Attendance Reporting Just got easier with Safe Arrival
BBHES will be using SafeArrival, an attendance system designed to streamline absence reporting. It will allow for parents to report absences via an app, website, or phone number and will notify parents when their student is marked absent. Notifications will be sent via email, text message, and a follow-up phone call if the absence has not been reported after the initial messages.
Please be patient as we roll this new system out. If you notice an unexcused absence please notify Heather Rakestraw at 440-740-4109 on the next school day. It may take an overnight sync to update the error.

Important Reminder
To ensure all our students can safely join in the fun, please remember that all food treats brought for classroom parties must be store-bought and pre-packaged. With the increasing number of severe food allergies in our school community, we must have access to the official ingredient labels found on original packaging. This allows us to verify that snacks are safe for everyone and prevents accidental exposure to hidden allergens.
Below is a friendly reminder of what is allowed and not allowed for Birthdays. This is what is in the student handbook:
Birthdays can be a special time for children, especially when they can celebrate their special day at school with classmates, teachers, and staff. Because these treats are often messy, may contain allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, gluten, dairy, etc.) and are not nutritious, we are requesting that only non-food items be shared for birthday treats with classmates such as pencils, stickers, etc. Children with summer birthdays may participate, too. Contact the classroom teacher to arrange a date for the birthday celebration. We ask that you not send invitations to parties at your home through the classroom unless you are inviting the entire class OR all of the boys OR all of the girls in the class.

Friendly Reminders
- As we approach the end of the school year, excitement is in the air! With all the energy and anticipation, it’s a great time to remind our students about making positive choices at school. Please take a few minutes each day to talk with your child about being a PAX Leader — showing kindness, responsibility, and self-control. Encouraging these positive behaviors at home helps us finish the year strong together. Let’s work as a team to help our students shine!
- Please remind your child that open-toed shoes and sandals are not permitted at school and tennis shoes are a must on PE days! Thank you for your help!
- BBHCSD will operate on an adjusted dismissal schedule on Tuesday, June 2nd. All schools will dismiss two hours early. BBHES students will be dismissed at approximately 1:30 pm and buses will deliver your students two hours earlier than normal. Please be sure to update PikmyKid as well if your dismissal mode will change on the last day of school.
- Students with outstanding fee balances will not be permitted to attend upcoming coming field trips. Students not attending the field trips will be scheduled in another class on the day of the trip to participate in other activities while their classmates are on the field trip. Please note that all unpaid fees accumulate each year. If you need to pay fees or have any questions, please reach out to Sheyenne Uhlir at 440.740.4111.

One School, One Book
We are entering the final week of our One School, One Book journey, and what an incredible experience it has been! Our students have loved following Ralph’s adventures, and it has been so special to see our entire school community come together through this shared story.
As you wrap up the final chapters at home this week, we encourage you to take a few moments to reflect together—What was your favorite part? Which character did you connect with most? These conversations help bring the story to life even more!
To celebrate the conclusion of The Mouse and the Motorcycle, we have a fun surprise planned for Thursday—students will enjoy a special “room service” treat while watching the movie together at school! It’s the perfect way to wrap up our time at the Mountain View Inn and celebrate all the joy this book has brought us.
We would still love to see photos of your family enjoying the final chapters. Thank you for your partnership in making this such a memorable and meaningful experience for our students. We hope this is just the beginning of many more shared reading moments at home!
BBHES Recognized as a Purple Star School
BBH Elementary School is proud to be recognized as a Purple Heart School, honoring our commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families. This designation reflects the strong sense of respect, gratitude, and community we strive to build every day.
A special thank you to Halle Holub for her dedication to this important work. Through her efforts, our military families are supported with meaningful resources, thoughtful connections, and memorable experiences. From organizing our 2nd grade Veterans Day program to hosting a special lunch for students from military families, Halle has helped create opportunities for recognition, celebration, and belonging.
We are grateful for the service and sacrifice of our military families and proud to stand alongside them as a Purple Heart School.

One School, One Book
I am thrilled to announce that BBH Elementary School will be participating in One School, One Book again this year! We will be reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary.
The goal of this program is to bring our entire school community together through a shared reading experience. On Monday, April 13th, each student will receive a copy of the book to enjoy at home. A bookmark with a reading schedule will be included to help guide your progress each week, making it easy and fun to follow along. You can also use the QR codes on the bookmark to listen to chapters read aloud by the teachers at BBHE. Please click here to view the reading schedule.
This is a wonderful opportunity for families to bond and build excitement around literacy. At school, daily trivia questions and other fun activities will complement the reading experience. We can’t wait to share this special journey with all of you.
There a few needed items left on the wishlist that will enhance this experience for our kids. Thank you for your generosity and support. Click here to purchase from our AMAZON WISH LIST!

