WCCUSD Announces Temporary Summer Closures for Four High School Campuses

RICHMOND, CA – The West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) is announcing temporary summer closures at several high school campuses to allow for critical construction, maintenance, and infrastructure upgrades. Due to our academic calendar and the demands of our campuses, the summer months are the designated time to complete these critical needs projects. The closures, scheduled to take place between June 23, 2025, and August 4, 2025, are necessary to minimize disruption during the academic year and to ensure the safety of students, staff, and community members.

The following high school campuses will be impacted:

  • Richmond High School: Closed from July 14 – August 4, 2025

  • Kennedy High School: Closed from June 23 – August 4, 2025

  • El Cerrito High School: Closed from June 23 – August 4, 2025

  • De Anza High School: Closed from June 23 – August 4, 2025

In addition to critical maintenance closures, El Cerrito High School continues to operate on temporary generators to power the campus as we schedule needed repairs in the coming months. Extended generator use for this campus during the summer is not fiscally sustainable. The District is working to complete permanent repairs to the electrical system as quickly as possible.

“These temporary closures are necessary as the District undergoes critical construction and infrastructure work at each of these sites,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Kim Moses. “Restoring permanent power to El Cerrito High School is a top priority, and we appreciate the community’s patience during this process.”

WCCUSD acknowledges that these closures may affect summer programs, athletic training, and community events. District staff are working diligently to assign alternate locations to support summer conditioning, student engagement, and programming. A full list of approved alternate sites, including summer school locations, will be released next week.

“We are committed to working closely with school sites, staff, and community members to ensure a smooth transition and continued access to summer services at alternate locations,” Dr. Moses added.

While news of these closures has begun circulating in the community, the District is prioritizing transparency and swift communication to ensure families and community members have accurate, up-to-date information before the temporary closures take effect. A feedback form has been made available for anyone wishing to submit questions or concerns.

WCCUSD thanks families and community members for their continued support and understanding as the District prepares campuses for the upcoming school year.

The first day of school for the 2025-26 school year is August 19, 2025, and WCCUSD looks forward to welcoming students back to their campuses.
