From Mr. Clemente

Dear Winter Park Band families,

What a fun-filled week for the Band program last week! Thank you to everyone involved in getting the Band where we needed to be - from chaperoning the parade to staying up late with us for post game to all the Homecoming festivities!

Wednesday's Homecoming Parade & "Roar" performances were both great, and we dodged just enough rain drops to get everything in! SOTW did a great job in the parade and brought the spirit to the pep rally afterwards. Thanks to everyone on Bus 2 for being flexible through the stall out!

Friday's Homecoming Football Game was also an awesome night with beautiful weather. Congratulations to the SOTW on their performance - the Alumni Band was certainly proud! We're excited to continue to refine and improve the performance over the last 4 weeks of this year's SOTW. Thank you to all the WPHS Band Alumni who returned for the game. It was so much fun to see them both visit their past band mates who are still in band and to have them play with us in the stands. Looking forward to next year!

A couple highlights from me for the week ahead:

  • The Wind Symphony students who make up the Orchestra Winds and Percussion will join the WPHS Orchestra students to perform at the Fall Orchestra Concert at Edgewater HS on Thursday, 10/9. Have a great performance!
  • Friday evening's performance will take place at Boone HS which also is our performance site for Marching MPA in a few weeks. It's a great chance to have a dry run, get the lay of the land, and be able to perform in that stadium as a prep performance.
  • This coming Saturday, Jazz Ensemble I will give their first performance of the year at the Winter Park Autumn Art Festival. JEI performs on Saturday morning at 10 AM on the stage in Central Park, Downtown Winter Park. The WPAAF is free and open to the public, so please come to the park, bring a lawn chair or blanket, and enjoy some breakfast/brunch with jazz, and then stay to see the UCF Flying Horse Big Band at 12 PM on the same stage.
  • Student who signed up for the "Marching Chiefs Experience" on the morning of October 18 and their families should consult the itinerary on the Band website.
  • Last, but certainly not least, please read all the thank-yous and important updates from our Band Booster Board below in this newsletter. Thank you Band Booster Board for your time and dedication to the Band program!!

Looking ahead at our Band calendar:

  • On Saturday, October 18 we will join up with our friends in the bands from Freedom HS, Apopka HS, Horizon HS, Ocoee HS, Dr. Phillips HS, and West Orange HS at WOHS for the annual West Side Showcase. This is by far one of my favorite events of the whole school year. For those who haven't been to the Showcase before, it is a non-competitive, no rating, super supportive pre-MPA style event. We will bring in a few FBA trained adjudicator’s whose sole purpose will be to provide feedback on ways to improve our shows going into Marching MPA. Each band will get to perform for all the other bands and then have a short clinic time with wind, percussion and guard adjudicators on the field after their show. SOTW performs Spanish Images at 6:45 PM, and a complete itinerary is available on the Band website. Special this year The West Side Showcase will conclude with a performance by the FSU Marching Chiefs!

  • Our journey with Spanish Images is Marching Band MPA on Saturday, November 1 at Boone HS. This performance culminates the students' hard work and journey creating this show from Band Camp until now. This is another one of my favorite days of the school year, and I can't wait to see where the show ends up for this performance! Performance time and itinerary TBA.

Let's make it a great week!

Mr. Clemente

From our Band Booster President

Band Families,

Please remind your students (and students remind your friends) that it is important to eat good meals and stay hydrated, especially on practice and game days. There have been several times that volunteers have heard that students have not eaten or hydrated sufficiently. Parents, please check with your student to make sure they are eating during the day, and if they do not care for the school lunch, figure out what alternate option works for your family. Students, please remember that Marching Band is a physically taxing activity and you should be taking care of your body's needs just as carefully as if you were the ones playing football.

This week we have an away game on Friday at Boone HS and students should remember their long socks, show shirts, gloves, and spandex shorts.

Save the date 10/28 for Trunk or Treat! After practice parents and families are encouraged to decorate their cars while the students trick or treat along the rows.

From our Fundraising Chair

Hello Band Families!

Spirit WEEK next week at Chick-fil-A!

Next week the newly renovated Chick-fil-A on University Blvd & Forsyth Rd is hosting a Spirit WEEK! Plan to bring a herd of family and friends to raise some moolah for the band! Tell your neighbors and post the event on your neighborhood apps, too.

Here are the important details:

When: Oct 6th-11th (Monday-Saturday) open to close

Where: Chick-fil-A 3391 University Blvd (by Costco). This location ONLY.

How it works: The band receives 15% back of all sales. For the most accurate counting of receipts, it is recommended to use their app for online and in-store/drive-thru orders, which you can download here. You MUST choose the correct location (University at Forsyth) and put in our code towards the end of the purchase process. The code is WPHSB25. Without this code in the app, we will not get credit for the sale.

If you're not using the app, to receive credit, you MUST mention the WP band to the employee and make sure "WP Band" is written on the receipt and given to an employee at the register. The receipts are collected in a box and tallied at the end of the week. Of course, the app is fool-proof.

It will be great to see you all there throughout the week! Plan times to go with other students and families so we show up in force for fun, food and fundraising! Students, share with your sections. Can't wait to see all of our awesome families out there throughout the week!

Go Cats!

Private Lessons - Invest in Your Future!

Whether a student is learning a musical instrument to pursue a career in music, or simply for personal musical fulfillment and recreation, private lessons are one of the best investments that a parent can provide for their musical child. When working with a private teacher, students receive one-on-one instruction from a professional musician who specializes on that instrument.

Unlike a full band rehearsal experience, studying with a private teacher focuses in on the student’s individual needs. Students who study privately once a week from a professional musician are usually those who excel and find Band more enjoyable. These students frequently earn positions in honor groups like All-State and All-County, and make entry into our more advanced bands like Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensemble I. Some even go on to earn college scholarships, even if they are not majoring in music!

Below is a link to a list of local private teachers. This list is not exhaustive, and there may be other individuals who are not on the list. If you are a private teacher who would like to be added to our list (or deleted), or know a private teacher who should be added, please contact Mr. Clemente at michael.clemente@ocps.net.