Unified Sports Showcase
BBHES proudly hosted its second annual Unified Sports Showcase on Friday, March 27th, bringing together athletes, partners, families, and staff for a truly special day. The morning began with a celebratory breakfast, giving athletes, partners, and parents time to connect and build community before the main event.
Following breakfast, our athletes took center stage to showcase the skills they have been developing throughout the school year. From teamwork and communication to perseverance and sportsmanship, each moment highlighted the dedication and growth of our students. The energy in the room was filled with excitement, encouragement, and pride as classmates and families cheered one another on.
This event continues to be a meaningful opportunity to celebrate inclusion, foster friendships, and recognize the unique strengths of every student. We are incredibly grateful to our teachers for their thoughtful planning and coordination, as well as to all staff, students and families who helped make the day such a success. It was a joyful reminder of what makes our BBHES community so special.
Second Grade Going for the Gold during Reading Olympics
BBHES second grade students recently participated in a competitive, instructional, and fun reading endeavor, cleverly named the Olympic Chapter Book Challenge! Taking place over a 42-day period of time, second graders attempted to read as many chapter books as possible. The challenge began on February 6th and ran through March 19th, with those completing their reading amounts with a spirited Medal Ceremony that took place on March 27th. The pictures show the second graders during that ceremony, reflecting a bolstered literary acumen, all while having fun in a friendly Olympic-like competitive challenge. Great job to all who participated!

The planning is underway for the 2026-2027 school year. Please take a moment to complete this survey to help us as we continue to plan for the upcoming school year. Thank you for your assistance.
One School, One Book
We are thrilled to announce that BBH Primary School will be participating in One School, One Book again this year! The goal of this program is to bring our entire school community together through a shared reading experience. Each student will receive a copy of the selected book on Monday, April 13th to enjoy together at home. A reading schedule will help guide your reading each week, making it easy and fun to follow along. Once the book is revealed to the students, an email will be sent to share the reading schedule and book title with the families.
The big reveal will happen on April 13th, when we’ll unveil the book to the students! This is a wonderful opportunity for families to come together and build excitement around reading. Stay tuned for more details, and we can’t wait to share this special journey with all of you. Happy reading!

Important Safety Reminders
BBH Elementary Families, thank you for your patience with our car rider lines. For the most part, the process is running smoothly thanks to your cooperation! To ensure everyone’s safety and keep the line moving efficiently, please note the following:
Also, keep in mind that at the end of the day, the walker option is only for those students who walk or bike to school. Parents may not use this option to avoid the pick up line. If your child leaves in a car, you must use the car line loop so everyone can remain safe.
- No solo walking: If you park, you must walk your child to the door. Please do not pull into the handicap parking and just let your child walk into the building. If you do not use the car loop you MUST walk your child to the front door.
- Drive safely: Please watch your speed and stay off devices; we've had a few near-misses lately.
- Use Blossom Field Exit: If Oakes Road is backed up in the morning, please use the alternate exit.
Thanks for helping us keep our kids, families, and staff safe!
Valentine Party Reminders
Classroom parties will take place Friday, February 13th. Please be reminded that all volunteers will need to check in with a driver's license . A driver's license is required for check-in. All party helpers for Kindergarten and First Grade must enter and exit through the preschool doors. Second grade helpers must enter at the main doors to check in.
Please be sure that all food sent in for parties is prepackaged and contains ingredients and nutritional information. This is critical for our students with allergies and medical needs. Please help us to keep our kids safe.
When parking is limited, please use the lot near the Blossom Hill Turf Field. We appreciate the City of Brecksville for allowing our families to use the overflow parking areas at Blossom Hill. It’s just a short walk to the building along the access road. Please do not make up additional spots along curbs. This creates a safety concern should any emergency vehicles need to arrive on our campus.
Thank you for your cooperation!

Winter Weather Salt Update
Dear School Community,
We would like to share an important update regarding winter weather operations across the district.
Similar to other school districts and municipalities throughout Northeast Ohio, our road salt supplier has notified us that salt availability is limited. As a result, the district will be rationing its supply and prioritizing treatment of critical areas, including main access roads, parking lots, and other high-traffic locations to ensure safety and accessibility.
At this time, ice melt used for sidewalks and walkways remains available. The school community can expect typical treatment of sidewalks, entrances, and pedestrian areas to continue as conditions require.
We appreciate your understanding and patience as we manage these supply constraints while continuing to focus on the safety of our students, staff, and community.
Thank you for your cooperation.

However, their campaign has a long way to go, with six more weeks and many more opportunities to contribute meaningfully.
Led by juniors Alexa Zetts, Billy Henning, and Madi Lupica, Team Horizon aims to raise more than $75,000 in support of life-saving research, patient care, and advocacy for those affected by blood cancers. Follow their campaign on Instagram @bloodcancerunitedteamhorizon and their team donation page linked here.

