On Friday October 9, 2026 the Ringle Fire Department will be here. Students will learn what to do if a fire ever was to occur. They will get to see the fire trucks, learn how to hold a firehose, and see what kind of protective equipment that fire fighters need to wear. They also get to learn about smoke alarms, how smoke rises, and the importance of fire escape plans.

We appreciate the willingness of the Ringle Fire Department to take the time from their daytime jobs to provide this experience for our students.

Students have been very busy creating in the art classroom- from using lines to create vehicles, flowers, or roller coasters, to learning about different styles of art, students have made amazing artwork! One way to keep up to date with what students have created is to connect to your student through Artsonia. Artsonia is a free to use app that allows students to build an online gallery that shows students how much they have grown in art, and guardians can see and share their art with friends or family near and far. If you have not connected to your student yet, please do so by either clicking this link: https://www.artsonia.com/connect/Y3K47PRW or scanning the QR code. Please know that if you connect this way, you will need to use the name your student was registered at school with instead of any short names or nick names. Please let me know if you have any questions!

We know that it is only October but before we know it there will be snow falling from the sky and children excited to build snow people and forts. Below is the temperature guide that is used to ensure that students are dressed appropriately for recess. Please note that snow pants, boots, hats, gloves/mittens and jackets are required of all K-5 students from the first snowfall until all snow is gone from our playground area. Students without these items will not be released outside to play. If your child is in need of these items please consider looking for them now a they tend to disappear quickly from stores. If your family needs assistance obtaining these items please reach out to your child's teacher, Mrs. Tatro (school counselor), or Mrs. Welsh (school social worker) to connect you with community resources.

WIN groups will be starting WIN groups will be starting

On October 6th Riverside will be starting our 30 minute WIN groups (What I Need). Every day we have time in our schedule dedicated to providing students with a variety of instructional offerings to support their individual needs. This time may be used to provide intervention or enrichment opportunities in the areas of reading, math, social skills, speech, language development and specially designed instructional minutes. Teachers and specialists collaborate to help determine student placement in groups to best meet their individual needs. In the week of Oct. 6th the teacher or specialists that will be working with your child will be reaching out to you by email to let you know the group your child will be in for our first WIN session. Riverside WIN blocks are traditionally 6-9 weeks long.

12 Tips to Reduce Your Child’s Stress & Anxiety

Testing time and the busy holiday season are around the corner. Anxiety symptoms are common in children and adolescents, with 10-20% of school-aged children experiencing anxiety symptoms. An even larger number of children experience stress that does not qualify as an anxiety disorder. So, how can you help to reduce your child’s anxiety and stress?

  1. Encourage your child to face his/her fears, not run away from them.

  2. Tell your child it is OK to be imperfect and make mistakes.

  3. Focus on the positives.

  4. Schedule relaxing activities.

  5. Model approach behavior, self-care and positive thinking.

  6. Reward your child’s brave behaviors.

  7. Encourage good sleep hygiene.

  8. Encourage your child to express his/her worry or anxiety.

  9. Help your child to problem solve.

  10. Stay calm.

  11. Practice relaxation exercises with your child.

  12. Never give up!

Holiday Assistance

As the holidays approach, please remember that we are here as a resource if you need assistance. Each year, several organizations offer help to DCE/Riverside families that are in need. Please do not hesitate to let either your child’s teacher, me, or our School Social Worker know if you are in a situation where you would benefit from assistance. I want to assure you that this is a very discreet, confidential process. Since hardships happen year round and not just at the holidays, remember that we are here to help any time. We have several resources that can assist with clothing (winter wear included), food and more. We care for ALL of our students and families here at Riverside and we would like to be able to help you find ways to meet your needs. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are glad to help!

Supporting Child-Well Being Through Healthy Screen Time

The U.S. Surgeon General issued a new advisory about the effects of social media use on youth mental health in June 2023. Below are some talking points and content about the use of social media for your children.

“Social media has both positive and negative impacts on the lives of children and adolescents.”

“The more time kids spend on screens, the less time they have for healthy sleep habits, physical activity, and time outdoors, all of which improve well-being.” The Wisconsin Office of Children’s Mental Health recommends starting children with a basic cell phone – not a smartphone.
