SCS Community Newsletter
September 3, 2026
Dear SCS Families, Caregivers, and Shelburne Community,
On Wednesday, our school practiced our first fire drill, without using the alarm. This teaching exercise focused on paying attention to adult directions and gathering at our meeting spots efficiently. Students brought their A-Game in terms of focus and cooperation: the drill was complete in under nine minutes, which is a record for our time as administrators at SCS. Nonetheless, walking to our evacuation zones outside the building led one kindergartner to share, “That fire dwill was so tireding!”
Much of our energy this week has gone toward proactive planning for the closure of Bay Road to through traffic beginning on Tuesday next week. Please review our SCS website for details regarding our response to the Bay Road closing.
Bus 2 will begin the morning run ten minutes earlier. Review the route times here.
Walk/bike to school - volunteers still needed. Please reach out if you can help support a safe transit to school. Even one morning a week helps!
Ride the bus if you can.
Carpool if you can. Every car makes a difference.
The safety of our students is the priority. All vehicles going in and out of SCS should yield to pedestrians and to all buses. This is particularly important for buses turning right out of the school driveway. They can’t make that turn unless oncoming traffic on Harbor Road stops before the crosswalk to school. We are anticipating congestion and delays to our typical school day both at dropoff and dismissal, and we will respond with additional modifications, as needed.
We look forward to seeing all students on Tuesday, September 8th. There is no school Friday or Monday. As we head into the long weekend, we want to wish all of our students, staff, families and community a very happy, restful, and safe Labor Day.
In Partnership,
Brett, Jen, and Tania

SCS BAND ANNOUNCEMENT
SCS Band beginners are signed up and ready to get their instruments! All parents/caregivers were emailed a personalized confirmation and this enrollment information.
Beginning Band Night is Tuesday, 9/8 at 6:30 in the SCS cafeteria. All are welcome, but ideally a parent/caregiver for each child attends (and takes possession of the rental or borrowed instrument).
If someone cannot be there, or if you have any questions, please let Tim Buckingham know!
As an athlete and musician myself, I encourage all students who like to sing to participate in the choir and/or band program! Our choral program is integrated into our curriculum and scheduled within the school day, creating access to a whole lot of fun with friends, building skills as a collaborative member of an ensemble, sharing with the greater community and finding a place to use your voice to express yourself. No experience necessary - everyone is welcome to join!
Sign up using the Google form link highlighted in yellow on the front of the SCS Choir Handbook! If you have any questions or trouble signing up, please email at lmarino@cvsdvt.org, or your student can come in to rehearsal or talk with me anytime.
Here is a peek at our rotating band/chorus schedule for those students who would like to sing and play an instrument.
Signups for the Choral Program will close on September 11, 2026
We are looking forward to a great year ahead!

Mentor training and continual support provided by CVSD mentor coordinators.
Mentoring pairs have access to dedicated spaces to play basketball and other sports, cook, craft, enjoy board and card games and develop a friendship.

Nearby Nature
Nearby Nature is seeking new volunteers for the 2026-2027 school year! This wonderful program brings place-based natural science lessons into our K-2 classrooms. Students will engage in hands-on inquiry while learning about this year’s theme, Earth—Exploring Our Physical World. Each month volunteers attend a training, do a bit of lesson prep, and lead a lesson alongside other volunteers. It’s a great way to be part of your child’s classroom community, explore the world around us, and have fun together.
No experience in science or teaching is necessary, and scheduling is flexible. For more information or to sign up please email wendy.eberhart@gmail.com. You can also read about the program at https://nearbynature.fwni.org.