Cell Phones and Smartwatches
BBH Families, recently cell phones and smartwatches, especially the apple watches have become an issue. There are many smartwatches that have the same capabilities as a cell phone, and students have started using their smartwatches like a phone by calling and texting from it. Cellphones and Smartwatches are not permitted to be used throughout the day for texting and phone calls. All devices should be stored in your child's backpack and off. Below is what is in the student handbook.
To provide a safe environment free from disruptions to the educational process, students are expected not to bring the following items to school: cell phones, cameras, smartwatches and other non-educational items such as laser pointers, toys and other unnecessary items. BBHES can not be held responsible for lost or stolen items. Ohio Law requires districts to reduce cell phone distractions and limit cell phone use during school hours. Cell phones brought to school need to be turned off and stored in students' backpacks. These items will be confiscated if being used and appropriate consequences will be given. If confiscated twice, parents/guardians will be asked to pick the item(s) up from school.
Book Swap
Collections for the 4th Annual Book Swap will begin Tuesday, January 20th. There will be drop off boxes in all grade level pods, the front lobby and the Blossom Hill Field House entrance. We will be accepting gently used donations for reading levels from Preschool through Middle School.

PBIS Building-wide Expecations
Last week, Mr. Hartland and I met with all students to review our building expectations across key areas of the school day, including the cafeteria, hallways, recess, and the bus. We focused on our core foundation of being respectful, being responsible, and being ready to lead. We discussed what this looks like in daily routines—being respectful by using kind words, following adult directions, and keeping hands and feet to themselves; being responsible by cleaning up after themselves, staying in assigned areas, and taking care of school property; and being ready to lead by setting a positive example, helping others, and making good choices even when adults are not nearby. These expectations help ensure a safe, positive, and productive environment for everyone. We encourage families to follow up with their child at home to review these expectations and reinforce them together.
Report Cards
Report cards will be available to families in the PowerSchool Parent Portal on Friday, 1/16 at 4pm. Reminders from the School Clinic
As we are in cold and flu season, we would like to remind families of the district’s guidelines regarding student illness. Students who have a fever, are vomiting, or are experiencing diarrhea should remain at home. Students may return to school once they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and have been free from vomiting and diarrhea for at least 24 hours. Please do not send your child to school if they are ill, even if a test, special event, or fun activity is scheduled.
Additionally, regular handwashing continues to be one of the most effective ways to promote good health and prevent the spread of illness. We appreciate your continued cooperation and partnership in helping to keep our students and staff healthy throughout the cold and flu season.
Second Grade Gifted Testing
The State of Ohio requires school districts to offer whole-grade testing to all students for the purpose of gifted identification twice during their education. All 2nd-grade students will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) at school during the window of February 17 -27, 2026.
About Testing:
The CogAT measures overall cognitive and reasoning abilities that can assist teachers with instructional planning. Throughout the school year, students are also assessed on content-specific skills in the areas of reading and math on the I-Ready Assessment. The I-Ready Assessment helps teachers identify where the skills of students are most and least developed, so they can adapt curriculum and instruction accordingly. Additionally, we use the results from all of these tests to identify students who may qualify for gifted services or who may require additional testing for identification.
Test Preparation:
Make sure your child is in school and on time on test days, unless they are sick or have a fever.
Remind your child that these are not tests that they can study for, and they will not count for a grade.
Encourage your child to try their best.
If you do not want your child to participate in this whole-grade testing, please contact Lisa Mollica at mollical@bbhcsd.org directly, and she will provide an opt out form.
After testing is completed, a copy of the scores will be sent home with your child in their backpack. Please contact Lisa for additional information or with any questions that might arise.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing winter break and is feeling rested and rejuvenated as we begin a wonderful 2026. We are excited to welcome our students back to the building tomorrow, January 5. It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through the school year, with the first semester coming to a close this Friday—time truly flies!
A few important reminders : there will be no school for students on Monday, January 12, as teachers will be working to finalize report cards. Report cards will be available online through PowerSchool on Friday, January 16, at 4:00 p.m. A printed copy will also be sent home in your child’s folder that same day.
We look forward to seeing lots of smiles and hearing all about everyone’s winter break tomorrow!
Winter Weather
As the cold winter months are with us for a little while, please try to make sure your little ones are dressed appropriately when leaving the house. We will go outside if the weather is 20 degrees or higher. We do factor in the windchill too.
There are many coats, hats and gloves in the lost and found, so if you see that something is missing there is a good chance that is where you will find it. Please label all items so they can be returned to your child if lost.

Student Attendance
As school officials, we are required by HB 410, to ensure that students attend school when it is in session. Should your student exceed 65 absence hours, either excused and/or unexcused, this school year, our school policy may require you to provide written documentation from a medical professional, court official, or other professional for additional absence hours to be considered as excused. If documentation is not provided, those absences could be considered unexcused. Students who exceed the 65 hours of excused and/or unexcused absences will receive a letter from the school with further information. We are required by law to notify families, regardless if the absences are excused or unexcused, both types count toward the threshold. Letters will be sent home should your child meet this threshold. Parents will receive a follow-up phone call if the absences are negatively impacting progress. Otherwise, the letter will just serve as notification of threshold being met and no further action is required. Please be mindful of the school calendar and school hours, when scheduling appointments and trips.
Please report all student absences by emailing our attendance office at bbhesattendance@bbhcsd.org or by calling the attendance phone line 440-740-4100 option #1.

