RICE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT - PARENT LETTER REGARDING NO MEASLES IN OUR SCHOOL
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We want to let you know about the measles outbreak happening in Kansas. Right now, there are no cases of measles in our school. We are sharing this information to keep you informed and let you know we are ready to respond if needed.
What is measles?
Measles is a virus that spreads easily when people talk, cough, or sneeze. Measles spreads easily in places like schools.
· Symptoms: Measles usually starts with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes. A rash appears a few days later. It usually starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.
· Spreading measles: People with measles can spread the virus to others from four days before the rash starts to four days after the rash appears. The measles virus is highly contagious and can stay in the air for two hours after an infected person leaves the space. Most people who are not protected will get measles if they are around someone who has it.
· Vaccine: The best protection against measles is two doses of the MMR vaccine. Children who get two doses are protected. However, a small number (according to CDC about three out of 100) may still get measles if they are near someone who is sick.
What happens if measles is found at USD 376?
· We will work with the Rice County Health Department to tell families if their child may have been exposed.
· If your child is not fully vaccinated and is exposed, they will need to stay away from school for 21 days from their last exposure to measles, as required by public health regulations[1].
· The health department will help families know when their child can return to school safely.
Where can I find more information about measles?
· Visit the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s measles webpage: www.kdhe.ks.gov/measles. You can find answers to common questions and learn how to check your child’s vaccine record.
· Contact the Rice County Health Department at (620) 257-2171 or your family healthcare provider if you have questions about measles.
· If your child is not vaccinated, the health department or your healthcare provider can talk with you about getting the vaccine. This will help protect your child from measles and enable them to stay in school if they are exposed.
If your child is sick or you are worried about their health, please call your health care provider. We know this news may be concerning. Our goal is to keep everyone safe by sharing important information as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Danielle Mitchell, MPH Logan Shetlar, MD
