Come out and support the Maynard Girls' Soccer team as they scrimmage against North Middlesex at 6:00 PM on September 1st. The real opponent, however, is Glioblastoma,. a form of brain cancer that is affecting one of our Maynard Girls' Soccer families. Let's "Play For A Purpose," and fight Glioblastoma by spreading the word and showing up for our community! Here is a message from Erin, one of our Varsity captains:

“Play for a Purpose” 09/01/2026

I’ve played soccer for 12 out of the 17 years I have been alive; the majority of it was playing with my dad, either as my coach or as my biggest fan. He showed up to every game from Tiger Cubs all the way to my senior season, rain or shine. In my elementary days of soccer, I hated it. Which is crazy to think that I ever hated this sport, because now I love it and what its has brought to my life. Still my mom and dad dragged me to practices and signed me up for each fall and spring. Over time it changed, it soon became all I ever lived, breathed or watched, and my dad is there every second of it. He started my love for the game. He’s supported me on every team I have been part of, Tiger Cubs, MYS, Massachusetts Town Select, Massachusetts’s Districts Program, MGVS, Strikers United & Best FC. Now it’s my turn to support him.

In November 2025 my family’s world was flipped upside down; my dad was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, a brain cancer. When he went through his treatment, he told me “it would break my heart if you were to ever stop playing soccer, promise me you wouldn’t stop.” I know my playing days are limited, but he knows my heart will always be on the field, whether coaching or reffing.

Right now, he’s good. He coached my sister's 1/2 team this past spring & could not have been more excited and weepy to be back on the soccer field. If he’s not watching me and Kylie play in Summer League, he’s somewhere walking in and around the Maze.

The name “Play for a Purpose” is a play on our season’s slogan “Play with a purpose”. Though I have played soccer all my life for a purpose; it was to spend time with my dad. From the early morning wake ups for club, long car ride conversations, to walking away from the bench scanning the fence to find him after a Varsity game.

Over my 12 years of playing soccer I have had many things told to me, some I remember, some I can care less about. But two things have stuck with me and both from the same coach, Coach Tim. He’s always said “heels on the touchline” but they do not apply here. The other thing he always said was “pass with a purpose” meaning know where you want the ball to go and have a meaning and thought behind where your putting it. So I am passing the ball with purpose, I am creating a night meant to raise money to help my dad and many others.

To my teammates/friends from Maynard, AB, Districts/ Club & coaches from MYS & Mass Youth Soccer: Please share this with friends, family & teammates and please show up for the love of the game and to help me allow my dad to watch me & my sisters play soccer.

-Erin

Have you read a good book or two this summer? There's still time!

Each of our English teachers expects you to read this summer. It needs to be a book you haven't read before, and it needs to be appropriate for a student your age. Fiction, non-fiction, e-reader, audiobook -- it doesn't matter. Just read a book (or two, if you are taking Honors English).

For specific instructions on how to find a good book, document your summer reading, and complete the extra assignments for honors classes, please click on the teacher for your grade:

If your student will be new to MHS this fall, please plan to attend the Freshman Barbecue. This is a fun evening designed for families. We invite all adults who support new students to attend!

In addition to a great burger buffet, parents and guardians will have a chance to meet some of the freshman teachers and support staff, to tour the building, and to visit information booths.

Meanwhile, students will meet upperclass mentors, will visit the classrooms on their schedule so they will know where to go on the first day, and will enjoy the burger buffet with old and new friends.
