CES Weekly Communicator
Issue #26: February 23, 2024
Principal Corner
Happy Friday, Chapelfield Families!
Today was our 3rd learning community that we call PACKS! We read the book that is our theme for the year, All are Welcome. Students were asked to make a picture of themselves with tips from our art teacher, Mrs. Karr. In addition, we have been working hard on reading our One School, One Book entitled Life According to Og the Frog. Chapter 4 focuses on feeling like we belong and ties in nicely to our learning community theme. Please take a moment to read over that section of the newsletter. Teachers recorded videos of themselves reading it! Even my son, Nate, makes an appearance. We are SHINING bright and building our sense of belonging as a Chapelfield family. Take a few moments this weekend to talk about those 2 big events with your child/ren.
I hope to see many of you tonight at the Girls Gala! Next weekend, is our Boys Bash!
Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Nikki Miller
NWEA MAP Reports
Dear GJPS Families,
GJPS students recently participated in the winter administration of the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) reading and math assessments. The winter administration is a check-point to see how students are progressing with their learning.
Our staff has been reviewing the data gathered through the MAP assessments and are looking forward to using it in the classroom to help guide instruction. Your child’s Winter Family Report is included with this letter. When looking at your student’s reports, the RIT score indicates overall academic achievement in reading and mathematics. The RIT percentile describes how your student scores compare to other students in the same grade nationally. As more test administrations are completed, reports will begin to show multiple data points that indicate the learning trajectory for your student as measured by MAP assessments.
Families may access the Family Guide to MAP which provides a great summary of the MAP assessment and a general explanation of the results. Translated versions of the guide can be found here. The MAP Family Toolkit is another resource that provides information, videos and additional family resources for the MAP suite of assessments.
As with all other assessment data, it is important to remember the MAP assessment is only one measure that we use to determine your child’s strengths and instructional needs. If you have any questions regarding this assessment or your student’s results, please contact your child’s teacher or building administrator.
Sincerely,
Tia Holliman

One School, One Book: Life According to Og the Frog
Hello Families!
This week we had a kickoff for this year’s One School One Book! Students met Og the Frog and received a bag with a copy of the book, Life According to Og the Frog. Thank you to the PTO for purchasing books for every student!! In the bag you will find the following papers:
Welcome Letter explaining One School One Book
Calendar of what chapter to read each day
Questions to answer after each chapter
Each night your child should read the assigned chapter and answer the question that goes with it. This is intended to be a family reading experience, and many of our students will need support in reading the book or having it read to them. There are videos of each chapter being read by staff members of Chapelfield if you would like your child to use those. You can access these videos on the One School One Book website.
Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
Hoppy Reading!

OELPA TESTING
Next week begins the OELPA testing window
Students in our English Learner (EL) program will take the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) in February. The OELPA is a required test for English Learners in the state of Ohio. There are four parts to the test: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. This will help us know how your child is growing with their English language skills.
Your student does not need to do anything to get ready for the OELPA. What we are doing in school will help them prepare for this test.
We will receive the test results in May. A family report will be emailed to you by the end of June. Translated reports can be mailed home to families who ask for them.
The test scores are used to help us plan your student's English Learner services for the 2024-25 school year. Students who score “Proficient” on this text will exit the EL Program.
If you have questions about this test, please contact Mrs. Melville at melvillm@gjps.org.
