Sunnyvale ISD is pleased to announce Esther Castro as the new Sunnyvale Intermediate School principal.

Castro brings 21 years of experience in education, having served as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, and most recently as assistant principal in Rockwall ISD. Her background includes work in bilingual education, testing coordination, safety and PLC leadership.

“These roles have prepared me to lead with a clear instructional vision, manage complex campus operations, and build strong systems that support both students and staff,” Castro said, adding that her background has equipped her to lead with empathy, clarity and strategic focus.

Castro said she was drawn to Sunnyvale ISD because of its academic reputation and its tight-knit and supportive community.

“I was particularly inspired by the district’s focus on developing the whole child, empowering educators, and fostering leadership at all levels,” Castro said. “I’m excited to join a district that aligns with my core values—collaboration, excellence, and putting students first.”

In her new role, Castro said she will focus on building relationships with students, families and staff. Her initial goals are to ensure that there is clear communication and a positive campus culture where everyone feels safe, valued and heard. She will also focus on learning the campus instructional practices that support high levels of student success.

“I want families to feel like true partners in their child’s education; communication should be two way and responsive,” Castro said. “I also strive to foster an open-door culture where collaboration and shared leadership thrive.”

Castro plans to support teachers by listening to their feedback, protecting instructional time, providing meaningful, job-imbedded professional development, collaborating with them in PLCs and celebrating their successes.

“Ultimately, my goal is to support the Sunnyvale Intermediate culture where teachers can focus on what they do best - teaching and inspiring students,” Castro said.

Castro expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in SISD and a commitment to honoring the systems and relationships that have contributed to Sunnyvale Intermediate School’s success.

“I look forward to listening, learning, and building upon the strong foundation already in place, always keeping students at the center of every decision,” Castro said. “Together, we can continue to move Sunnyvale Intermediate forward with both excellence and care.”
