Hello Eagles!

Welcome back - We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! As I reflected over Thanksgiving, one thing kept coming to mind - we are blessed at Canyon Ridge Middle School with amazing students, a spectacular hard-working faculty and a community of kind and supportive parents. We are thankful for your continued support of our Eagles!

This Friday (12/1) is our annual Volleybrawl event at 5pm in the main gym. Tickets are now for sale online to come see the volleyball team players take on the football players in a fundraiser volleyball match. And remember it is cash only for concessions.

Please note: The district landscape team has put down winter rye seed on the CRMS Fields this morning. Therefore all fields at CRMS (stadium and back practice fields) are CLOSED until December 11th. The track will still be open in the evenings and weekends. And students will still be given outdoor recess time at school, but we must stay on the track, basketball courts, courtyard, etc. and all stay off the fields so that they can hopefully grow healthy grass for the Spring.

Go Eagles!

Share your Culture - Holiday Tree

At Canyon Ridge Middle School, we want to highlight diversity and inclusion through the various cultures that are represented on our campus. We'd like to share information with our campus through two opportunities:

1. PTA will be decorating a holiday tree at CRMS and wants to include Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza and any other holidays that our CRMS families celebrate.

2. Various "Culture Blasts" spread throughout the year. "Culture Blasts" are short videos that highlight information about our diversity, inclusivity, and learning opportunities for the CRMS community.

We would appreciate your input on this short form to increase awareness and understanding of all aspects of your culture. Culture is much more than celebrations, languages, customs, food, dance, folklore, values, heritage, etc. It is everything! We invite you to share your culture. Thank you!

2024-25 Academic Calendar Feedback Requested

It’s the time of year when the district reviews the current academic calendar and finalizes the academic calendar for the 2024-2025 school year.

Our community’s insights are essential to ensuring we develop an academic calendar that best meets the needs of everyone in the district. There are two different formats for community members to provide feedback. Choose the one that works best for you, or participate in both. Our goal is to collect as much feedback as possible.

Option 1: Complete our Community Survey

The survey will open Monday, Nov. 27, and close at 8 a.m. Jan. 8, 2024

Option 2: Virtual Community Listening Sessions

*Please register here in advance of our 45-minute listening sessions. Zoom links will be sent out to the email submitted on the registration form on Monday, Nov. 27, for the registered session.

  • 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27

Mrs. Lindsey, 6th ELA Teacher

Mrs. Lindsey is one of our wonderful 6th grade ELA teachers and this is her second year with us at Canyon Ridge but she has been in education for 10 years. When asked about her favorite part about CRMS she said, “I work with some of the kindest, most hardworking people on the planet, and somehow, I always get the BEST kids put in my classroom. I love being an Eagle!” Her favorite unit this year is personal narratives. She loves hearing about students' life experiences, and writing about them allows for really interesting conversations in class. Her students worked extremely hard on their papers, and they even had a party celebrating their amazing accomplishments! Her advice to her students is that It's okay to fail. Try your hardest, and be kind to yourself in the process. We are all learning together! A not so secret fun fact about Mrs. Lindsey is her obsession with Reese's candy. Thanks to her students she might set a world record for the most amount of Reese's ever given to a teacher in the history of the world. That sounds like a delicious record!

Mrs. Vickers, 7th gr Math Teacher

Mrs. Vickers is one of our awesome 7th grade Math teachers. She has been in education for 10 years. Her favorite part about CRMS is the family feel between the staff, the students, and the parents. When asked what she was excited for this year in her class she said, “I love to do Pixel Art activities. It is fun for me to make them and I like to use them because students get immediate feedback on their answers to math questions and get to create a fun picture while doing it!” She wants her students to feel safe and empowered in her classroom. She reminds them that if you need help or need to talk to someone, you can always count on her. Fun fact about Mrs. Vickers, she loves to play ping pong.

Mr. West, 8th gr Math/Algebra Teacher

Mr. West is an amazing 8th grade Math and Algebra teacher at Canyon Ridge. He has 7 years of middle school math and Cross-Country/Track coaching in Oregon. He says the thing he loves the most about CRMS is how hard-working our students are here. He’s so grateful for the support and appreciation. He says “Having students say a genuine "thank you" after each class makes my day!” A bit of advice he would give his students; You do you. Do what you need to find success in whatever you're doing. Put in the work you need to put in. Others will need to put in a different amount of work than you. Everyone finishes assignments at different rates, learns at different rates, and develops skills at different rates. If you understand a new concept within minutes of being presented with it, awesome. If you understand a new concept after days of putting in hard work and practicing it, just as awesome. In his classes, he says that he does not expect perfection, but he does expect effort and perseverance through adversity. Some of the best learning experiences he says he’s had were through mistakes he made, and he feels that he is better now for making them AND learned from them. Mr. West was born and raised in Alaska, we hope he is adjusting well to this Texas heat because we are happy to have him here!

It is important that any student interested in applying for OCPE for the 24-25 school year look over these guidelines and become familiar with the changes.

Sports Equipment Donations needed!

Our students love our outdoor “recess” time after lunch each day but our basket of sports equipment is almost empty. If you have any sports equipment in your garage that you would like to clean out and donate, we will gladly accept footballs, volleyballs, soccer balls, kick balls and basketballs. It does not need to be new--we welcome used equipment that we can put to good use for all of our students. Please drop off your donations anytime during school hours in the front office. Thank you for helping to provide for this valuable outdoor time for our Eagles!

Attendance

Important Attendance Reminders:

  • Absence notes should be emailed to crmsattendance@leanderisd.org within 48 hours of the absence.

  • When you email the school, please include the student's first and last name and ID #. Student nicknames can cause confusion with attendance coding.

  • If you will be picking up your child from school early, please call the school (512-570-3500) ahead of time to let the Receptionist know. This allows our Receptionist time to get a pass written ahead of time and helps to move the process along more quickly.

  • The only people who will be permitted to pick up a child will be parents/guardians and those individuals listed as an emergency contact in your Home Access Center (HAC). Due to safety reasons, we are no longer allowing a parent to call in and give permission for someone to pick up your child during the school day other than those listed in HAC.

We do not allow early pick up after 4:00pm.

  • If you feel like there is an error for a particular class period, please email the teacher directly first. For example, if your student was tardy and the teacher accidentally already marked the student absence, email the teacher because the attendance office has to have it in writing from the teacher before attendance can update anything

  • There is a turn around time in updates if a student was with the nurse, AP, counselor, etc. It is not necessary to email the attendance office. Please remember that we have almost 1100 students so it will take 1-2 business days to show the update. We appreciate your patience and understanding that our team is working tirelessly to support all of our Eagles!

Bus updates from Transportation

The Leander ISD Transportation Department uses SMART Tag – a system that provides accurate, near real-time monitoring of where and when students load onto and unload off of their school bus – to help promote student safety and security, keeping parents, school administrators and the district’s transportation department more informed.

Returning bus riders are asked to continue to use the SMART Tag card they were issued last year. If they do not have a card, the student will punch in using their lunch number (student ID) when getting on and off the bus. Bus drivers will begin to issue cards in September for new bus riders.

The online parent portal allows parents and guardians to register to receive alerts for when the bus will arrive at their child’s stop; see a live map of their child’s bus; and view a riding history for their child. Be sure to register if you have never done so.

By Wednesday, Aug. 9, Leander ISD parents can enter their home address into Infofinder to look up their child’s bus route number, pick-up/drop-off times, and bus stop locations for the 2023–24 school year. Bus routes are subject to change, so LISD parents are strongly encouraged to confirm their child’s bus information again the week prior to the start of school.
