6th Grade Creek Week

MTMS has been lucky to partner with Friends of the Kaw for several years, and 6th grade wrapped up Creek Week this past week. We welcomed Mr. Joey & Ms. Nancy for a week to learn about our watersheds and evaluate the health of our local stream on campus.

We visited Clear Creek, where we conducted testing of the pollution levels (phosphates, nitrates and dissolved solid levels) as well as water health (oxygenation, pH levels and sediment turbidity). Students also worked inside the creek to collect macroinvertebrates and identify species to determine long-term water quality based upon the species present.

To finish up the week, we evaluated our lab results and are creating informational posters to share with the community with ways to improve our local watershed.

Students in Spanish I made guacamole in a traditional molcajete to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!
