Scripps Oceanography Student Research Symposium [Sept 22]

Hello science educators and administrators!

I hope your summer is going well. I am writing to assess your interest in having your students attend the Scripps Oceanography Student Research Symposium (https://sss.sioword.ucsd.edu/). This symposium, which is run entirely by Scripps students, is held every year and is intended to provide a platform for Scripps graduate students to present on the wide variety of research Scripps has to offer. The conference is a chance for these young scientists to discuss their research with their student colleagues (undergraduates, graduate students) and is also intended to provide an opportunity for Scripps students to engage in outreach to local high school science students. To this end, the presentations are designed to be understandable not just to others in specific fields, but to the broader community.

Over the last couple of years, Scripps students have welcomed and informally mentored HS students as attendees at the conference, leading them through poster sessions and answering questions about their research and academic career pathways.

I am hoping you might be interested in working with the organizers of the conference to set up interactions with either your class(es) and/or individual students who may have a specific interest in earth, ocean and atmospheric science. As the conference is virtual, the options of participation are quite flexible.

The conference is scheduled for Wednesday September 22nd, 2021. Details can be found here and will be updated as planning continues: https://sss.sioword.ucsd.edu/

Ethan Staats (estaats@ucsd.edu) is on then organizing committee and is the liaison between the conference organizers and YOU! Please respond with interest in pursuing this opportunity and we will follow-up to discuss details.

Also, feel free to forward as you see fit.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

UC SCOUT University of California UC SCOUT University of California

Quick Introduction to UC Scout
open_in_new zoom_out_map

UC Scout is a University of California online program designed to expand access to A-G and AP approved curriculum and courses. A summary of our plans are below:

  • Basic (free to CA public schools): Provides students access to video lecture content only for supplemental learning (good resource to study for the AP exam). Teachers receive access to the full course content including video lectures, quizzes and tests, assignments, answer keys, grading rubrics, and other resources so they can facilitate a course on behalf of their students. With Basic, the student and teacher are not connected through the online classroom, Canvas. The teacher must print and distribute the curriculum or provide it via another platform such as email. Once completed, the teacher works directly with their school site to issue credit. UC Scout does not provide the credit or transcript in this plan.

Students and teachers can fill out the promotion code form to access Basic for free. The code can be applied at checkout.

  • Plus (free to CA public schools): Teachers receive access to the full course content including video lectures, quizzes and tests, assignments, answer keys, grading rubrics, and other resources so they can facilitate a course on behalf of their students. With Plus, the student and teacher are connected via the online classroom, Canvas. The student can view, complete, and submit all assignments through Canvas. Any multiple choice assignments are automatically graded, however the teacher must grade any open ended assignments and input the grade into the grade book. Plus can be used to supplement in person, or facilitated with a 100% online or hybrid model. Once completed, the teacher works directly with their school site to issue credit. UC Scout does not provide the credit or transcript in this plan.

Plus courses are set up on request by emailing ucscout@ucsc.edu.

  • On Demand ($399 per student/course/semester): Students take online asynchronous (self paced) independent study style courses overseen by a CA credentialed UC Scout teacher. With On Demand, students can work at their own pace, as long as the course is completed by the end date at the very latest. The UC Scout teacher does not provide live instruction, instead students learn directly from the video lecture content. The UC Scout teacher will grade all assignments, provide support, and offer weekly virtual office hours. Once completed, students can request a copy of their official transcript.

Dear SUHSD Educator,

The Mechanistic Machine Learning and Digital Twins for Computational Science, Engineering & Technology (MMLDT-CSET 2021) Conference to be held in San Diego during September 26-29, 2021 is progressing well (https://mmldt.eng.ucsd.edu/).

The conference features 43 Mini-symposia under 8 Technical Tracks, and 8 Plenary Lectures,.

More specifically,

1. A short course will be offered for undergraduate students & High School teachers:

- Mechanistic Data Science (MDS) for STEM Education and Applications (https://mmldt.eng.ucsd.edu/short-course)

2. Track 8: Mechanistic Data Science (MDS) for High School and Undergraduates STEM Education and Applications will be held everyday during the three-day conference, consisting of three two-hour lectures with exercises and supplemented with six two-hour panel discussion sessions focusing on how similar MDS examples can be used in high school and undergraduate education (https://mmldt.eng.ucsd.edu/mini-symposia).

Discovery Education: Immersive Reader

In partnership with Microsoft, Discovery Education is working to integrate Immersive Reader across our platform. Currently, teachers and students can find the Immersive Reader icon in our content creation tool, Studio. Because STEM Connect and some Science Techbook resources are built in Studio slideshows, this Immersive Reader feature can also be found there.

Access to San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering STEAM WEEK

Dear Educator,

We set out an ambitious agenda for the first-ever virtual STEAM Week, and we are thrilled with the turnout! Over the course of the week we drew thousands of attendees from across the US and 10 countries, and generated buzz on social media. In addition, our special Teacher Appreciation Week events gathered nearly 200 San Diego educators to celebrate the important work they do every day. A HUGE thank you to all of our sponsors and community partners who made this possible, and to the event hosts and speakers who inspired us all.

Between two full days streaming on a live stage, special COVID Conversation for Kids and Women in STEAM events, Science-ING Chats, 100+ pre-recorded general sessions and the virtual exhibitor booths, we have hours of amazing STEAM content now available on demand.

All event sessions are now available on the lovestemsd.org/2021 website and will be through the end of 2021. We hope that you use the archive as an ongoing resource for inspiring STEAM content. We would also love your feedback as we plan ahead for future events.

Looking ahead to the rest of 2021 and beyond, we're excited to continue STEAM programming throughout the year. You'll find information on a couple of our ongoing programs below. And stay tuned because we have an exciting organizational announcement coming soon! 🙌

With gratitude 💙

The STEAM Week Team

[The festival took place virtually between April 24-May 2]

How about some STEM Virtual Field trips? How about some STEM Virtual Field trips?

zoom_out_map

Virtual field trips can help students get a front-row look at STEM outside of the classroom. Where can those engineering concepts you learn during school take you in adulthood? Is it possible to be creative in a STEM career?

HERE are some virtual field trips highlighting STEM careers and experiences.
