Chat with Ms. Cat
Parent Teacher conferences are coming up during the week of March 18th with nearly all being completed by March 22nd. We will hold conferences in the same format we offered in the fall. Please look for the google sheets to sign up for these conferences if you haven’t already done so. Spring conferences come at an important time of the year as we use these conversations to make ground in student achievement in the final quarter of the school year and to plan supports for the coming year. We structure them to provide talking points (areas of strength and areas for growth) in each core content area - often with work samples to guide the conversation. Parent Teacher conferences are important and a critical opportunity each spring to check on your child’s progress and identify areas to work on before year’s end. There will also be time for families and caregivers to ask questions. I look forward to seeing all of you during conferences and will be happy to check in on any questions or concerns you may have. Specialists will provide short narratives on work completed since the end of semester one.
Lastly, I want to remind folks that the Friends of Calais are sponsoring a return of the Spaghetti Dinner and Raffle this evening. This event has been incredibly popular with our community in the past and promises to be even better than previous events. What can be better than good company, good food, and the excitement of potentially winning? Doing something that brings community together is also a wonderful bonus. Hope to see you there!
Ms. Cat, CES Principal
Note from Nurse Maria
All families should have received an email today from the District regarding updated Covid-19 guidelines. We will now follow the same guidelines for all respiratory illnesses:
STAY HOME with new symptoms
Students may return when symptoms have significantly resolved and if a fever was present, they have been fever free for over 24 hours without the use of medication.
Please reach out to Nurse Maria with any questions or concerns about this change.
As always, please send in rain/snow gear every day with your student. We will have muddy conditions for a while yet! Grades 3 and under, please ensure your student has a change of clothes, including socks, at school.
Spring allergy season is going to be upon us any day now. If your student suffers from seasonal allergies and needs allergy medication, please be sure to give it at home before they come to school. The Health Office does not carry allergy medication.
Counselor's Corner
During the next few months, I will be teaching lessons during Guidance class that will feature a state curriculum called Care for Kids and We Care Elementary programs.
Care for Kids is a program for students K-2 that features a unit that teaches and reinforces 2 to 4 simple, age-appropriate messages via a circle time, a book, and an activity or craft. The activities are designed to compliment the fact that children of this age group learn naturally through play and use schemas to assimilate new information. Information is presented in a matter-of-fact way using anatomically correct language.
For students in grades 3-6, The We Care Elementary curriculum includes six lessons at each grade level. Each grade focuses on different topics related to healthy relationships. We Care Elementary moves beyond the concrete and physical nature of the Care for Kids lessons, capitalizing on children’s capacity for generalizing information and reflecting on their emotions and experiences.

Press Release
Unspoken Word
Join us for an enchanting evening as Stage 32, U-32 High School's award-winning Theater program, proudly presents Unspoken Word. This original on-act play, written by director of theater and playwright Erin Galligan-Baldwin, along with U-32 junior Calister Boyd, features writing and poetry contributed by members of Stage 32.
Unspoken Word tells the story of Piper, a 10th-grade student grappling with bullying and harassment following her parents' divorce and a move to a new school. To guide Piper through her challenges and facilitate a transformative journey, a magical visitor from the past emerges – none other than the pioneering 17th-century scientist and illustrator, Maria Sybilla Merian. Renowned for being the first to observe and document metamorphosis, Maria Sybilla Merian's story intertwines seamlessly with Piper's, creating a captivating experience for all.
Running less than an hour, Unspoken Word is a family-friendly production that promises to captivate hearts and minds alike. Join us for public performances on March 14 and March 29 at 7:00 PM in the U-32 Middle and High School Theater. Admission is by donation, making this accessible to all. For more details, please contact Erin at egalliganbaldwin@u32.org.
