ELEMENTARY

NISD GiftedReferral TimelineELEMENTARY

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Thank you for expressing interest in referring your child(ren) for gifted services. Please review this entire document before going to the online referral form.

Please note these pieces of information:

  • The referral window is open January 19 - March 24.

  • These assessments are designed to determine if a student has advanced instructional needs that warrant gifted services. Using preparatory materials or resources prior to testing may invalidate the results and the child would not be eligible for services.

  • Please check back often as we update information as needed.

WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR TESTING AND RESULTS?

  • The referral window closes at 11:59 PM on Wednesday, March 24. The link will not work after that time

  • Testing will occur on your child's campus.

  • Kinder and 1st grade testing is April 1 - 16.

  • 2nd - 5th grade testing is April 19 - 30.

  • Campus committees will meet upon finishing the testing process to discuss the educational needs of each student tested in May. Parents/guardians will be notified of results once committee meetings have been held.

  • Services will begin the following school year.

  • Caregivers will have the opportunity to schedule a conference with the campus if there are additional questions/concerns.

WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR KINDERGARTEN TESTING AND RESULTS?

  • April 1 - 16: Testing on home campus.
  • Mid-May: Placement decision letters will be sent home once testing is completed on your child’s campus.

  • Pullout services begin in 1st grade.

WHEN CAN I APPEAL THE "DOES NOT QUALIFY" PLACEMENT DECISION FOR GRADES 1-5?

Your student was tested for gifted services, but did not qualify. You have questions, like "How can I really understand what this data means?" and "What are the other academic opportunities for my child?" Schedule a conference with the GT Specialist at your student's campus.

A student/parent who wishes to appeal the campus decision regarding selection for or removal from the gifted program must complete this form and submit it to the campus principal prior to the campus-level appeal. All appeals must be processed in accordance with Board policy EHBB (LOCAL).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. What happens if my child is absent on the day of testing? We will schedule makeup testing as time is available.

  2. Does my child need to be retested if s/he is already receiving services? Your child does not need to be retested once s/he has qualified for services; however, we do retest in 2nd for updated scores. Regardless of the scores, students are not removed from services.

  3. My child did not qualify last time s/he was tested. Can s/he be tested again? Yes, students have annual opportunities to be referred for gifted services. In deciding if you should refer your child multiple times, consider the child's instructional needs and his/her response to potentially testing and not qualifying. Sometimes students internalize this as a failure because they do not understand the nature of this kind of assessment and process.