Dash for the Holidays
We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from our school community in making this year’s Dash for the Holidays such a success. Students and staff had a wonderful time walking and jogging around the fieldhouse track during Friday’s festive event. Thanks to the generosity of our families and community partners, 52 students were able to participate in the Shop with a First Responder experience on Saturday—an unforgettable opportunity made possible by you.
A special thank you to Mr. Rinehart and Mrs. Pratt for organizing the Dash for the Holidays, and to Officer Mark for his outstanding efforts in coordinating Shop with a First Responder.
Thank you for your kindness, spirit, and continued support of our school community! The smiles on our students’ faces said it all. You truly helped make the holidays brighter for so many of our kids.

Happy Thanksgiving BBH Primary!
As we pause for the Thanksgiving holiday, I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to all of you—our wonderful students, dedicated staff, and incredibly supportive families.
It truly is a gift to walk the halls of BBH Primary School each day and witness the spark of learning in our kindergarten, first, and second-grade classrooms. We are so fortunate to have such caring families who partner with us every step of the way, helping to foster a positive, nurturing, and exciting learning environment. Thank you for your commitment, your enthusiasm, and for entrusting your children to us. Your support makes all the difference.
This time of year is especially meaningful for my own family. We are thrilled that my son, John, will be home from college this week, and we are looking forward to the simple joys of being together and sharing a meal at grandma and poppy's house!
I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends! It's not about the meal, but the joy of being together! We look forward to welcoming our K-2 students back, refreshed and ready to learn, when school resumes on Monday, December 1st.

Tootle Train
The students have been busy earning Tootles for their positive behavior in and out of the classroom. The train has arrived at it's next stop of 1,000 Tootles, so the prize wheel will be spun this week. Be on the lookout to see what our K-2 students will win this week! Congratulations to our students for making positive choices and being PAX leaders! Keep up the great job!
Thank you Veterans!
At BBHES, Veterans Day was an important day for our students. We shared our sincere appreciation for our veterans and all they have done through a series of school-wide activities. Classrooms learned how important our veterans are, and students wrote heartfelt letters to express their thanks and gratitude. The community's appreciation was evident as Don Day collected boxes and boxes of candy to donate to the Veterans. Families helped purchase items to show our veterans how much we valued them through the link the 5th grade shared to families. To cap it all off, the 2nd graders had a wonderful recognition assembly that brought in our very own Veterans. A huge thank you to Mrs. Holub, the music department, and the entire second grade team for the special program to honor our veteran family and friends. It was such a memorable event. Please check out the photos below.

Reminder from our School Clinic
As we enter cold and flu season, we would like to remind families of the district’s guidelines regarding student illness. Students who have a fever, are vomiting, or are experiencing diarrhea should remain at home. Students may return to school once they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and have been free from vomiting and diarrhea for at least 24 hours.
Additionally, regular handwashing continues to be one of the most effective ways to promote health and prevent the spread of infection. We appreciate your continued cooperation in helping to keep our students and staff healthy throughout this cold and flu season.
Purple Up! Day for our Military Families
We recognizes and respects all those who serve the United States Military, especially military families. We are dedicated to aiding our military families by providing an individualized support team and additional resources to our military-connected students. We also consider ourselves ambassadors to the military by providing special programming and events that raise awareness and promote military opportunities and patriotism. Halloween Reminders
Classroom parties will take place tomorrow, Friday, October 31st. Please be reminded that all volunteers will need to check in at the reception desk with a driver's license to create a visitor badge through our Centegix system.
Halloween Costumes
Children are permitted to wear a simple Halloween costume to school tomorrow. Please see the costume guidelines below.
Costumes should not impact the student's ability to be transported to school nor impact their ability to participate in learning activities throughout the day.
Masks are not permitted as part of the costume.
Children are to WEAR THEIR COSTUMES TO SCHOOL and will keep them on throughout the day.
Costumes should be fun and appropriate as opposed to costumes that depict blood, violence, death, or gruesome in nature. Offensive costumes should not be worn and no weapons or fake blood should be brought to school.
Makeup or face paint should not be a part of your child’s costume for school.
Please plan for costumes to be comfortable and not big and bulky, as students will be wearing them throughout the day. Please help to ensure that costumes for our younger students do not restrict the ability to independently use the bathroom. Thank you!

Dress Mrs. Toth for the Day
This year a few new raffle prizes were added to the back to school bash! We had a student lead the band on elementary football night; a student play the intermediate principals in a game of Mario Kart, and a second grader dressed Mrs. Toth for the day.
When I donated this prize, I envisioned dressing in a student's favorite jersey or a mismatched outfit. Never did I think I would be a banana!! I fulfilled the promise last Wednesday, and dressed up as a banana for Jackson. It was a fun day!
Please Help Us!
As the weather gets colder and wetter, this is a friendly reminder to help keep our kiddos safe. Students at the elementary school are not permitted to wear sandals, slippers, or aquatic shoes to school. All shoes must be close toed. Also, remember to send your child in tennis shoes on physical education days. Thank you for your help in keeping our kids safe.

