A Message from the City of Brighton Department of Public Services
Please see the message below from the City of Brighton's Department of Public Services as it may impact your student if they walk to school, and may also increase foot traffic for drivers to be aware of:
We wanted to let you know that our sidewalk contractor will be replacing the sidewalks at all the intersections on Washington Street between S. 1st St. and S. 4th St.
We were hoping to have it all completed by the start of school next week, but unfortunately that won’t be able to happen. We have asked them to do one side of Washington at a time so that there is always a way for the students who walk to school to be able to travel down Washington safely.
School Lunch Information
As mentioned in Dr. Outlaw's most recent Superintendent Newsletter, there is still uncertainty over the state budget. However, we have been receiving a number of questions about the status of free meals for the upcoming school year. At this time, what we know is that breakfast and lunch will minimally be provided to all BAS students through September 30th, which is when State funding for the program expires.
More information on this specific program from Dr. Outlaw's newsletter can be found below:
Government-Provided Meals Program
In 2023-24, the State of Michigan began the Michigan School Meals Program, which provided free meals to Michigan students. As revenue decreases in the wake of the end of COVID relief funding, the legislature is debating whether to continue this program into the future. This is directly in both the Governor's and Senate versions of the budget, but the House rolled these dollars into one pot of money that could allocated at the discretion of each district.
We will continue to monitor negotiations, but breakfast and lunch will minimally be provided to all BAS students through September 30th which is when State funding for the program expires.
We will keep you up-to-date as negotiations unfold and we thank you all for your patience.
1st Day of School
*If your student is in grades 10 -12 and is scheduled to attend a consortium class in another district (i.e. construction, private pilot, etc.), they should attend their consortium class on the first day of school at its regularly scheduled time. They will be excused from any BHS classes on the first day that conflict with their consortium class, and we would plan to see them in their regularly scheduled classes starting on Wednesday, September 3rd.
1st Day of School Transportation Schedule
Normal pick up and drop off information (times and location) can be found in ParentConnect under the "Transportation" tab on the left side of the screen.
As shared previously, our Freshman will be starting the day at the normal time (in class by 7:30 am) in the building and in their classes without any 10th, 11th, or 12th graders present.
Our 10th, 11th, and 12th graders will attend on the first day, just not until later (in class by 12:00). We WILL have bus transportation available for all students on the first day of school, regardless of when they start their day. Additional information is provided below:
9th grade: Pickup will be at your regularly scheduled time that has been provided to you by the Transportation Department. This will get students to BHS by 7:00 or shortly after that and give them plenty of time to get to their 1st hour class by 7:30.
10th, 11th, and 12th grades: Transportation has shared with us that pick up will be 4.5 hours later than the time they will find on their normal transportation bus information (i.e. if normal pickup provided by transportation is 6:30 am, pickup on the FIRST DAY ONLY would be at 11:00 am). This will get students to BHS by 11:30 or shortly after that and give them plenty of time to get to their 1st hour class by 12:00.
After the 1st day, the bussing schedule will return to the normal pick up and drop of schedule as provided by the Transportation Department. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Student Pick Up and Drop Off Information for Parents
We would like to take a moment to remind everyone of the proper drop-off/ pick-up procedures for your students at the High School. First thing, we want to make sure your students are safe. This will always be our #1 priority! This includes our security staff who our out directing traffic, rain or shine, to ensure your students’ safety, while also attempting to keep traffic flowing through the loop.
There has been an increase in student drivers to start the year each of the last few years and the lots will fill up quickly. This means A LOT of NEW drivers who may not be familiar with the traffic volume before/after school.
Parents———PLEASE use the drop-off loop off Seventh Street. Do not use the side streets to drop-off your student to walk across Seventh Street towards the school.
#1—— It is posted NO stopping, standing or parking during drop-off and pick-up times.
#2—— It is safer to get closer to the building. As we get closer to the start of the year it will be staying darker later, which means it will be harder to see students as they cross the street.
PLEASE NOTE—— For the traffic on Seventh Street and those trying to turn left from Washington St. onto Seventh Street, PLEASE try to alternate. Unless, of course, there are cars leaving the school preventing vehicles waiting to turn left from Washington onto Seventh Street. Although there is no stop sign on Seventh Street at Washington, the traffic on Seventh usually stops to let someone in. This keeps things from backing up too much on any one street at any point in time.
Please do NOT use the rear of the school or the BCPA Lot to drop-off —— This area will be blocked off with cones preventing cars from entering the drop-off line. Also, there is NOT a turnaround option in this lot. There are so many students and staff coming into and leaving the lot it creates an added hazard to all. The goal is to maintain ONE direction traffic into these lots as much as possible in an attempt to avoid any traffic collisions.
Every year, we hear about the traffic congestion in the morning and afternoon. PLEASE understand with 2000 plus students and staff packed into this building there is a lot of traffic around the school. We do the best we can to keep things moving as quickly as possible while still keeping all of our students and staff as safe as possible. If you are looking to avoid the congestion, here are a few things to look at:
#1—— Have your students ride the bus or car pool
#2—— Pull all the way up to the end of the sidewalk in front of BHS. This will maximize the amount of cars that can drop-off at one time (especially since all three doors on the front side of BHS are open for student entry each morning).
