Weekly Update
24th September 2026
A message from Mr Sibley
Dear parents,
It has been another busy and enjoyable week at DESS, with lots happening across the school.
On Monday, it was lovely to welcome our FS2 parents into school for our Phonics Morning. Mrs Thabet and Ms Newton led the session, sharing how we teach phonics at DESS and giving parents some useful ideas for supporting their children at home. I hope everyone who joined us found the morning informative and useful. Thank you to Mrs Thabet and Ms Newton for leading the session and to our parents for taking the time to come along.
Our sporting calendar has also got underway this week with our first volleyball fixture of the year. It is always fantastic to see our students representing DESS, and I know there will be lots more sporting opportunities and fixtures to look forward to as the year progresses. Please have a read of Mrs Blackhall’s report on this newsletter to find out how our students got on. A big thank you to Mrs Blackhall for taking the students to the fixture and supporting them.
Today, Mrs Urry led our Key Stage 1 assembly, where she spoke to the children about our school values and rules. Our values are such an important part of life at DESS, and assemblies like this give us a great opportunity to remind our children about the importance of being kind, respectful and responsible members of our school community.
As always, thank you to everyone who has contributed to another positive week at DESS. It is wonderful to see our children getting involved in so many different aspects of school life.
Enjoy your weekend.
E-Safety
Safe and Smart: Before You Click ‘Allow’
We have probably all done it — downloaded a new app, been presented with a list of permissions and quickly clicked ‘Allow’ without giving it too much thought!
Apps may ask for access to our camera, microphone, photographs, contacts or location. Sometimes there is a perfectly sensible reason for this, but not every app needs access to everything it asks for. Helping children get into the habit of stopping and asking, “Why does this app need that?” is a really simple but important digital literacy skill.
This is something we encourage our students to think about at DESS. Being safe online isn't just about avoiding obvious dangers; it is also about understanding the choices we make when using technology and thinking carefully about the personal information we share.
This week, why not spend five minutes together checking the permissions on your child's device?
On an iPhone or iPad:
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security. From here, you can select areas such as Location Services, Camera, Microphone, Photos or Contacts and see which apps have been given access. You can then switch access off for anything that doesn't need it.
On an Android device:
Go to Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. Here you can see which apps have permission to access features such as the camera, microphone, location and contacts, and change the permissions where appropriate. The exact wording may vary slightly depending on the device.
You can also look at individual apps together and ask a few simple questions: Does this app really need my location? Why does this game need access to my microphone? Does it need all of my photos, or could I give it access to selected ones?
It might also be a good opportunity for us adults to check our own devices! A small habit of pausing before clicking ‘Allow’ can make a big difference to the way children think about their privacy and personal information online.
School Photographs
School Portraits
This week, the children enjoyed having their portraits taken by Pret-a-Portrait. If your child missed their slot due to illness or absence, there's no need to worry — a catch-up session will be held on 3rd December. Pret-a-Portrait will also be returning in March to take whole-class photographs.
Sport
This week we had our Year 6, 7 and 8 girls’ friendly against ASD. Our girls showed fantastic effort and enthusiasm throughout all of their games, competing with great energy and determination. Although the results didn’t go our way, the girls thoroughly enjoyed the experience and showed excellent teamwork and sportsmanship throughout. A superb effort from all of the girls involved — well done everyone!
2026 House captains
Congratulations to the newly elected House Captains for this academic year.