Some of the possible prizes include PJ Day, Movie at Lunch, Stuffy Day, Hat Day, and more!
Tootles are earned by students who demonstrate PAX behavior in all areas of the school. I can’t wait to see their smiles as they continue to earn Tootles and show kindness, responsibility, and teamwork every day!

Report Cards and Conferences
This year at the K-2 level, there will be a slight change to our reporting process for first quarter. Instead of sending home a report card to families, teachers will share student progress during conferences. This shift allows for more meaningful conversations with K-2 families and provides teachers the opportunity to highlight each child’s growth and goals in a personal way. Conference nights are held on the following evenings:
October 23rd: Grades 1 and 2
November 6th: Kindergarten
November 13th: Grades K-2
Additional conferences may be held on October 20th. Your child's classroom teacher will send home a schedule as we get closer. Students in grades K-2 will receive their first report card at the end of the second quarter. Please reach out to your child's teacher should you have any questions about your child's progress anytime throughout the school year. We are partners in your child's learning.
No Fuss Fundraiser
Keeping with tradition, this fundraiser is designed to be simple. No selling, no events, no hassling, just simple.
100% of the proceeds from this campaign will directly enrich the academic experience of our elementary students. This is our biggest fundraiser and fuels the PSOs most important initiatives, including cultural arts events and assemblies, positive behavior rewards, early literacy resources, school and community events, and STEM initiatives.
This year our goal is to raise $22,000. If we can surpass that and raise $25,000 PSO will throw all the students a Glow Lunch!

BBH PSO Meet the Candidates Wrap Up
Thank you to everybody that attended the BBH PSO Meet the Candidates event, whether in person or virtually. We estimated that over 100 people attended in person and the youtube recording has over 800 views. A recording of the Meet the Candidates for BBHCSD School Board event is available online at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/live/kCemZaOCtxE?si=UlDkXG_dVPGjwE7V . Note that the video begins around the 50-minute mark. Additionally, there were sound issues during the first two candidate introductions; a document containing the text has been linked in the description section of the livestream. This event would not have been successful without the support of many different groups. Thank you to the community members who submitted questions, to the candidates for attending, to Mrs. Monteleone for coordinating HS volunteers, and to the BBH Middle School for hosting. A special Thank You goes to Myles Rapkin and Multi-Track Productions for coordinating and running the livestream. Without them, the livestream would not have been possible. With over 800 views (and counting), it is a valuable resource to the BBH community. Don't forget to vote on November 4!

Class Party Sign-ups
The Room Parent Liaisons are ready and excited to start planning their classroom parties! Besides one room parent, each homeroom is in need of three additional volunteers to help during the parties. Also, there is an alternate volunteer spot in each classroom that may be called upon (even on the day of the party) if a volunteer is not able to make it. If you are interested in volunteering to help at a class party, please see the information below:
- Each family may only sign-up to volunteer for one party in their child's classroom at this time.
- The person volunteering must help throughout the whole party, please do not volunteer if you cannot be there the whole time.
- A background check is not required for the person volunteering for the party.
If you are unable to attend or all time slots are full, don’t worry you will still be able to contribute to the party. Each classroom will have their own sign-up for snacks, crafts and games as the parties get closer. We understand that a classroom may have more volunteers than spots allow, if that is the case, please consider volunteering during lunch or during any of the evening or weekend PSO events throughout the year.
Important note: The End of the Year party date/time has not been decided yet so it will not be included in this sign-up.
Please reach out to your Room Parent Liaisons or Grade Level Room Parent Coordinator with any questions.

Please check out our recent Tootle Raffle winners. These students were recognized for being PAX leaders and earned a ride down the slide! Congratulations!
Peek at our Week!
Student Recognition at BBH Primary!
At BBHES Primary we have started three new ways to recognize and reward expectational PAX leaders: Bee Your Best Beestro, Character Counts, and Tootle Slide Winners. Remember PAX leaders are students who make choices for themselves that affect the way others feel to make our school a peaceful, safe and happy place to learn and play.
- The Bee Your Best Beestro is a special luncheon that is delightfully set-up on our stage during each grade level lunch period. One student from each classroom is nominated by their teacher for consistently exhibiting PAX Leader choices. These children are invited to eat lunch on the stage with the other PAX Leaders, receive a crown and are praised and joined by building and district administration.
- For Character Counts, each month, BBHES will focus on a different character trait of a good PAX leader to help bring self awareness to certain characteristics. We will be on the lookout for students who display these character traits. Approximately 5 teachers per grade level will nominate one student per month who has represented that Character Counts trait/word the most during that specific month. Those students will receive a book token for the Book Vending Machine.
- Tootles are special notes that any staff member can give to any student. All the Tootles for a grade level are put into a lottery. Six names are pulled out of the pot each week and those winners get to go down the slide. Their photos are always posted in this newsletter. We also count the weekly tootles earned by our K-2 students and move the Tootle Train. When the train arrives at the stop, we will spin the prize wheel and all students will earn the prize! Such a fun way to recognize our students.
Attendance Reminders
We appreciate your cooperation in helping us keep accurate attendance records! Just a friendly reminder that for now, please report all student absences by emailing our attendance office at bbhesattendance@bbhcsd.org or by calling the attendance phone line 440-740-4100 option #1.
The Safe Arrival app in PowerSchool is not currently in use for our school. We are working on a plan for its implementation and will share more information with you in the near future. Your continued use of our current system helps us ensure that every child is accounted for each day. Thank you for your understanding!

