An Update from Jason

Hello All,

I hope you are all well. I hope you had a nice weekend, Eclipse Day, and are enjoying the warmer weather.

It was a busy weekend at the Affolter/Gingold house. I saw my dad and mom on Saturday. We had house guests from Massachusetts for the Eclipse: a 4-year-old and a 3-year-old, a 6 month baby, two middle schoolers, and four adults. Whew! I forgot what it's like to have the young ones around. It was total fun!

Friday night, we saw the 12th Night, and what an amazing show! Our students are so talented, and I am always in awe of their acting, music (written by Callum), and performance. Thank you, Masque, Tech crew, Kianna, and Ally T, for a beautiful experience. It made my Night.

This week, although shortened, is never one for dullness at MHS. The Winooski Valley Music Festival is at MHS on Tuesday. Progress reports will be mailed out this week. Teen Jazz is on Wednesday during Solon Block! It's going to be a great week!

I'm sending this pre-Eclipse, just in case the entire world's power or internet goes off. I hope the experience is incredible! Wear your glasses, and have a great Monday!

Thank you for all of your work, time, and mentorship.

Best,

Jason

Entrepreneur Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx, on failure:

"When my brother and I were growing up, my father would encourage us to fail. We'd sit around the dinner table and he'd ask, "What did you guys fail at this week?" If we had nothing to tell him, he'd be disappointed. The logic seems counterintuitive, but it worked beautifully.

He knew that many people become paralyzed by the fear of failure. They're constantly afraid of what others will think if they don't do a great job and, as a result, take no risks. My father wanted us to try everything and feel free to push the envelope. His attitude taught me to define failure as not trying something I want to do instead of not achieving the right outcome."

Reminders (To Do)

  • G&W Calendar. With the snow day on 4/4- April has 8 Green and 8 White Days. I am inclined to leave it as it. Please reach out if we should adjust.

  • On 4/15/24 MHS The Conversation is presenting "On behalf of the Conversation, I'm excited to announce consent educator Sarah Casper will be coming to our school April 15th to host an interactive consent presentation, "Consent Shakeup". This is designed to be an applicable and more nuanced version of the consent education most of you have already received. The course will be taught in two groups, block two and three (a green day). All seniors will be excused from the class they will be missing and sorted into two groups (stay tuned for your group) .

This opportunity has been made possible with generous community member's donations. The MHS class of '68 has been instrumental in our fundraising, donating in the name of their classmate Robin Farnham, whose life was tragically taken in an act of domestic violence soon after her high school graduation. Our club has been fundraising and putting a lot of thought and time into this event and we are really grateful to be able to provide this experience for the class of 2024! Thank you for your participation!"

  • Be Mindful. The MHS Clean Team has a lot going on until break. Every week we have an event at MHS, they are busy getting fields ready for spring sports, weekend events, Board Meetings, and normal cleaning. If there is anything you can do to help minimize the need or unless it's an emergency, let's hold off on the ask. Thank you for understanding.

  • Caitlin B is starting on 4/29 to help while Ellia is out. Caitlin is a Social Worker and completing their internship at UES.

MHS Professional Development Opportunity

MHS has an opportunity to partner with Montpelier Alive, The Community Engagement Lab and others to be a part of the "Bridges Project." Please see the information below. Paul Gamble (Nick and Ben's Caregiver) will be meeting with us on April 10th at 7:30 AM to describe the opportunity in full.

TA CONNECTIONS GAME CHALLENGE

MHS TA's are starting our own New York Times Style Connections Challenge. What your TA needs to do is this-

1. Use the link that provided as well as the shared doc where teachers/administrators can enter their Connection.

2. Have your TA make a COPY and create their own Connections, and include your TA NAME.

Share it with Jason so we can add it to our shared folder.

3. Jason will share the week's link each Tuesday morning with a brief Good Morning MHS Community blurb

4. Once we have enough Connections, we can begin.
5. Questions- please ask JK, Whitney, and Sue:)
