  • Jennifer Harper harperj@brightonk12.com
    • With 26 years of experience as a licensed master-level social worker, I bring a wealth of knowledge in addressing anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, and social challenges. I am here to offer individual counseling, group sessions, crisis intervention, and referrals. I will also collaborate closely with teachers, parents, and school administrators to ensure that every student has the resources and support they need to thrive.

Beyond my professional life, I enjoy running, camping with my family, and spending time outdoors. As a proud BHS graduate with two children currently in the district, I feel deeply connected to our school and community.

  • Alexis Jaster
    • Ms. Jaster has been working in the field of social work for 3 years now, both spent in the high school setting. She has a passion for mental health education, supporting students and families, and loves getting to see students grow as they progress through their time in high school. • Erika Vorias
    • This is my 9th school year as a school social worker, previously I have worked in Genesee County. I have two little girls at home and we enjoy activities outside, anything that involves animals and time with our family. Mental Health Specialist....Rachel Anderson

This is my 3rd year in a social work role and my first year at BHS as the Mental Health Specialist! I am here to support students with any social emotional needs, whether that be long term therapy or just having a bad day. I have an amazing family, my husband, three kids, and a large fluffy dog. I enjoy everything outdoors, watching sports, reading, and vegging on the couch with a cup of coffee and a good show/movie.

Class of 2026 Update

Class of 2026, I have been getting a lot of questions about college applications, sending transcripts, and the Common Application in particular, since it is application season. So if your path after high school doesn't involve college, you can skip this particular message!

I highly recommend getting all of your applications in by November 1st, which is when most colleges consider them eligible for Early Action. This does give you a better chance of being accepted, and it allows you to know where you are going earlier in the year. There are some schools that have earlier or later deadlines, so make sure to check the ones you are applying to.

In each of my last two senior classes, I had at least one student send a transcript to a school and think that was all they needed to apply. Applying is a two-step process-you must fill out an application AND send a transcript.

If you are using the Common Application, make sure you invite and assign me as your counselor, and do the same for anyone writing you a recommendation letter. I will fill out the School Report and will write a recommendation letter if necessary. I MUST upload your transcript as part of the School Report, so you do not need to request transcripts be sent to any school you apply to using the Common App.

Any school you apply to using another method besides Common App requires you to put in a request on Parchment.com for me to send them a transcript. Parchment.com is easy, free, and gives schools instant access to your transcript once I send it. To set up your Parchment.com account and send requests for transcripts, follow the directions below (in the attached document). If you want to check with me after you make your 1st request, we can easily look and make sure you did it correctly.

If there is a special circumstance and you need your transcript sent directly to a person at a school, please let me know and provide their e-mail address. This happens most frequently with students planning to play a sport in college, where the coach might ask for a transcript to be sent directly to them.

Last thing-I am happy to answer general questions about college applications, deadlines, etc. However, I want to make sure that you know that the best and most accurate source of knowledge about a school's admissions policies and application is the admissions office of that school. Don't be afraid to reach out to them-answering questions is literally part of their job, and they are happy to do so.

Thanks,

Mr. Miner

FAFSA Opens October 1st

Start filling out the FAFSA® form at fafsa.gov beginning on October 1st.

WHY Complete the FAFSA?

You need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form to be eligible for federal student aid such as federal grants, work-study funds, and loans. Completing and submitting the FAFSA form is completely FREE. Completing this form provides you access to the largest source of aid to help you pay for college or career school.

Additionally, many colleges use your FAFSA information to determine your eligibility for state and school aid. Some private aid providers may use your FAFSA information to determine whether you qualify for their aid as well.

Save the Date... we will have a FAFSA Parent/Student help session on Dec 9th at BHS...more info to come!

Class of 2027 News

Hey Class of 2027,

OK, your Junior year at BHS has begun! The next big thing on everyone's plate, besides getting off to a strong start in your classes, is the PSAT/NMSQT test in early October. This test will be during school hours, and will not cost you anything. The PSAT is very similar to the SAT test, which we will all take in the spring. In addition, if you do really well on the PSAT you could qualify to be a National Merit Scholar and earn money towards college. If you want to read more information about this upcoming assessment, you can read the PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide. More detailed information will be shared in the near future!

On another note, I will be stopping into your Social Studies classes at the beginning of October to chat about some career and college readiness information!

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN EARLY COLLEGE.... Applications are due by September 30th. See further information in the "Events in the Area" section for an informational meeting!

I hope your junior year is off to an amazing start.

Thanks,

Mrs. Caverly

September is Suicide Prevention Month: Supporting Our Students at BHS

At Brighton High School, the well-being of our students is very important to us. This September, in recognition of Suicide Prevention Month, we are taking proactive steps to educate, empower, and support our students.

Throughout the month, students will learn to:

  • Recognize the warning signs of suicide and emotional distress

  • Ask for help when they or someone they know is struggling

  • Access mental health resources - both at school and in the community

My goal by the end of the month is simple: that every student at BHS will know that we care and are capable of having these hard conversations. We hope this initiative reinforces the message that they can always reach out—whether to a teacher, counselor, administrator, or peer.

Thank you for partnering with us in supporting your child.

Please take a moment to read through the warning signs (see document below) and how to support your child should they need support with their mental health.
