Capital Project Overview Capital Project Overview

The District's 2024 Capital Improvement Project is well underway. Significant progress has been made since the District's last capital project update.

The goal of this Smore and subsequent newsletters is to keep the NTCSD community and staff aware of the exciting capital project work the district has going on as well as insights into future plans as they develop.

Phase 1A Phase 1A

Construction on Phase 1A began as soon as students went on summer recess and has been completed. This work included extensive roof repairs over the high school's cafeteria wing (partial before and after pictures included), roof repair at Drake Elementary (partial before and after pictures included), as well as roof and gutter replacement at the transportation center. Significant brick repointing work was also completed at Spruce Elementary (sample before and after pictures included) as well as at North Tonawanda Intermediate. The majority of work was completed prior to return of students and staff in September.

Phase 1B Phase 1B

While construction was underway, design plans were submitted to the state's facility planning department which have been approved for Phase 1B. Bids for this phase of the capital project are expected to be received in November and approved by the Board of Education. This will allow for construction to begin in the late spring of 2026.

The scope of work encompassed in Phase 1B will center around both interior and exterior spaces at the buildings throughout the district.

- Cafetorium and auditorium renovations at the K-6 elementary schools.

- Energy-efficient window replacement at Spruce and Drake.

- Cabinet and sink replacements at the K-3 buildings.

- Interior space renovations at the transportation center.

- A secure front door vestibule at the high school.

- Energy-efficient electrical, HVAC, and mechanical upgrades throughout the K-6 buildings.

Phase 2 Phase 2

Phase 2 will undoubtedly be the most complex portion of the capital project as it primarily focuses on classroom redesign at the high school and energy-efficient window replacement at NTMS. The architects and construction managers have held multiple meetings with the district and instructional leaders. Phase 2 construction is anticipated to begin during the spring of 2027. Specifically, this part of the project will likely include:

- Energy-efficient window replacement at the middle school.

- Energy-efficient mechanical upgrades at the middle school and high school.

- Health office renovations at the high school.

- FACS, art, science, music, and technology room renovations at the high school.

Yearly Capital Outlay Project Yearly Capital Outlay Project

Each year, the district is permitted by the New York State Education Department, pending a successful school budget vote, to complete a mini $100,000 improvement project known as a Capital Outlay. This type of project is the equivalent of the express lane EZ pass version of capital projects compared to the multi-million dollar multi-year projects districts complete. The goal of capital outlays are for districts to continuously improve facilities as needed.

The 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 capital outlay project focused on select door replacement at NTMS and NTHS.

The 2025-2026 capital outlay project is focusing on K-3 playground fencing installation. Bids for this work were solicited in June and successful bids were approved by the Board of Education at the July reorganization meeting. Installation of the playground fences will hopefully be completed by the late fall of 2026.

While the Spruce Elementary playground project has been completed, the aerial pictures of Drake and Ohio Elementary are not drawn to scale, but rather represent the concept of the proposed fencing location in relation to each playground and respective roadway.
