WelcomeBack!August 23, 2024

Hello Brown School Families,

As we enter the last days of September, we are happy to see so many students feeling confident about the year ahead. Our entire staff has been making strong efforts each day to help our students acclimate to a new grade, classroom, schedule, routines and expectations. We still have a few students struggling with the transition into school in the morning, and we understand for some it can be a monumental challenge. As tempting and intuitive as it may seem to come into the building and walk your child to class, we are asking parents to please come to the office if your child is struggling. The habit of parents coming onto the building is harder to break the longer it goes on into the year. Please know we are here to help in any way we can. We can help walk your child into the building, dry impending tears, and comfort students who need a little extra time. If your child is struggling, please know our school counselors are available to talk through the challenges and support you and your child in whatever way is needed.

We are all looking forward to meeting you all at Open House this tomorrow evening, Thursday, September 25. If you missed the timing information in the last email, the details are below.

Please check the reminders for School Picture Day, Monster Mash and upcoming No School Days.

See you all tomorrow night!

It's always impressive when our students participate in an extra project, but i's especially impressive when they put their efforts toward something that will benefit others.

Each year, The Friends of Marblehead Public Schools invite people to submit a grant for services and resources to enhance our schools. Last year, School Counselor Kara Elmer, and First Grade Teacher Rachel Leavitt worked with a group of third graders who thought it was high time we had some sturdy soccer nets on the playground to use during recess time. Kayson Debernardi, Samantha Freedman, Matthew Benarbe, Maeve Corbette, and June Gray wrote a proposal accompanied by a video to make the soccer nets a reality. Even though these third graders knew they would be moving on from the Brown School this year, and would not reap the personal benefits of the new soccer goals, they persisted in their efforts. Their grant was approved and our students are very grateful to them for their efforts. Last week a few of those students came back to Brown for the ribbon cutting. Bravo and Thank you!!

Another Friendly Reminder

We fully understand the challenges of a large neighborhood school, surrounded by narrow streets, with typically congested morning traffic, which is why it is so important that we all work together on this one. Here are some reminders to help things go as smoothly as possible during arrival and dismissal:

1. Please do not pull into the main circular driveway in front of the school. This is meant for busses only.

2. Our staff leaves the front row of the parking lot, as well as the side spaces adjacent to Baldwin Road open for pick up and drop off. The spaces are meant for Kindergarten and PK to keep our youngest kiddos as safe as possible in the parking lot. If you are staying for any length of time, please park in the other rows in the lot or on Baldwin, Jane, Colgate, Dartmouth, or other nearby streets so we can keep cycle through as many folks as possible in these spaces.

3. The small valet drop off/pick up area in front of the school is designated for the PK and Kindergarten classrooms on that side of the building. Please be sure to only use those if your child is in Mrs. Connolly, Ms. Simmons, Mrs. Ross or Mrs. Hecht's class.

4. And, please be sure to leave the handicap parking spaces for those who have the appropriate plate or placard.

5. For the carline, please be sure to keep traffic moving safely. (And a little hint...if you are not in a hurry at the end of the day, skip the traffic and come around 2:35. Typically you can get right into the carline and move right through at that time.)

We know it can be trying if you are in a time crunch, truly, we understand the challenges. I ask us all to work together and exercise patience during these busy times. Many thanks.
