A Note From the Counselor

Reinforcing a Growth Mindset at Home

At school, students are learning about growth mindset—the belief that abilities grow with effort, practice, and learning from mistakes. Families play a powerful role in reinforcing this at home.

Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset

Fixed mindset sounds like:

  • “I’m just not good at this.”

  • “This is too hard.”

  • “I messed up, so I failed.”

Growth mindset sounds like:

  • “I’m not good at this yet.”

  • “This is hard, but I can keep trying.”

  • “Mistakes help me learn.”

How Parents Can Help at Home

  • Praise effort, not just results
Try: “You worked hard on that,” instead of focusing only on grades.

  • Normalize mistakes
Remind children that mistakes are part of learning—and share your own!

  • Use the word “yet”
“You can’t do this yet” keeps the focus on growth.

  • Encourage problem-solving
Ask: “What could you try next?” instead of giving the answer right away.

  • Model a growth mindset
Let children hear you say things like, “This is challenging, but I’ll keep practicing.”

Supporting a growth mindset helps children build confidence, resilience, and a love of learning—skills that last far beyond the classroom.
