Ms. Hanson's Notes
Here we are at the end of the school year? Tomorrow we have field day and hopefully, you are able to come by and experience all the fun! Next week includes class celebrations, F.AVE Finale and the Last Day Dances.
Parents, if you are able to spend field day with us, please check in at the front desk with Ms. Morrow before reporting to your stations. Be aware that parking is limited, so if you can walk, you might want to choose that option. If you park along Oakview, you will need to be able to move your car no later than about 1:30. Thank you so much, and we can't wait to see you tomorrow!
FIELD DAY is upon us! Most of our Field Day volunteer slots have been filled for this Fun Disney-filled Day on the Ave! But occasionally volunteers drop out last minute so slots might open up!

Also, does anyone have a pop-up canopy tent that we could borrow for Field Day to provide shade for our volunteers on the upper field? If so, please contact Coach Hallman at: thallman@csdecatur.net
Thanks FAVE Falcons!
F.AVE Student Council welcomed State Representative Omari Crawford to Fifth Ave. on Monday, May 12. Student Council Representatives introduced Rep. Crawford to the group. Rep. Crawford shared all about his experiences as a state lawmaker, how bills become laws, and characteristics that make strong leaders. Thanks for visiting our school and serving our community, Rep. Crawford!

Lost Library Books
Please check your child's communication folder and your email to see if they have any outstanding books from the F.AVE library. It is very important that students leave the building on May 23 with settled library accounts. Students can also check their accounts in their Destiny accounts using Launchpad.
If your child has lost a library book, please send in payment as soon as possible. You may pay by cash or checks payable to Fifth Avenue. All 5th grade F.AVE library fines will be entered into the Infinite Campus Parent Portal after May 23. Please note that if you find a book after payment has been made, we are unable to process refunds. You may either keep the book or donate the fine to the library.
If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Smith at cosmith@csdecatur.net.
Summer Reading
Keep your child reading all summer by using our F.AVE Summer Reading website as a resource! You can find information about:
- summer reading challenges for children and adults
- using the SORA ebooks library, both CSD and Dekalb Public Library
- reading lists and recommendations
- news sites for kids
- much more...
Each rising F.AVE student has set their own personal goals for their summer reading activity. Ask your child about their goal and set a few of your own! Stop the summer slide by reading together as a family.
Last Day of School Dance
You're invited to FAVE's Last Day of School Dance!! We'd love for parents to join us as we celebrate another successful year around the FAVE sun! Volunteer here.
There are two ways to help:
- Lead a Dance: If you're a BRAVE soul who likes to dance, this is for you! We'd like to invite you to lead a simple choreographed dance for your child's grade level. You'll tell us the (school appropriate) song, plan a simple dance, and take the stage! Students had a blast with parent dancers at last year's school dance. Let's see your moves, parents!
- General Crowd Control: Help us work the door for students who may need a noise break or bathroom break, monitor the floor to stop runners or out of control dance moves, or encourage general fun and safety!
Please click the link to sign up. If you choose to lead a dance, please list the song in the comments.
Thank you!
- 3rd Grade: 12:15 - 12:45
- 4th Grade 12:50 - 1:20
- 5th Grade 1:30 - 2:00
Rising 6th Grade Cross Country Information
Is your RISING 6TH GRADER interested in trying out for Cross Country in the Fall, 2005?
If so, please join Coach Frazier and Coach Rabold on a google meet Monday, May 19th at 6:30 pm.

F.AVE Game Hawker Podcast S2, Ep 24
It's our last podcast ever! I was pleasantly surprised to realize that we came full circle with this week's podcast. Our very first one last school year was about Kate DiCamillo's The Magician's Elephant, and our last one also celebrates a Kate DiCamillo book. 3rd graders Eva and Grace discuss The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. If you are a Velveteen Rabbit fan, tune in to hear about this book that teaches us what it means to love and be loved. Click the picture below to listen!

District News
CSD Nonresident Tuition Applications are Open Now
Applications for nonresident tuition for the 2025-2026 school year are open now through May 15. Nonresident tuition seats are being offered in the K-2 and 3-5 schools for grades with available space. A lottery selection process will be used to enroll nonresident tuition applicants, and a waitlist will be created if necessary. The annual tuition rate for nonresident students for the 2025-2026 school year is $7,883. Visit the district's nonresident tuition webpage for information on how to access and complete the nonresident tuition application.
Enrollment forecasts will help determine the different number of tuition-based seats available for each grade and school, which are subject to change. As a public school district, CSD remains tuition-free for students residing within the city limits of the City of Decatur. Tuition is based on a state formula and is calculated each year based on the average educational cost of a student minus funds that are received from the state.
Action Required: Important End-of-Year School Clinic Reminders
Please ensure you complete the following steps by the end of this school year in preparation for the next. All health forms are on the CSD website.
Pick Up Medication: Please remember to pick up your child's medication from the school clinic by the last day of school. Medications cannot be stored over the summer and will be discarded if not collected. Students are not allowed to take medication home themselves. If you cannot pick up the medication, please email the school nurse to make alternative arrangements before the school year ends.
Update Healthcare Plans: Update your student's health forms by the start of the next school year. Students with a medical condition (e.g., asthma, seizures, diabetes, food allergies) must have a new healthcare plan, signed and dated by both their parent/guardian and physician, at the start of the new school year.
Authorize Medication at School: An Authorization of Medication Administration Form is required for each medication administered at school. Parents/guardians must drop off all medications at the clinic. Over-the-counter medications must be unopened and require a parent/guardian signature. OTC medications also require a prescriber's signature if the dosage exceeds guidelines. Prescription medications require a prescriber's signature.
Authorize Self-Carry Medications: For students authorized to self-carry emergency medications (such as an inhaler, epinephrine auto-injector, or insulin/diabetic supplies), their physician must indicate this on the Care Plan and the Authorization for Student to Carry Medication form, confirming the student's ability to self-administer. This form requires signatures from the physician, student, and parent.
CSD's School Health team appreciates your attention to these important health matters and thanks you for the privilege of caring for your children.
Register Students for 2025-2026 Transportation
Transportation registration is required for all students who intend to ride the bus. Families may register a student for transportation for the 2025-2026 school year by selecting the appropriate link below:
Bus Registration – Same School: For students who will remain at their current school next year.
Bus Registration – New School Transition: For students who will transition to a new school next year (for example, entering kindergarten, 3rd grade, 6th grade, or 9th grade).
Completing this form helps us accurately plan bus routes and ensure your student is assigned transportation based on their school placement for the upcoming yea
Extra Mile Awards
Students: Do you know a teacher or CSD employee who has gone "the extra mile" this year? Nominate them for the CSD Extra Mile Award! The Extra Mile Award is an annual award that allows students to show appreciation for the teachers or staff they feel go above and beyond what is expected of them.
Students at any grade level can write an essay describing how their teacher (or staff member) goes the extra mile (parents can help younger children write the essay or submit it on behalf of a student who is unable to write the nomination). The essays should be detailed and describe how the employee goes above and beyond.
Click here to submit a nomination by May 22, 2025. These awards will be presented at the CSD Opening Day Celebration in July.
