Read-A-Thon
Reading Dates: November 2 - 16, 2020
Deadline to turn in donations: November 20
If Everyone Participates we can raise over $20,000
Reading Goal: 500 minutes per student = 127,500 minutes
We’re trying something new this year! Since COVID prevents us from hosting our annual Walk-a-thon, we’re taking the fun indoors with a Read-A-Thon! PALS and the Annual Fund are teaming up to present this new fundraiser and will share the proceeds. One of the main goals is to raise enough to cover the costs for three of the four new water bottle filling stations that will be installed at Markell Hall this fall. The fourth filling station has been donated anonymously (thank you, kind donor!) All additional proceeds will go into the Annual Fund to help cover operational expenses that aren’t covered by tuition alone. With so many investments made into keeping our students and staff safe and healthy this year, the school needs these funds more than ever!
Please watch for your Read-A-Thon flyer to come home next week. Each flyer has been customized to your student, and contains important information to help you set up your student’s personal reading and fundraising site. Please invite grandparents, aunts and uncles, neighbors, and friends to support your child to reach their reading goal. Kids will earn age-appropriate prizes, and leading readers and fundraisers will earn extra accolades and awards!
Let’s work together to support our school community, and to further encourage a love of reading in our students!

Do you have a Veteran in Your Family?
This year, due to the fact that we cannot gather for the assembly, we would like to send them a little package created by our students to say thank you for your service!
If you have a family member or close friend who you would like to honor, please email Heather Black hblack@thefranklin.academy
Please include their name, address, and a little bit about their service. If you have a pictures of your veteran I would love to share those in the newsletter too!
If you would like to share about a veteran who is no longer with us, who you would like to honor, please forward that information to me as well.
For example:
Dave Williams – Vietnam War Vet, Army, Sgt. E5, with 11th Armored Cavalry. He served as Gunner on an Armored Personnel Carrier. Black Horse Unit - Grandpa to Gianna
Thank you!
The Reading Corner with Mrs. Samuel & Mrs. Snyder
We are excited to be able to share at-home access to our school library catalog. Wahoo! While you are not able to see student information, you can see what books we own and whether or not they are checked in. If you are an online schooling family, this is a great way to find books to check out (just email Mrs. Snyder for K-1 or Mrs. Samuel for 2-8 and we will get those books into your pile for pick up). It’s also just a great way for any family to see what we have and what we are in need of. You can follow the link here: https://search.follettsoftware.com/metasearch/ui/44373
Books that have an * before the call number indicates that it is at Robin Hall. Otherwise the books are at Markell, but it is easy for us to swap books if you spot one you want!
You can also access it on our new library Canvas page, which should be integrated into your student’s Canvas account.
On our canvas page you will also find our email addresses and class schedules, as well as a few other library related goodies.
Hopefully you received an email regarding our online Scholastic Book Fair and our upcoming Read-a-thon. Here is the information again, just in case!
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Samuel and Mrs. Snyder
It's time once again for our annual Scholastic Book Fair! This year, the fair will be online only, and we're counting on your support. All the Scholastic credit we earn from the fair this year (25% of sales total) will be invested in new book purchases for our libraries.
Scholastic has developed a fun Virtual 360 Book Fair with content from preschool through middle school. You get to scroll around a gym that's set up like our beloved fair - you can click on the carts to see the books lined up, click on the books to read the summary or preview video. There's posters hanging in between the carts, cardboard character cutouts, fair exclusives and lots of interactive content to bring the fair to life.
This is also a great week to stock up on books for our first-ever Read-A-Thon! PALS is teaming up with the Annual Fund to co-sponsor this exciting new fundraiser, so please check out the fair for some new book ideas and get inspired to read in November!
Please shop through our school's custom book fair site to earn credit for our school.
The Book Fair only runs from October 26 - November 8, so shop early and often!
All orders will be shipped directly to you, and shipping is free for orders over $25.
For those familiar with our annual sale, we usually have teachers fill a box with books on their wish list that families can purchase and donate to their teacher. We're working on creating a virtual wishlist for each teacher and we'll send that out later this week so you can shop for them too!
Please contact our Book Fair coordinator Rachel Gulleson with questions at rgulleson@gmail.com or contact pals@thefranklin.academy.
Thanks for your support. Watch your inbox for more updates on teacher wish lists and our progress later this week!
Best,

Video Production Club is Up and Running at Veritas Media Group!
Here is what Kasia had to say about their first session...
Hello Ms. Black! Kasia here.
In the last email, you were wondering what I thought of the Video Production Club.
I thought it was absolutely amazing. Although we were only doing touch-ups of what Video Production Club was going to be about, I can already tell this is going to be an amazing ten weeks! So far, we have filmed a starter project called "About Us" with my friends (Which I'm guessing we are going to be editing later). I can't wait to start getting into more of the club activities!
Thank you so much for including this event. It has and will be a pleasure to participate in.
Sincerely,
Kasia
