Ten Years of Titans: Berea City School District School Showcase
Berea City Schools is have a “Ten Years of Titans” school showcase event at Berea-Midpark High School on Saturday, May 13 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
This event will kick off a yearlong celebration marking ten years since officially becoming Titans back during the start of the 2013-14 school year. Superintendent Tracy Wheeler will discuss the district’s new strategic plan, Destination 2027, and provide an overall update on the district. The event will also include student performances and coincide with our annual district art show. It will shine the spotlight on our students, our schools, district programs and initiatives, and have some interactive activities for families. Families who complete their passport at the event will receive a giveaway!*
The event is open to the entire community. Attendees will be able to enjoy the open house format of the event around the Superintendent’s scheduled presentation and performances they wish to attend. It’s an exciting re-imagination of our traditional State of the Schools event that puts more of our students and staff in the spotlight and allows the community to experience what it means to “Be a Titan.”
Titans share a collective responsibility to celebrate our three communities by honoring the district’s unique heritage. At the conclusion of the showcase event, the community is invited to attend the rededication of the Tree of Knowledge outside the Performing Arts Center at noon. Alumni, art enthusiasts, and community members contributed to the restoration and reinstallation fund for the sculpture.

BCSD Music Education Program Continues to Receive National Recognition
The Berea City School District has once again been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Now in its 24th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.
To qualify for the Best Communities designation, the district answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
Since the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015 and a stated emphasis on a well-rounded education, many school districts have re-committed to music and arts education programs. During the pandemic, music and arts programs were a vital component to keeping students engaged in school. ESSA provides designated funding for well-rounded educational opportunities through Title IV Part A Student Academic Success and Achievement grants. NAMM Foundation research has revealed that these grants are being widely used by school districts to address instructional gaps in access to music and arts education.
Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music: After two years of music education, researchers found that participants showed more substantial improvements in how the brain processes speech and reading scores than their less-involved peers and that students who are involved in music are not only more likely to graduate high school but also to attend college as well. In addition, everyday listening skills are stronger in musically trained children than in those without music training. Significantly, listening skills are closely tied to the ability to: perceive speech in a noisy background, pay attention, and keep sounds in memory. Later in life, individuals who took music lessons as children show stronger neural processing of sound: young adults and even older adults who have not played an instrument for up to 50 years show enhanced neural processing compared to their peers. Not to mention, social benefits include conflict resolution, teamwork skills, and how to give and receive constructive criticism.

The Berea Board of Education holds regular community conversations to give the public access to board members outside of the formal public participation setting of a meeting. Residents will have the opportunity to meet and discuss any concerns they may have with two board members during a 30 minute time-slot set aside prior to each regular scheduled Board of Education meeting. The goal of this effort is to more effectively connect with the public and learn more about the community.
