🍀 RCHS March Newsletter 🍀
Principal's Remarks...
Last night we hosted New Student Orientation to our incoming 9th grade class; it was a well attended, enthusiastic night that would not have been possible without the hard work of our staff and student leaders. Thank you to all that attended and made this a special evening. Next week our students will take their trimester 2 final exams...it's hard to believe that we are nearing the final months of this school year. Senior students and parents, these last few weeks of high school will go very quickly as we have several special events planned just for you. Soak it in. Just as we were excited to welcome the class of 2028 to the halls of RCHS, we are equally excited to congratulate and celebrate the class of 2024!! Finally, spring break is the final week of this busy month and we'd like to wish you all a safe and relaxing break that rejuvenates you as we sprint into the final stretch!
Warmly,
Mrs. Furkas & Mr. DiBrano

Meet the Math Department
Our teachers, why they teach & a fun fact about them...
Mrs. Ames--AP Stats, Intro to Stats, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, CP Algebra 2
- I think the idea that "girls can't be good at math" has changed over the last 25 years, but I've always tried to be a good role model to girls interested in math & science. I love teaching stats because it has real world application.
- I have a 17 month old grandson; Being a Grammy is the best!
- I love teaching people how to use ALL of their brain, ALL of the time, and to focus, be deliberate, and NEVER give up....and in our spare time, I teach some math.
- I'm not a tall guy but in high school, I was even shorter. When I was 16, I had a job driving a dump truck. I had to stand up straight to reach the gas pedal & see over the steering wheel!
Mrs. Bollin--Geometry, Algebra
- I love when I have a student in Algebra and then the following year in Geometry. It's exciting to see how much their skills have improved.
- I was out last trimester because I had a baby boy. It's so fun watching my toddler girl be the best big sis!!
Mr. Dodds--Co-Algebra , Co-Algebra 2, Intro to Coding, Programming, Economics
- I love helping students find that "aha" moment. It's a great feeling!
- I love pineapple, especially on pizza.
Mr. Gross--Geometry, Algebra 2, CP Algebra 2, Co-Algebra 2, PreCalculus
- I love teaching math because of the problem solving skills that are used in each class.
- I am a member of PBIS and a football coach at RCHS.
Mr. McLaughlin--Foundations of Math, Algebra, Sports Stats, CCR, Football & Basketball Tech
- I love the challenge of math & teaching it to students.
- All the boys' names in my family start with the letter "D".
Mr. Repp (student teacher)--Algebra 1, Algebra 2
- I love problem solving & helping students learn how to reason. I enjoy the simplicity of math always having a correct answer & not having to find the deeper understanding in texts.
- I can solve a Rubik's Cube very fast.
Mr. Riley--CP Algebra 2, Algebra 2, Psychology
- I want my students to know that teachers / coaches are people too; once they see us as people who care, they try harder so that we are proud of them.
- I coached varsity golf for 15 years and girls' basketball for 10 years.
- I became a math teacher because I love working with students. Math is a hard subject for many & I try to help students not be too anxious about it. It's rewarding when kids start to understand something that they had previously thought too confusing.
Mr. Shirlen--Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Senior Math
- I became a teacher to be a positive influence on my students & to make learning accessible to many of our students who struggle with math.
- My wife teaches elementary in the district and my three children attend school in Riverview.

Spanish 4 & 5 students visit Vicente's Cuban Cuisine
On February 9th, Mrs. Weber's Spanish 4 & 5 classes tried authentic Cuban dishes at Vicente's in Detroit with menu items based off the family recipes of the owner's mother. Students enjoyed typical Cuban dishes including tostones (plantains), sándwich cubano (Cuban sandwich), tres leches cake (three milks cake), flan (an egg-based custard with caramel), and learned about the effects of communism on Cuban culture.
Culinary Arts students spend the day with Chef Bryan
Chef Brian Psenski spent the day teaching the culinary students about cost control & cross utilization by demonstrating how to create the perfect Cuban sandwich.
Winter Spirit Week was held during the week of February 12 - 15
This was just what RCHS needed to break up the mid-winter blues! Students showed their Pirate Pride by participating in Spirit Days, donating items for individuals in need, supporting Kuts for Kids and participating in the Winter Pep Assembly! Donations of hats, gloves & socks were brought in for donation. Cash was also accepted as a donation. Cash donations would be used to purchase food and toiletries. The goal is to fill 50 backpacks with essential items for individuals who may visit the Oaks of Righteousness shelter and food bank. Each item or $1 donation earned students a raffle ticket to win either a Homecoming Ticket, a Junior/Senior Breakfast Ticket, or a Yearbook.
Kuts for Kids Donations!
Kuts for Kids held their 9th annual hair donation event during our Winter Pep Assembly. Six donors, including 3 students, 2 staff members and 1 community member donated 54 inches of hair! All donations were given to Children With Hair Loss founder, Regina Villemure, who attended the event and spoke with our student body about her organization and the wonderful things they do!
Riverview Cosmetology students, led by Ms. Frederick, prepped & trimmed them our donors.

RCHS TEACHER DANCE NIGHT
On Tuesday, 2/20, The teachers and the Dance Team took to the RCHS half time floor in our FIRST EVER Teacher Dance Night. The dancers picked their teacher partner, the song, choreographed the routine and lead their teacher in practice. The teachers stepped out of their comfort zones to learn the routines and perform in front of a crowd. Everyone on the floor and in the stands had a great time.