Benchmark Assessments
Students in grades K-2 will be taking the beginning of the year benchmark assessment for reading skills beginning this week:
- Kindergarten students will be assessed using a one on one assessment called Acadience. It will focus on First Sound Fluency and Letter Naming Fluency.
- First grade students will be assessed using Acadience which will include Letter Naming Fluency, Phoneme Segmentation Fluency, Nonsense Word Fluency Correct Letter Sounds.
- Second grade students will be assessed using Acadience which will focus on Nonsense Word Fluency, Oral Ready Fluency with Retell (Comprehension).
These assessments will give our teachers baseline data for the year and measure whether a student is on track or not on track for reading at grade level according to the previous year’s end-of-year standards. All students who are not on track, based on these assessments will be provided a Reading Intervention Monitoring Plan (RIMP).
Our K-2 students will also be administered the i-Ready math diagnostic to identify strengths and challenges in the five domains: Number and Operations, Algebra and Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data, and Geometry.
These results will be discussed with families at parent teacher conferences in October and November. Please be reminded that students in K-2 will not receive a first quarter report card, but instead, progress will be communicated at conferences.

This Week's Tootle Raffle Winners
Each week, we proudly recognize several students for being PAX Leaders. Students can earn Tootles throughout the school day when staff notice them demonstrating positive behaviors such as kindness, respect, responsibility, and teamwork. Every Tootle is a celebration of students making our school a better place.
At the end of the week, all Tootles are entered into a raffle. The lucky winners are celebrated and earn the special reward of a ride down the slide! We love seeing students rise to the challenge of being role models, and we are so proud of all of our PAX Leaders.
Fun at BBH Primary School
Elementary Football Night
Thank you to our HS students who joined us on Friday to get the kids excited for Elementary Football Night. We had football players, cheerleaders, and members of the Marching Bees! Thank you to Eleanor Gibb who led us on a parade around the school as the winner of this raffle prize. A huge thank you to PSO for hosting a fun tailgate before the Friday night football game! Lots of fun and lots of smiles!
Car Drop- Off Reminders
To make our morning drop-off smooth and safe for everyone, we're asking that all children who are dropped off by car be at school by 9:00 a.m.
When entering the circle, please be mindful of the cars and people around you and drive slowly. If you're running behind, there's no need to rush. We ask that you park and walk your child into the building instead of hurrying through the car line.
This will also allow our staff to get inside the building on time to start the school day. We appreciate your help in making this a safe and efficient process!
Families who utilize our before school and after school Beekeeper Program must park in a designated parking spot in the lot. Please do not park in the drop off loop. This is a fire lane. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
School Fees Due Now
School fees for students in grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade are $85.00 ($65 instructional fee and $20 Technology Fee). You may pay these online at https://www.payschoolscentral.com or send a check payable to BBHES. Please note that unpaid fees may result in your child not attending upcoming field trips. School fee waivers are available to those families who qualify. An application must be completed. Please review the application information here. Please reach out to Lisa Levine with any questions regarding school fees at 440.740.4111.
Safety Drills at BBHES
Every month, we are required to conduct safety drills in Ohio public schools. We have already conducted a rapid evacuation drill commonly used in the event of a fire. Our students did an amazing job and followed the proper procedures by quickly evacuating the building and proceeding to their meeting points. I am proud of the students for listening and following the directions during this drill.
Throughout the school year, we will have various drills including, fire drills, tornado drills, lockdown drills, and shelter in place drills. We conduct these drills to practice in the event we must initiate any of these situations.
School Attendance
BBHES will continue to focus on school attendance this year and the importance of getting your child to school on time. School begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. This means that your children must be in their classrooms ready to learn at this time. If your child will be absent from school, please call the attendance call-off line at 440-740-4100 no later than 9:00 a.m. Please be sure to leave your name, your child's name and teacher, and the reason for your child's absence. If you do not leave a reason, your child's absence will be marked as unexcused.
Regular school attendance is essential for your child's academic success, personal development, and future opportunities. To ensure your children attend school consistently, establish a daily routine that includes a set wake-up time, breakfast, and a consistent departure schedule.

Expected Behavior at BBH Primary
Mr. Hartland and I met with every student in grades K–2 to review the expectations for different areas around BBHES. Our students did a fantastic job demonstrating what it means to be true PAX Leaders as we practiced expectations for the bathroom, bus, cafeteria, recess, and hallways. Please click the image below to view the rules and expectations at BBH Primary. We encourage parents to review and reinforce these expectations with their children so that, together, we can continue to build a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment for all..

