"YOU GAIN STRENGTH, COURAGE, AND CONFIDENCE BY EVERY EXPERIENCE IN WHICH YOU REALLY STOP TO LOOK FEAR IN THE FACE. YOU MUST DO THE THING WHICH YOU THINK YOU CANNOT DO.”
- Eleanor Roosevelt
Good Afternoon, CUSD,
It’s been a hot week in Coronado, and our campus cool zones have provided relief to staff and students - sending kids to school with water bottles filled with ice water helps too!
We continue to monitor air quality (specifically environmental gasses like hydrogen sulfide which has risen significantly due to the heat) in collaboration with County and South Bay school officials. While poor air quality has affected the daily routine in some of our neighboring districts, so far we have not had to make any adjustments. You can track hydrogen sulfide levels on the APCS website and sign up for alerts and advisories. Read here for more information on exposure and symptoms.
We are so proud that all four of our schools were awarded Purple Star designation for supporting military connected students. In case you missed the news stories you can read more about it here.
Next month we will be hosting our annual K-12 Biliteracy Awards and Cultural Fair on April 21. We are looking for volunteers to host a booth at this fun event celebrating world languages and cultures. This is a wonderful opportunity for families or school clubs to celebrate their cultural heritage with games, flags, artifacts, or food tastings from their culture. It’s free to have a booth and free to attend - see flyer below.
Enjoy a beautiful weekend,
Respectfully,
Karl J. Mueller

Ed Tech Parent Series
SDCOE is excited to announce the upcoming Educational Technology Parent Series, a free virtual learning opportunity open to all parents and educators across our region. This series is designed to support families and school communities in navigating educational technology and resources that empower student success.
As our educators, parents, and community come together to connect, challenge, and champion our students, we are humbled by the outpouring of compliments. What a positive testament to our CUSD family!
- Mr. Tam Hoang has provided much needed encouragement and support through my son’s high school experience and I feel he goes above and beyond his duties as a teacher at CHS. I would like to recognize him for his positive influence in the lives of his students. My son was lucky enough to have Mr. Hoang as his teacher in both Ethnic Literature and AP English Literature and Composition over the last two years. Literature and writing are not my child’s natural given strength so him choosing to take these classes was surprising. Not only did he make great strides in reading and writing, but he learned to critically analyze literature in a way he had not done before. He has developed a new appreciation for reading (even books that are not assigned) due largely to the varied reading done in this class. My son has developed new interest in the way films and literature collide. Mr. Hoang was able to tackle serious topics and stay positive. He conveys a friendly, open attitude which makes him approachable to upper grade students, who take him up on his offer to proofread their college essays and give constructive feedback. This really helps with the flurry of essays seniors write in the fall and helps them build confidence. My son even to applied for a few scholarships which came with additional essay writing. Mr. Hoang greets students each day before class with the offer of a handshake. This contact is one that many of our teenagers have missed in this primary digital communication world. Being comfortable with a handshake and eye contact are a useful skill and the way that Mr. Hoang incorporates this into the start of each day is an additional bright spot. We are so appreciative of Mr. Hoang and the personal attention and caring he conveys to students, helping them to gain confidence and learn to express themselves clearly. He has made a real difference in our son’s senior year at CHS.
Click here to recognize an employee or volunteer who goes above and beyond to make a difference. Those who are "caught" will receive a copy of the positive words that were shared about them and a "Caught Being Awesome" decal. Please take a minute or two to brighten someone else's day!
