Notes from the Principal

Hello MS 50 Families,

As we honor the work and life of Martin Luther King Jr. this week, I think about one specific part of our powerful Creo Creo mural that adorns the main stairway of MS 50 - a reference to MLK’s idea of “creative maladjustment.” King argues that it is essential to be "creatively maladjusted" to discrimination, segregation, militarism, poverty, and bigotry.

King said “Through such maladjustment…we will be able to emerge from the bleak and desolate midnight of man’s inhumanity to man into the bright and glittering daybreak of freedom and justice.” Next time you walk past the Creo Creo mural, l encourage you to find the reference to creative maladjustment and reflect on ways that we can use creativity to challenge inequality and injustice in our world.

3D Printing and Design

The 3D Printing and Design ELT class celebrates student passion for creating, designing, engineering, or architecture. Students are using the latest 3D printing and design software to create their designs and have weekly competitions! Our students work in small groups and learn how to take care of their own 3D printers. Our student entrepreneurs have recently started planning for ways to express their entrepreneurial passion by planning to design custom 3-D models for future fundraising initiatives.

Drama Club

In Drama Club, students are building community by exploring scenes, plays, musical theater, design, writing and more. We are hard at work preparing for our Spring Musical, a production called “The Caribbean Odyssey” written for and with collaboration from our MS 50 drama students! We are doing in-depth work on blocking, understanding our characters, and the importance of theatrical storytelling and can’t wait to share the result with you this May.

Videography

Videography students are learning how to use and operate camera equipment, high tech audio equipment, running multi-cam live streams and more! This fall, we were hard at work setting up and learning how to use our brand new videography studio, complete with a green screen and multi-cam news set up! Students are preparing to film weekly announcements, and have recorded school events like our Honor Roll Ceremonies and Winter Arts Showcase.

Fundraising Meeting WEDNESDAY

Washer and Dryer

We are excited to have purchased a washer and dryer to be used by anyone in the MS 50 Community! We have approval to install these machines but there are significant installation costs involved to retrofit the parent room to accommodate these machines. If you are interested in donating or helping to plan fundraisers please email our PTA President Ms. Southerland or attend the fundraising meeting on Wednesday.

Student Snacks

A successful and popular fundraiser is our daily snack sales during student lunch periods! If you are able to donate snacks to be sold during this time, please bring them to school and drop them off in the main office for Ms. Edda.

MS 50 is growing! We are adding more students every week and we need the space to give all our students the space to learn, grow, and thrive. If you are interested in participating in advocacy and organizing to gain access to additional classroom space, please complete the Google Form below.
