New Berlin Key Club Donates ImpactLife Grant to West Sangamon Public Library After Successful Blood Drive

The New Berlin High School Key Club turned compassion into action this spring, presenting a $287 grant to the West Sangamon Public Library following a successful blood drive held on March 11th. The grant was awarded to the club by ImpactLife, the regional blood center, as part of their LifeSavings Grant program, which recognizes schools and organizations for hosting lifesaving donation events.

The March 11th drive, organized by the Key Club and hosted at New Berlin High School, saw the community come together in impressive numbers. A total of 36 units of blood were collected — 32 whole blood donations and 4 double red cell donations — with 24 individuals making their very first donation. These contributions have the potential to save up to 100 lives, a remarkable impact made possible by the generosity of donors and the hard work of student organizers.

In the spirit of giving back locally, the Key Club chose to direct the grant funds to the West Sangamon Public Library. The donation will help support the library’s programs and services, furthering its mission to serve as an educational and community hub for residents of the area.

Key Club advisor Casey Spears expressed his pride in the students’ efforts, saying, “It’s incredible to see so many New Berlin students step up and roll up their sleeves — literally — to help others. Their willingness to donate and make a real difference in the lives of people they may never meet shows the heart and character of this community.”

The New Berlin Key Club’s dedication to service and community leadership continues to make a positive mark, proving that even small towns can make a big difference — one donation at a time.

Mock Wreck Re-Enactment

New Berlin High School students participated in a mock wreck reenactment on April 23rd. NBHS SADD students, along with sponsor Ms. Hemmerle, created the script, volunteered as participants, and made the event as realistic as possible.

During the reenactment, emergency personnel were summoned after a 911 call was simulated by Carter Clair.

We would like to give a shout out to those involved in planning and implementing the event: New Berlin High School staff and SADD Chapter students, New Berlin Police and Fire Departments, Illinois State

Police, Sangamon County Sheriff’s department, Saints Flight, Taylor Towing, Butler Funeral Home, Audio Techni Services and SIU School of Medicine ThinkFirst program.

Students heard from guest speaker Tony Hofmann and his mother, Tammy on their real-life expereince from being a victim in an impaired driving accident and the road to recovery that follows.

What is 211?

With approximately 1.5 million nonprofit organizations in the United States plus scores of

government agencies, finding help can be confusing and intimidating. People who need help

often do not know where to begin.

211 call centers are staffed by trained specialists who quickly assess the callers’ needs and

refer them to the help they seek. It’s simple to remember, accessible to everyone, toll-free,

available 24/7, with multilingual capabilities.

211 in Sangamon and Menard County is funded by United Way of Central Illinois. By bringing

this service to the community, especially at a time when more individuals and families need
