Mental Health/Substance Use Resources are Available

Dear Parents and Guardians of the Clearview Regional School District School Community,

Youth mental health is a topic of utmost importance, and we believe that by working together, we can create a supportive environment where our children can thrive.

As we start the new school year, we want to remind you of the invaluable resources available to our community.

Mrs. Datz and Ms. Wraga visited all of the 9th grade English classes! Mrs. Datz and Ms. Wraga visited all of the 9th grade English classes!

Mrs. Datz and Ms. Wraga were lucky enough to visit all 9th grade English classes during the week of September 23rd to the 25th. We shared some advice about what to do if they are struggling in a class academically (talk to teacher, then someone at home, then school counselor). Next, we talked about how important it is to stay organized with classes (using a planner (digital or paper), cleaning out their email as a lot of information is sent via email). Lastly, we discussed the importance of developing connections with their peers, teachers, and other staff in the school.

Some other helpful tips included:

1. Identify their school counselor and the location of the school counseling office.

2. Show students how to make an appointment with their school counselor, case worker, or Mrs. Datz.

3. Discussion of the roles of both the school counselor and Student Assistance Counselor and how we can help them.

4. Confidentiality - We need to break confidentiality when there is talk of harm to self, harm to others, or someone is harming them.

5. Introduction of Class Advisors (Mrs. Doughten and Mr. Haye). They plan all of the fun things at the View including: fundraisers, Homecoming, Powder Puff, Prom, and Senior Trip.

6. Introduction of our School Resource Officer (Officer Dillon) from the Harrison Township Police Department.

7. Introduction of our Clearview Administration including Assistant Principals -Mr. Jones and Mr. Holm, and our principal, Mr. Brook. We will also have another Assistant Principal joining us in mid-October.

8. How to get involved in Clubs and Activities at the View - please see both documents below and discuss with your child.

We look forward to working with our new students in the high school!

Looking Forward to October Looking Forward to October

zoom_out_map

October includes a few important themes in regard to our Health and Wellness.

October was first declared as National Bullying Prevention Month in 2006. Since then, October has been a time to acknowledge that bullying has devastating effects on children and families such as school avoidance, loss of self-esteem, increased anxiety, and depression. Bullying can occur in multiple ways. It can be verbal, physical, through social exclusion, or via digital sources like email, texts, or social media. Unlike mutual teasing or fighting, bullying occurs when one person or a group of people is perceived as being more powerful than another and takes advantage of that power through repeated physical assaults, threats of harm, intimidation, or by purposefully excluding a person from a valued social group. Being bullied can severely affect the person’s self-image, social interactions, and school performance and can lead to mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and substance use, and even suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

The Week of Respect runs from October 7th to the 11th. The Week of Respect is celebrated by all schools in New Jersey. The Clearview Regional School District observes this week by providing age-appropriate activities and instruction focused on character development and bullying prevention.

We will have a Spirit Week and hope all of our staff and students participate in the fun!