We had an amazing start to the school year. A huge thank you to the staff, students, and families for their help in making it a success!
We cannot wait to have our kindergarten students arrive on Monday for their first day of school. To ensure a smooth and safe arrival of our students, please refrain from exiting your cars at drop-off. Staff will open the car doors for your younger children and help them exit your vehicle safely from the passenger side. Please pull all the way up in the line and follow the directions from our wonderful arrival staff! They are here to help your children get into the building. Also remember that if you will be picking up your child from school at the end of the day, please use the PikMyKid App and have your dismissal tag displayed in your car. Thank you for doing your part in assisting our staff to make our first day of kindergarten run smoothly.
First Week of School
The smiles in the picture say it all—what an incredible first week at BBH Primary! Our students filled the building with excitement, laughter, and joy as they settled into routines, met new friends, and discovered all the wonderful learning ahead. We are so proud of the great start and can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings!
Welcome Back Party
Thank you to our amazing and wonderful PSO!!! Thank you to all of our volunteers!!! This fantastic event isn't possible without the planning and commitment of our PSO and volunteers.
Friday it was so nice to see all of the families that were able to attend. The smiles, laughter, catching up with one another is what administration witnessed most, and this is simply priceless. Thank you to all the families that were able to attend, especially after a long day of work.
Important Reminders
- Please be sure that your PikMyKid Default is set. Families will no longer be able to change the default mode after Monday. Any changes to dismissal modes must be done through the calendar on the app. If your default must change during the year, please notify your child's grade-level secretary. Remember the default mode is the mode your child will use most frequently during the week (bus, car line, after school beekeepers, walker, etc)
- Please label all lunch boxes with your child's first and last name.
- Phones and Smartwatches are not permitted to be used throughout the day for texting/phone calls. All devices should be stored in your child's backpack.
- The reception area is open from 8:00 - 4:30. This means that a BBHES staff will answer the door and phone lines during this time.
- Please bring your ID if you pick up your child during the day or if you volunteer at school.
Recess Expectations at BBH Primary
At BBH Primary, we’re kicking off the year with a brand-new way to enjoy recess! Over the next three weeks, students will take part in daily lessons to explore all the fun areas of our playground. Each class will spend time in one of our five exciting spots—Hilton Hoops, Highland Hive, Chippewa Challenge, Central Station, and Wellness Way—where they’ll learn the rules of the games, practice using the equipment, and have plenty of time to “play with purpose.”
Classroom teachers will preview expectations each day, and recess monitors will model and support students on the playground. By teaching routines up front, we are setting the foundation for a safe, fun, and inclusive recess experience all year long.
Our amazing recess monitors are also working hard to build connections by learning student names and being trusted adults on the playground. With clear expectations and strong relationships in place, we’re creating a recess that’s safe, welcoming, and full of smiles for every child!

