Dear Parents, Whānau, and Caregivers,

We are excited and have nearly completed all our preparations to welcome our alumni to our 100th Open Day celebrations on Saturday, 8th August! It promises to be an unforgettable day filled with reflection, connection, and vibrant school spirit. Here is a preview of what we have in store:

  • Arts & Performances: Enjoy fantastic drama, dance, and music performances, alongside our student art exhibitions.

  • Sports Fixtures: Cheer on our school teams as they take on alumni teams.

  • New facilities: Check out our new Fitness Centre (formally the Girls’ Gym) and much improved replacement C-Block.

  • B-Block Decade Rooms & Library Archival Displays: Take a trip down memory lane. Each decade room features photos and historical displays capturing our rich 100-year history.

We are hosting a special "all comers" sing-along for our new school waiata, E Tipu, in the school hall. We invite all alumni and former staff to dust off your violins, guitars, brass instruments, or simply polish your vocal cords! Join us at 2:00 pm for rehearsal followed by the performance at 3:00 pm to create a truly unforgettable moment together. Download the sheet music by clicking here - everyone is welcome!

Preparing the decade room photo displays has been a fun experience. My office is currently full of memorabilia. A heartfelt thank you to the Hutt City Council (HCC) Archivist for sharing so many wonderful images of the Hutt throughout the decades. Looking through the archives reminded us of a very different time:

  • Life before the Hutt motorway and the new Ewan Bridge.

  • Days spent at the old Riddiford Pool—what a concrete jungle that was, with hardly any sun shade in sight!

  • Cricket games on the Hutt Rec looking a little more formal than they do now.

  • Old Ford Prefect cars parked in High Street.

On site, we have taken the opportunity of the 100th Celebrations to fully restore and refurbish the school’s sundial. The sundial was originally donated to honor long-standing staff member and caretaker Mr. H.J.M. Stirling (who served from 1926 to 1959), the sundial later became a sanctuary to recognise students and staff who passed away during their time at the school. Over the years, the names on the sundial had not been kept up to date, but we have now restored the list completely. A few of us felt quite emotional seeing names like Ross Sinclair and Jacinta Keenan now lovingly displayed.

We hope this restored landmark will offer a peaceful spot for visitors to pause, reflect, and remember those who remain forever part of our school family. We cannot wait to share these memories, music, and milestones with you all.

The new term is already in full swing here at school. Our winter sports season is reaching its end, with premier teams gearing up for finals and the upcoming Winter Tournament Week. We have 200 students travelling across Aotearoa to represent our school community. We wish them the very best of luck and remind all our athletes to compete with heart, uphold our school values, and remain respectful ambassadors for our college. Today, our players are gaining inspiration from Peter Miskimmin (pictured) - distinguished alumnus, Olympic hockey player, and former Head of Sport New Zealand.

We wish the very best of luck to Ioanna Koronaidis and Liv Woodmass as they supervise our talented students in the 48 Hour Film Festival this weekend. It promises to be a weekend of intense creativity - and absolutely no sleep.

Finally, today, I recently received a heartwarming phone call from a regular passenger on the Number 130 bus from Naenae. She wanted to share her high praise for one of our students, noting that they consistently stand to offer her a seat. It is wonderful to hear that our young people, proudly wearing their blazers and badges, are acting as such respectful ambassadors for our school in the wider community.

Ngā mihi nui,

Denise Johnson (Principal)

A friendly reminder that school will be closed for normal instruction on Friday, 7 August for a scheduled Learning from Home day, as staff prepare for our 100th Celebrations. Teachers will provide learning activities for students via Google Classroom, with students completing this work from home.

Learning Area Spotlight - Social Sciences Learning Area Spotlight - Social Sciences

The Social Sciences Learning Area had a busy end to Term 2, with a range of activities occurring across the different senior subject areas. These included Year 12 Business sales, a Year 11 local Geography trip to look at the Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi project and exciting future pathway opportunities for one of our Year 13 Accounting students.

