Cole Miners' Dig

Principal's Notes
We've waited a long time for this glorious weather and we found many ways to enjoy it this week! The 1st graders hosted Community Meeting on Monday with a focus on the theme of courage and Memorial Day. Thanks to the PTO, the 3rd graders enjoyed a field trip to the Jacobs Farmhouse on Monday and the 4th graders went to Wompatuck for their Fitness Field Trip led by Mr. Thornton. We finished up MCAS testing for the 2023-2024 school year on Friday. Students enjoyed outdoor recess in the sun and many classes enjoyed extra time learning outside in the courtyard and around the building. What a wonderful week of learning at Cole School!
We had so many students nominated this week for Magnificent Meerkats! We are so proud of these students for consistently showing expected behaviors, being a good friend to others, demonstrating perseverance with academic challenges, and being the best version of themselves that they can be! Here are a few of the reasons for nominations this week:
- She is always willing to help a classmate in need. Today she was the first one to help a classmate when she was having a hard time with her Ipad. We love to see her setting the example and being a role model in sharing kindness and caring to others.
- He has been putting forth a significant effort to make good choices and have self-control even when no one is watching. I am so proud of him and am noticing how hard he is working every day!

Bus Ambassadors
By, Gianna Nigro, Addy Thorton, Raina Mclnnis, Lydia Niblack and Rose Berberian (all members of the Bus Ambassadors Club)
A piece of the bus ambassadors wanted to talk about bus behavior and expectations. When the bus meetings come up other groups in the Bus Ambassador Club will present expected bus behaviors too. We are all trying to get others to treat the bus rides correctly. First of all, we have observed that some students have been saying and doing some unexpected things on bus rides. They have been showing that this is ok, and it is not. Secondly, some students have been putting their hands on others and wrestling with others. Someone could play too rough and fall in the aisle. Thirdly, some students have been standing up and/or talking to others causing the bus to be loud and someone will eventually get hurt because the bus driver will be distracted. Also, please do not stand on the bus because the bus could stop short and you could fly out of your seat! Finally, people have been using pens or pencils and someone could get hurt by poking someone on accident while the bus is bumping and moving. We do not recommend any sharp writing materials, bus rules or not, for someone could get very hurt. We believe many students are getting bored and have been doing the unexpected behaviors above. We suggest the following activities that will be fine for the bus:
Reading a book
Talking quietly to a friend in your seat
Playing a game (not including pens, pencils, electronics etc.)
Looking out the window
Getting ready to get off the bus [making sure you say thank you to your bus driver]
Previewing homework
If you are in the front, help the bus driver
We would like you to talk to your child about the expectations on the bus and suggest the options above for something to do for the bus ride. Remember, bus actions are very important! Thank you for reading, have a nice day!!!
Counselor's Corner
1st graders did a great job wrapping up our unit on Courage this week at Community Meeting! We will be reviewing our year of "Kindness in the Classroom" curriculum at our last SEL lesson and during Cole Connections in the next few weeks.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and here are a few great resources to support you and your children: a Boston Children's Answers for Families live event about anxiety, and a summer SEL activity book for younger kids.

Specialists' Scoop
Grades K-2 started a throwing, catching and batting unit. Grades 3-5 played a fun and fast paced game called Team Handball. As a reward for their successful completion of the Get Fit Across America Program, 4th graders had a fitness field trip that included a hike through Wompatuck State Park and picnic lunch. The goals of the program were to encourage physical activity and organizational skills. Converting exercising into miles, the fourth graders generated enough miles to make it all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Way to go fourth graders!
It's that time of year! Next week will be our LAST book checkout of the 2023-24 school year. Please make every effort to help your students return all their books before the last two weeks of school. Lists and reminders will be going home soon. Thank you!

ART SHOW ETIQUETTE
We are very excited for our upcoming Art Show at the Cole School on May 29th. The Cole School students have worked so hard creating beautiful works of art for your viewing. When visiting an Art Show there are specific rules that should be followed to make it a successful event.
Please review the following with your child before attending the Art Show:
Look with your eyes, not with your hands. Do not touch any of the art work unless it is interactive.
Keep an arm’s length distance from the work.
Use quiet indoor voices.
Walk around the exhibit in a calm, slow manner.
No running in the halls.
No food or drink outside the cafeteria.
Families must stay together when walking around the art show.
No child should be roaming the halls unsupervised.