First Day of School Reminders
- For the safety of all of our staff, students and families, please utilize the drop off loop for arrival. Parents should remain in the car
- Please be sure to update your PikMyKid app to reflect your child's dismissal plan for the first day of school. All students were defaulted to bus, so it is important for parents to make the necessary changes in the app if your child will not be riding the bus home. The most up to date bus numbers will be found on our website/ Here Comes the Bus App NOT PikMyKid. If there is a discrepancy, please let Melody and Mrs. Toth know so we can manually change the bus number in PikMyKid.
- Please do not drop your child off prior to 8:45 am. All cars will line up in the front loop of the school. Staff will be outside to assist so parents should not exit vehicles. All students must exit on the curbside of the car.
- When sending in money for your child's lunch account, please label it clearly with your child's first and last name in the memo line.Beekeeper families must park in the lot and enter the building to sign in their child. There is absolutely no parking in the front loop at any time.
- Please bring your driver's license when volunteering in the building or picking up a child. We will not release a child to any adult without the proper identification.
- Please label all lunchboxes, water bottles, and coats so they can be returned to your child if found.
- Please review the traffic flow map for arrival and dismissal.
Kindergarten Phase-in
We look forward to seeing our kindergarten families at phase-in this week during your scheduled day/time. Just a reminder that parents should arrive and depart through the preschool doors which is the first drive when entering the campus. We are so excited to see our NEW BEES! Welcome to BBH Primary School!
Cell Phones and Smartwatches
Phones and Smartwatches are not permitted to be used throughout the day for texting/phone calls. This also includes field trips. These should be stored in your child's backpack or kept at home.
If a cell phone, smartwatch, or other device needs to be addressed for any reason we will utilize this protocol:
1st: Time is a warning by staff and student will put it away in their locker.
2nd: The device will be taken and given back at the end of the day. Parents will be notified.
3rd: The device will be taken and parents will have to come and pick it up after school.
First Day of School Signs
BBHCSD families are encouraged to celebrate their student’s first day of school by sharing photos of their student with a First Day of School Sign on social media. Important Dismissal Reminders
- All PikMyKid accounts have been defaulted to "Bus". All families must download the app and make the necessary change in PikMyKid for car pick-up, afterschool beekeepers, walkers, or afterschool clubs. Please default your account to the dismissal mode your child will use on a regular basis. Daily and reoccurring changes can be made by clicking on the dates needed for a change within the app. If you do not change your child's dismissal mode prior to the first day of school, your child will ride the bus home on that day. For more information on downloading Pikmykid, please reference the information below.
- Any changes in dismissal modes must be changed in your Pikmykid account no later than 2:30 pm. If you need assistance with this process, please email or call Mrs. Melody Davies.
- Display all car tags so they can be easily seen by our dismissal team. All first and second grade families will be provided a tag during the Meet and Greets. Kindergarten families will receive their tags at phase-in. Please keep them in your cars even if car pick-up is not your primary mode. We use these tags in the event of an emergency as well.
- Please be sure to obey ALL traffic signs in the parking lot. I frequently witness cars entering the lot where signs are clearly posted as an exit only. Thank you for your help in keeping everyone safe.
- If you need to pick up your child early, please make sure to park, come in, and sign out your child prior to 2:45 pm. No early dismissals after this time. We will not release a child to an adult without the proper identification, so please bring your driver's license.
- All walkers and bikes will be picked up on the sidewalk near the preschool. A staff member will cross the students and meet families on the north side of the property. Parents are not permitted to pick up walkers/bikers at the building/doors.
Additional PikMyKid Information
BBHES will continue to use the PikMyKid dismissal application this school year just like last year. The student information should still be populated in the program. Your child's car tag number should remain the same as last school year. All families will get a car tag which can be picked up at the Meet and Greets.
If you are not familiar with the app, please download it and review the information below.
PikMyKid is a dismissal software that is intended to simplify dismissal, reduce traffic congestion, and most importantly, improve overall safety. The unique features of PikMyKid allow you, as parents, to easily change pick-up modes, quickly delegate to an alternate individual for pickup, change to an ‘After School’ program, and even schedule for future pickup mode, pickup individual, and after-school programs. This app allows you to be in full control of your child’s dismissal and it gives the school information regarding dismissal and the ability to acknowledge every change and instantly check your child’s dismissal status should you have a question.
To Learn a little more on your own, please check out the following link that will show you a few of the PikMyKid features. https://www.pikmykid.com/features/for-parents/
All families will need to download the application and complete the registration process if not already done.
Below are a few resources to assist with the process.
New Family Orientation
Here is the presentation shared at the new family orientation last night. It was so nice to meet so many new faces and welcome you to BBH Primary School!
Important Bus Information
As we prepare for the start of a new school year, we want to thank you in advance for your patience and understanding in the first few days and weeks of school as bus drivers begin to navigate new bus routes and new bus riders learn procedures to help ensure safe and timely pick-ups and drop-offs each day. Initial delays in pick-up times may occur, but rest assured, if your bus is running a bit behind during this initial learning phase for riders, transportation is coming.
Here are a few reminders of actions that can be taken to keep our students, drivers, and the community at large as safe as possible during transport.
- Be at the bus stop five minutes prior to stop time.
- Always know your place of safety. This will be assigned by your driver.
- Be aware of the “Danger Zone” – remember to stay 10 feet away from the bus to help ensure that the driver can see you. Never walk behind the bus.
- Use handrails when entering and exiting the school bus. Enter and exit in a single-file line.
- Always keep aisles clear by keeping backpacks and other personal items on laps.
- Students must stay in their seats, facing forward. Do not cause any distractions for the drivers.
- Stop, look left and right, and listen when crossing the street. Please wait for the driver to signal that it is safe to cross.
- To ensure safety at railroad crossings, always remain quiet until the bus has crossed the railroad tracks and the driver says it is okay to resume talking.
- Know where all emergency exits are and, in the case of an emergency, be sure to listen to drivers for any instructions.
Motorists : Please Follow All Traffic Laws Regarding Buses
According to the most recent one-day survey, school buses are illegally passed over 225,000 times every day in America. The National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) reports that more than 114,000 school bus drivers in 36 states witnessed more than 67,000 vehicles illegally passing their buses. When scaled nationally, it equates to a staggering 39.3 million dangerous violations each school year. In Ohio, more than 1,400 drivers reported 462 left-side illegal passes and 17 on the right side; scaling the numbers annually equates to over 4,500 on the left side and 170 on the right.
School bus traffic laws are in effect for the safety of children or other passengers entering or leaving a school bus. Children often will be crossing the street at the bus stop, so these laws are extremely important for their safety.

Class Placements and Transportation
Kindergarten families should have received their child's classroom teacher and information for Phase-in. If you need any help navigating the sign-ups, please reach out to Mrs. Davies.
Classroom assignments will be available to families in first and second grade on August 11th. An email will be sent to the primary contact in PowerSchool. Much thought and planning has gone into making our class lists the best we can for all students. A great deal was taken into account, such as academic strengths and challenges, social and emotional needs, the parent input form from the spring and teacher input.
We will not begin to consider class placement changes until after the first three weeks of school unless there is a clerical error or academic misplacement. This will allow your child an opportunity to acclimate to the school and build relationships with staff and students. Please reach out as we approach the third week of school if you still want this request to be considered.
Transportation information will be made available on the district website. Feel free to contact our Transportation Department (440-740-4050) should you have questions about your child's bus route.