#3—— Plan to get to the high school before 7:10 am. If you get your student up and are arriving at BHS before 7:10 am, you can usually just drop-off and continue on your way without getting caught in a long line up.
For Pick-Up——— Make sure when you are lining up waiting to ONLY utilize the lane CLOSEST to BHS. The LEFT lane MUST be left OPEN for drive -thru traffic! Also, as the pick-up gets longer out to the road and down Seventh Street, you can park in the front parking lot and wait for your student there as well.
Missed In Person Back to School Registration?
If your student was unable to attend either Registration Day, it is not the end of the world. The information below may be helpful for them as they plan to account for what they missed at Registration:
- School pictures can be taken on Picture Retake Day, which will be on October 14th this year.
- Students can get their picture taken and a Student ID card made before or after school in the Main Office.
- Once they have their ID card, they can have their sports pass added to their ID card if they purchased one.
- Parking passes can be purchased in the Main Office.
- Student schedules are visible online in their StudentConnect account.
- Students who were scheduled to pick up their Academic Letter as a first-time recipient can pick them up from the Main Office. If your student has earned their Academic Letter previously, they will receive their bar and certificate at the Academic Letter Lunch in November! All parents of students receiving their Academic Letter and students receiving their Academic Letter will be invited to the Academic Letter Lunch on during their regularly scheduled lunch time on November 7th.
- All other items can be taken care of online.
Ordering School Pictures
In case you did not receive the school picture ordering form previously, a copy of the form can be found here. Pictures can be ordered online and can be sent to you directly once they are ready (within 7 days of Picture Day).
Your student also should have come home from Registration with a slip from the picture company that looks like this. This slip will allow you to preview your student's picture prior to ordering.
As a reminder, if your student is going to take advantage of our Picture Retake Day, it will take place on October 14th. There will be a new order form issued for that day that will be provided as it gets closer.

Senior Questionnaire - Class of 2026
If you attended the Future Senior Parent Meeting, you learned more about the Senior Questionnaire. Many scholarships, college applications, etc., require letters of recommendation to be submitted in order to be considered. This document is extremely helpful for anyone you may be asking for a letter of recommendation (teachers, grade level principal, counselor, coaches, employers, etc.) and will go a long way in helping ensure the letter of recommendation you receive is a quality on. A few reminders are listed below:
- When you submit your Senior Questionnaire, it will generate an email with your responses included. We would recommend printing this and providing a copy to anyone you are asking to write a letter for you.
- If you are going to be asking for letters of recommendation, ask early, well before the deadline. Many of the people you will be asking will have many letters to write, so advance notice in requesting, and patience afterward is much appreciated.
- You are unable to submit applications via College Board prior to August 1st. Take your time in completing your Senior Questionnaire and be sure to provide as much information within each category/question as you can to aid your recommenders.
Class of 2026 Remind Codes - Students Only
In addition to our various social media accounts, one of the ways in which we share important information with the Senior class is through the use of the Remind App. We will share the same information with parents via weekly emails, however, students seem to do a better job receiving the information through Remind. Please help us by encouraging your student(s) to join the correct Remind group using the join codes below (alphabetical by last name):
Last Name A - E: @bhssr26a-e
Last Name F - L: @bhssr26f-l
Last Name M - P: @bhssr26m-p

Information from Michigan State Admissions
Mr. Grabowski and Mr. Miner shared information earlier this week directly from Michigan State University. In case you missed this information, it is provided below:
Please see below for some great information on processes & what to expect applying to Michigan State University. This information applies to both the Class of 2026 & Class of 2027. Please reach out with any individual questions or concerns!
Michigan State University Admissions Information — Class of 2026 & 2027 Applicants
Test Scores
MSU is test optional through at least 2027.
If a student has an average GPA and an SAT score below 1100, they should choose NOT to have test scores considered in their application.
Going test optional will not hurt a student’s chances for:
Admission
Scholarships
Honors College consideration
If a student says they want scores considered and submits a low score, MSU must factor it in — even if the scores were sent automatically from College Board.
If a students elects NOT to have scores considered, MSU cannot consider them even if they've already been sent in or are on the transcript.
For high-achieving students (top 5% of their class with a rigorous course load): only submit an SAT score if it is 1400 or higher to stay competitive for Honors College consideration.
Early Action vs. Regular Admission
Apply Early Action (non-binding) by November 1 for:
A guaranteed decision by January 15
Full consideration for scholarships
Regular Admission applications are guaranteed a decision by March 31 — but review doesn’t begin until after all Early Action files are processed. This delays decisions and may reduce scholarship opportunities.
Application Fee
The application fee is $75 for this year.
Free Application Week
From October 1–10, 2026, students can apply for free by using the waiver code: Spartan1855.
MSU will email this code to students already in their system.
No refunds are available for students who apply before October 1 and pay the fee.
No advantage to applying before the free week — but don’t wait until the last minute. Applying closer to October 1 (instead of October 10) ensures faster processing ahead of the November 1 deadline.
Traditional fee waiver questions will still appear for those who qualify.
