Skyland News
Skyland Families,
What a great day to celebrate our Skyland All-Stars! We held our First Nine Weeks Honors Day today, and it was wonderful to see so many families cheering on our students. Thank you for taking the time to celebrate their achievements with us. We’re proud of the hard work and growth we’ve seen this year.
Progress reports also went home today. Please take a few minutes this weekend to look over your child’s report together. Ask what they’re proud of and what they’d like to improve. Celebrate the progress you see, then help them choose one goal and one small step they can take toward it next week.
We have another chance to cheer on our students tomorrow at the Stampede Bowl! Our students have been working hard in the classroom, and our Skyland Cheer Squad and Skyland Flag Football Team have been practicing for weeks. Please come out at 10:45 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, November 7, and help us cheer on TEAM SKYLAND! More information is listed below.
Looking ahead, schools will be closed on Wednesday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day. Thank you to the veterans in our Skyland community and beyond for your service.
Have a wonderful weekend, and we hope to see you at the Stampede Bowl!

i-Ready
A little i-Ready practice throughout the week can help your child build confidence with the skills they’re working on in reading or math. For each subject assigned to your child, aim for two passed lessons per week. Setting aside 30–45 minutes per subject over the course of the week can help your child stay on track.
Encourage your child to take their time and work through each lesson independently. When they finish, ask them to show you a lesson they passed or explain one thing they learned. It’s a quick way to see their progress and celebrate their effort!

Beat Auburn, Beat Hunger!
Beat Hunger, Beat Auburn!
October 1 – November 19
Skyland Elementary is excited to participate in Beat Hunger, Beat Auburn, an annual food drive that helps support the Alabama Food Bank and families in need throughout our community.
This year, we are bringing our House System into the competition! Students and families are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items throughout the collection period. Every item donated will help your student’s House move closer to victory.
The House that collects the MOST non-perishable items will win a PIZZA PARTY hosted by our School Counselor.

🟡 Yellow House
🔵 Blue House
🟢 Green House
Which House will take the win?
Let’s work together to Beat Hunger, Beat Auburn and make a difference in the lives of others!
Thank you, Skyland families, for helping us give back to our community
Arrival & Dismissal
Arrival & Dismissal Reminders
Arrival: Morning drop-off begins at 7:30 a.m. using one car lane. Please do not drop students off before 7:30 a.m., as adult supervision is not available before that time.
Dismissal: Pre-K dismisses at 2:30 p.m. using the lane closest to the school. Please do not use this lane until after 2:40 p.m. Grades K–5 dismiss at 2:40 p.m.
For the safety of our students, please do not pass other vehicles during arrival or dismissal. Passing creates an unnecessary safety concern for students, families, and staff. During dismissal, please pull all the way forward before stopping to load your child. This helps us keep the car line moving safely and efficiently for everyone.
Please do not use the back parking area for arrival or dismissal.
Thank you for helping us keep our Skyland All-Stars safe!
Skyland All-Stars at the ACTM Conference
A big Skyland shout-out to our math coach, Mrs. Boyd, 3rd grade teacher Ms. Lark, and 4th grade teacher Mrs. Ball for representing Skyland Elementary at the Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ACTM) conference! Thank you for taking time to learn alongside other educators and bring back fresh ideas to help our students build confidence and grow as mathematicians. We appreciate all you do for our Skyland All-Stars!
Attendance Matters
Every school day is an opportunity for your child to learn, grow, and succeed. Regular attendance is one of the strongest predictors of academic success, and we encourage every family to make school attendance a priority. We understand that illnesses and emergencies happen, but whenever possible, please ensure your child is at school, on time, and ready to learn.
Tuscaloosa City Schools' attendance policy requires students to attend school regularly. Parents must submit a written excuse within three (3) school days after a student's return from an absence. Parent notes may be used for up to five (5) absences during the school year. After five parent notes have been used, any additional absences must be supported by a physician's note or court documentation to be considered excused. Excessive unexcused absences may result in truancy intervention as outlined in the TCS Code of Conduct.
ParentSquare: TCS gets a new Communication App
This school year, Tuscaloosa City Schools will continue using ParentSquare as our primary communication platform. This free, easy-to-use app helps simplify communication between families, schools, and the district by providing important updates, school events, and emergency alerts all in one place.
All TCS parents, faculty, and staff are encouraged to download the ParentSquare app and stay connected throughout the school year.
