Ms. Mewes: Music

Hello Mountain View families! My name is Miss Mewes, and I love to tell my students that my name sounds just like music—which is perfect because I’m the Music teacher here! I recently moved to Alaska from South Dakota, and I’m so excited to share my passion for music with all the students at Mountain View Elementary. This semester, I am working with Kindergarten, First, and Second grades, and next semester, I’ll be working with Third, Fourth, and Fifth grades. So far, in music class, we’ve been busy learning our rules, routines, and each other’s names through fun songs. Be sure to ask your child about the songs we’ve been singing. I’m looking forward to sharing more about our musical adventures throughout the year. Please be sure to mark your calendars for our K-2 winter concert on December 9th at Kenai Central High School. I can’t wait to see you all there!

Mr. Brown: P.E.

Hello Mountain View families,

We’ve had a fast and exciting start to the school year! Over the past few weeks, we’ve been getting to know each other, learning our routines, and settling into a brand-new year.

In the primary grades, we’re focusing on moving safely in the gym, practicing routines, and, I've got to say, we’ve already had some pretty awesome dance parties!

In the intermediate grades, I’ve enjoyed some great discussions with students about the question, ā€œWhy is it important to move every day?ā€ Part of my role is helping students understand that physical education and movement are lifelong keys to a healthy lifestyle. We’re also working hard on learning each other’s names.

I’m excited to continue building your child’s skills, learning new ones together, and, most importantly, creating lifelong memories of how fun elementary PE can be!

Mrs. Torkelson: Library

Stomp, Chomp, and Read! Welcome Back to the Mountain View Elementary Library!

I’m roaring with excitement to see all the familiar faces from last year and to meet all our new dino-readers! This year is going to be dino-mite! šŸ¦•

We’ll start by learning our ā€œLibrary-asaurus Rulesā€ā€”how to take care of books, how to move through the library without a stampede, and what to do during drills. Then, we’ll practice hunting for books in the computer catalog, just like paleontologists searching for fossils!

Next, you’ll get to create your own personalized shelf-markers—your very own ā€œfossil findersā€ to mark the perfect spot on the shelves.

And after all that? It’s time for the best part: checking out books, discovering new adventures, and reading until our brains feel bigger than a Brachiosaurus!

I can’t wait to stomp into a grand time in the library with all of you this year. Let’s make it a RAWR-some reading adventure! šŸ“ššŸ¦–

Mrs. Butler: Art

Welcome to Art Class at Mountain View Elementary!
Hi, my name is Shana Butler and I'm excited to start a creative year with our amazing intermediate students! I’ve lived in Alaska since 2006 (originally from Virginia) and have been teaching art ever since. This quarter, we’re diving into the elements of art—the building blocks of becoming a great artist! It’s been wonderful meeting the students, and I can already tell we have an incredible amount of talent in our school. I’m looking forward to a fun, creative, and inspiring year ahead!

A Note From the Nurse: Head Lice Checks

Dear Families,

We want to give you a quick heads-up that while we have not had any confirmed cases of head lice at Mountain View, it is currently active in the wider community.

To help us keep our classrooms healthy and comfortable for all students, we ask that you take a few minutes to check your child’s head regularly at home.

A quick check behind the ears and along the neckline is often the most helpful. If you do find anything concerning, please reach out to us. We’re here to support you.

Thank you for helping us keep our school healthy!

Volunteers & Visitors

We hope that you can take the time to come visit our school. Visitors and volunteers are welcome. If you would like to visit our school please complete the following steps:

1. Complete a KPBSD Background check. This is required for all volunteers and visitors and must be renewed every school year.

2. Check with your child's teacher for volunteer and visiting opportunities.

3. Check in at the office and sign in when you arrive. All entrances are locked for the safety and security of our campus. We are working on updating to a buzz-in system for visitors, but for the time being, please call (907)283-8600 or ring our new doorbell to be admitted into the building.
