MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Fowler Family,

We hope you found some fun and maybe even some sun over the past week! We look forward to finishing the quarter strong and it is hard to believe we are just two weeks away from the end of our third quarter.

I would like to thank the TTSD Foundation for Tigard and Tualatin Schools along with the Arts in the Burbs who have graciously awarded Fowler Middle School with a class set of ukuleles for our music program, a new follow spot (spotlight) for our drama program, and a $500 dollar contribution towards pottery wheels in our ceramics program. The generous $3,100 grants will impact hundreds of students per year both now and in the future.

You will also want to know that we have revised our cell phone and electronics policy. The new policy will begin to take effect April 17th with a soft start. We will share the updates with students prior to implementation, but want parents to all have a heads up. The official communication for this change is attached here and goes into more detail and with more context, but in short we will ask students to have phones off and away from the time they enter the building until the time they leave the building each day.

We are also starting our forecasting for current 6th and 7th graders, so please connect with your child as they begin bringing home information. More on this topic below.

Have a fantastic week,

Andy

It’s time to sort through the Lost & Found in preparation for it to be cleared out. Please encourage your student to check the lost and found before April 12. Lost and found will be taken away after that. We have many, many items: coats, jackets, shoes, lunch boxes, water bottles, clothing, umbrellas and more. If parents would like to come in and look, we will ask you to sign in as a visitor and you may go peruse the pile. We ask that you do not come between 10:30am-1:00pm; this spans our lunches and it is already busy.

Mark your calendars: April 26th there WILL be school. Though originally a teacher workday, this will now be the student make-up day for the snow cancellation in February. This will be a regular late-start (Wednesday schedule) school day for all students and staff. The school calendar has been updated to reflect this change.

Applications for AVID next year are now open! Please encourage your 6th or 7th grader to apply for this year-long elective. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is rooted in the belief that all students can succeed if they have the desire, tools, and opportunity to do so. In middle school, AVID is designed to help students prepare for and succeed in high school and college. Students in AVID learn skills such as organization, public speaking, self-advocacy, note-taking, study skills, higher level questioning, and much more. Students also go on field trips to different colleges and vocational schools in the state, and volunteer in the community.

Current 6th & 7th graders will forecast for elective classes (for next year) this week. Counselors will visit Science classes Monday & Tuesday to review the forecasting process and elective options. Parents/guardians, be on the lookout for the forecasting form and talk to your students about what options would be a good fit for them. We do ask for a parent/guardian signature on the form. 6th grade forms are due back Thursday, April 6, and 7th grade forms are due back Wednesday, April 5.