Year 13 Accounting

Vinuki Abeyrathna (13WNDO) has been offered a place on the highly competitive KPMG Junior Accountant Programme. This is an early career pathway to join the Private Enterprise team and become a Chartered Accountant:

  • The aim of the programme is for team members to complete their accounting studies while they work and stay on with KPMG to progress to their Chartered Accounting qualification
  • This is real hands-on experience learning accounting in the real world
  • The opportunity to advance your career at a leading “Big 4” international accounting firm.

Year 12 Business Success

Our Year 12 Business students recently completed their final Business sales! Students worked hard to sell a range of innovative products to the community, including custom cell phone stands, biodegradable plant pots, arthritis heat packs, and colouring-in books for the Wellington Children's Hospital.

We are incredibly proud to announce that all profits from these ventures went to charity, raising over $1,200. Congratulations to all of the students for their hard work, entrepreneurial skills, and community spirit!

Year 11 Geography

- Hugh Williams (Geography Teacher)

The Year 11 Geography 'Hutt River Inaugural Field Trip' took place on Tuesday, 23 June. Travelling by school minivan, we looked at a range of locations along the Hutt River, starting with the site for the new pedestrian bridge that will link the new Melling Station to the C.B.D. Nearby, we observed where the new Melling Interchange Bridge foundations are beginning to take shape.

On the north side of the Melling Bridge, we stood on the stopbank to complete a field sketch to show the new rocklines that are in place to allow for a wider river channel. After a short stop at Avalon Park, we travelled across the Kennedy Good Bridge, then down along the dead-end riverside road by Belmont School, to understand how the bioengineering planting of willows and native plants is critical during times of flooding.

We would like to thank Sharyn Westlake, Principal Engineer for RiverLink (pictured with students and staff) for her willingness to give of her time and expertise for the benefit of our students. Of note is that we even made the Melling Transport Improvements/Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi — July 2026 update email sent to the wider community!

This field trip piggy-backed on an earlier visit to class in May by Hutt City Council Urban Planners, who came to collect feedback from our rangatahi on the proposed urban changes related to the completed RiverLink / Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi project.

Students were shown super-sized maps and artist impressions of the proposed urban transformation projects and the Urban Planners explained the thinking behind their plans. Perhaps our Year 11 Geography student feedback on these proposed changes to the Hutt City urban environment may indeed help shape the final 'City Centre Transformation' project.

Our students enjoyed their time in class and in the field and came away with first-hand knowledge of the changes afoot in their community that will affect their lives well in the future.

Volante Vocal Ensemble Shines at The Big Sing Volante Vocal Ensemble Shines at The Big Sing

Congratulations to the Volante Vocal Ensemble for their brilliant performances at The Big Sing

performed with absolute confidence.

The ensemble opened with an atmospheric rendition of Maisey Rika’s "Tangaroa Whakamautai",

accompanied by tutor Wade Reeve on guitar. The piece featured standout, heartfelt solos from

Giselle Charleson (13MO), Ray Heeley (13TW), Charlie Bristow (13BR), Brandon Chung (13BR), Mila Vella (13MO), and Joseph Moorman (13BH). The choir then sang "Vuelie" from Frozen, capturing its Scandinavian tribal quality, completely unaccompanied, a challenging feat for any choir. To close their set, they brought joy to the stage with "I Sing Because I'm Happy", backed by a band featuring students Joseph Loughnane (13BR) on piano and Ivan Golubev (13OH) on drums, with Wade switching to bass.

We are incredibly proud of how well Volante represented our school. Their hard work and

dedication over the year to date really paid off as they thoroughly impressed the audience and

adjudicators. A huge thank you to Anna Flaherty and Tim Fox for their help planning the trip, and to Bernard Beckett, Rei Stokes, Kylie Miller, and former staff members Anne Hubbard and Sheena Anglesey for all of their help in supporting the group on the day.

Want to Join Volante? Volante’s next performances will be for the upcoming School Centenary Celebrations. The choir is open to new members after that, from Wednesday, 12 August. If you would like to join this fantastic group, we rehearse on Wednesdays from 8.25am to 9.25am in the music room in the new C Block.
