

Before joining FutureForward, Thomas spent the past eight years working as a field electrician, having completed his apprenticeship through Independent Electrical Contractors Rocky Mountain (IECRM). His work primarily focused on multi-family homes and commercial buildings, giving him a strong foundation of real-world industry experience to share with students.

A passionate Denver sports fan, Thomas can often be found cheering on the Avalanche, Broncos, and Nuggets. He also loves to travel, with his favorite destinations including Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest. When he’s not attending concerts or live shows, you might catch him enjoying one of his favorite hobbies — building with LEGOs.

Adam Martin - Instructional Coach

Adam Martin is beginning his 20th year in education, with 13 of those years proudly spent in Adams 12 Five Star Schools. Throughout his career, he has worked at Thornton High School, Legacy High School, and most recently at Five Star Online Academy. In 2020, Adam also had the unique opportunity to participate in a teacher exchange program in Sydney, Australia, bringing a global perspective to his work in education.

Originally from northern Colorado, Adam is a proud graduate of Colorado State University and a passionate supporter of the CSU Rams. He now lives in Thornton with his wife, Jade, their daughter, Macy —a fifth-grader in the district — and their miniature schnauzer, Maggie.

In his free time, Adam enjoys taking on home improvement projects, including finishing his basement in 2023. His latest hands-on adventure? Restoring his classic 1965 Ford Mustang.

Tara Mastracchio - Law Enforcement Teacher

Born and raised in Rhode Island, Tara made her way to Colorado in 2003 — but her journey didn’t stop there. What later began as a two-month trip to South America turned into an incredible seven-year adventure across five continents, 25 countries, and nine languages — even earning her official residency in Ecuador. Tara returned to Colorado in 2018, and she and her dog, Kushia, now call Thornton home.

Tara has worked in law enforcement since 1996, serving both in the field and as a School Resource Officer (SRO). She also runs a trauma recovery and resilience business and collaborates with the Colorado Legislature.

Tara’s favorite thing to do is something she’s never done before, and her favorite place to go is somewhere she’s never been. That spirit of exploration and curiosity is exactly what excites her about teaching at FutureForward at Washington Square — a brand new journey she’s eager to begin.

Washington Square proudly continues its tradition of honoring the events of September 11, 2001, and recognizing the courage and sacrifice of all first responders.

This year, students in our Public Services programs — including EMT, Firefighting, and Law Enforcement — participated in a powerful ceremony commemorating the lives lost on 9/11. As part of the tribute, each student was issued a T-shirt and a badge bearing the name and photo of a fallen FDNY firefighter, creating a personal connection to the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We are proud of our students for showing such respect and dedication as they prepare to serve and protect their own communities.

Each year, Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs from across Adams County come together to host an exciting event for eighth-grade students—giving them the chance to explore CTE pathways, engage with industry partners, and connect with local colleges. CTE offers students a wide variety of career options, helping them make informed decisions about their future. Allowing students to be exposed to various options may provide direction and goal-setting skills as these students get ready to transition to high school.

This year’s expo will take place on Thursday, September 18. As many of our Washington Square staff will be participating in the event, all Washington Square classes are canceled on this date.

We look forward to helping students explore exciting possibilities for their futures!

Proposed Mill Levy Override Proposed Mill Levy Override

Mill Levy Override

Our district’s career and technical education (CTE) programs are some of the best in the state. But we aren’t able to hire enough teachers to keep up with student demand.

This November, voters will have the opportunity to pass a mill levy override (MLO) that would secure the funding necessary to increase access to CTE programming. Learn more.
