Attendance Matters Attendance Matters

Missing a day of school here and there may not seem like much. But those days can add up quickly.

A student who misses about two days of school each month will miss roughly 20 days over the course of a school year. That's about a month of classroom instruction.

And it doesn't matter whether those absences are excused or unexcused when we're talking about lost learning time. When students aren't at school, they can miss new lessons, classroom discussions, hands-on activities and opportunities to practice skills with their teachers and classmates.

Whenever your student is healthy and able to attend, help them make being at school a priority.

You matter. Your learning matters. Your attendance matters.

Help Prepare Central for its Centennial Celebration Help Prepare Central for its Centennial Celebration

Central Elementary Volunteer Workday, September 19 from noon to 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help with Matt Mihelich’s Outdoor Classroom Memorial and the school garden. Graphic features raised garden beds, a wheelbarrow, shovel and gardening gloves.
zoom_out_map

Central Elementary is looking for volunteers to lend a hand September 19 from noon to 4 p.m. as work continues on Matt Mihelich’s Outdoor Classroom Memorial and the school garden is prepared for the upcoming Central Centennial Celebration.

Volunteers will help remove and stack sod and spread gravel for the Outdoor Classroom Memorial project. There will also be plenty to do in the school garden for anyone who would prefer not to dig, shovel or push a wheelbarrow.

Adults are encouraged to participate, especially community members who knew and loved Matt and would like to help complete another step in this special project. Older children who are able to work independently may attend with an adult.

When: September 19, noon–4 p.m.
Where: Central Elementary playground, Outdoor Classroom and School Garden

Thank you to everyone who has contributed time and effort to Matt’s memorial and Central’s school garden. Every helping hand will help get these special spaces ready as Central prepares to celebrate its centennial!

Skagit County to Host Annual Clothing Swap Event

The Skagit County Public Works Solid Waste Division will host their annual Skagit County Clothing Swap on Tuesday, September 29, from 3–6 p.m. at the Skagit County Fairgrounds, North Entrance, at 1410 Virginia St, Mount Vernon, WA 98273. The clothing swap will be in A&B Building.

A clothing swap is an exchange and giveaway of donated clothing. Participants are encouraged to bring in clean clothing to swap, donate, or take away. The Solid Waste Division recognizes the impacts of textile waste in the United States. Textiles are one of the fastest-growing waste streams in Washington, with over 400 million pounds buried in state landfills annually. To keep clothing out of landfills, these items can be reused and or repurposed. By participating in this event, you can help keep textiles out of landfills, reuse and repurpose clothing and textiles, and provide free clothing to residents of the county.

All clothing at the event is free and clothing donation is not required to participate. There is no limit on the amount of clothing a participant can take home. Each participant may donate a maximum of two large bags of clothing for the swap. No heavily stained items, underwear, or socks. No exceptions. All sizes, including children’s clothing, are welcome. There will be no designated changing rooms on site.

An additional clothing donation day will be offered on Saturday, September 19, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the recycling drop-off area at the Skagit County Transfer & Recycling Station located at 14104 Ovenell Rd, Mount Vernon, WA 98273. September 19 is a donation day only, not a swap. Staff will be on site at the Transfer Station to accept bags of clothing in preparation for the swap on September 29.

The event on September 29 will offer information about textile waste and best practices for reuse and recycling.

**Please note that most youth sports are run by volunteer boards of directors. Coaches are most often fellow parents and there is a significant referee shortage amongst almost every sport. Volunteering to coach or training to become a referee is one of the best opportunities a parent or guardian has to stay involved in their child's life through various stages of development!
