The Adventures of a South Pole Pig
Week 5 Discussion Questions
Chapter 32 (pp. 222-231)
Sophia says to Flora, “I am not very good at saying sorry, but I apologize.” (p. 226)
Why is it so hard for some people to apologize? And, why do some people apologize
for things that are not their fault? Is it OK to just say you are sorry, even if you are not?
Is just saying sorry enough?
Chapter 33 (pp. 232-236)
This chapter has one of the best quotes in the book: “Cats are good at keeping clean.
Dogs are good at running forever without getting tired. And I think that pigs are good
at being optimistic and not giving up even when things are really bad. So today we’re
going to do things the pig way, okay?” (p. 234) Think about the people in your life.
What different strengths does each person contribute? What is your strength? How do
your strengths make a contribution to the world?
Chapter 34 (page 237-244)
Flora’s plan worked! Aleric and Oscar found Flora and Sophia in the snow. Did you
think the plan would work?
In the last chapter, Flora said that dogs are good at running forever without getting
tired, and Oscar said pulling a sled is like medicine. But Oscar is suffering. How do
you think he feels about not being able to do the thing he was born to do?
Chapter 35 (page 245-260)
Aleric says to Flora, “I guess the captain was right – it’s hard to know where brains and
talent are going to come from.” (p. 251) Do you think it was just brains and talent that
led Flora to be a sled pig? Or, did it take more than that?
Flora explains to Oscar that Sophia has become more than a cat, Flora has become more
than a pig, and Oscar has become more than a dog. How did this change happen? What
does this change tell you about being on a team?
Ending Questions
This is a book where all the characters undergo transformations. Discuss each of the
characters and how they changed over the course of the book. Remember to include
some of the more minor characters like Amos in your discussion.
Do you think you would like to explore Antarctica?
This book gives very specific personalities to pigs, cats and dogs. Which one is most
like you? Which characteristics of the other two animals would you like to have?
Flora set out to find adventure. Do you have that same adventurous spirit? What
adventures do you want to find in your life?
