PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Friday, November 14th
We had a wonderful, but busy week. Some of the highlights were honoring our community veterans on Tuesday, celebrating our amazing 5th Grade band students at Thomas Middle School on Wednesday evening, and enjoying a fun family night with our 3rd and 4th Graders on Thursday night!
Please remember that Thursday, November 20th is the last day for all PTA Reflections program submissions. More information about this can be found in this post.
I know it may seem far away, but please save the date for our PTA Sponsored, award winning "Patton Spreads Joy" event on Friday, December 5th. This is always such a lovely event and a great way for us to give back to our community. I hope many of you can attend.
Believe it or not, we have just one week until Fall Break! Our amazing student council has organized a fun "spirit week" to get us in the holiday mood while raising awareness of an important service project that helps us give to an organization working to end poverty and hunger. We know this time of year is busy, and our student council chose to be very creative with the themes for this week. We encourage everyone to participate in as much or as little as works for your family. I think many people are already looking forward to Friday and spending the day in comfy pajamas.
Enjoy the weekend!

VETERAN'S DAY CELEBRATIONS (NEW POST!)
We were honored to have 11 Veterans and their families join us in honor of Veterans Day on Tuesday. One of our current parents, Mr. John Healy, a 10 yr Veteran of the US Army and still serving in the Reserves, spoke to our Panthers about what it means to serve your country, be a veteran, and appreciating the things that make our country great. We were so grateful for his time and the insights he shared.
Our Patton Cub Scouts Pack 269 performed a flag ceremony, our 4th and 5th graders performed 2 meaningful patriotic songs, and we were introduced to our Veteran guests of honor by their Patton family members.
It was a wonderful assembly and we were so grateful to be able to honor those in our community who have served and show our appreciation to them. Please click HERE to view a slideshow of all our veteran community members.
COLD WEATHER RECESS (NEW POST!)
Please be mindful that students will go out for recess every day as long as the wind chill is above zero and it is not raining. Please ensure your Panthers come to school dressed for the weather. If there is snow on the ground, students will not be able to play on the field or the playground unless they are wearing snow pants, boots, a coat and gloves/mittens. They will need to remain on the blacktop only if they do not have appropriate snow gear. Gloves and hats are important when the weather is cold even if students choose not to bring boots and snow pants.
Students are encouraged to bring in a bag of snow gear each day "just in case" - this also helps minimize any classroom disruptions with items being dropped off after school has started. Please ensure all items are labeled clearly so we can reunite any lost gloves/hats/boots with their owners. You would be surprised how many stray items are found. Our lost and found is already overflowing again!
It is important to have students bring their snow gear bags home with them over the weekend so clothes can be washed and dried and "refreshed" for the following week! Snow gear does not fully dry when left in the bag.
When it comes to snow gear bags, please watch your child pack the bag at home. When a parent packs it, they are able to fold things nicely and fit everything in a compact bag. When kids try to put their snow gear back into the small bag, they often find it challenging. Sometimes, a slightly larger reusable shopping bag with a large opening helps kids keep track of all their gear.
Thank you so much for working with us on this front, it is hugely appreciated!
BOOK FAIR (NEW POST!)

PE: TRIMESTER 1 NEWSLETTER (2nd POST!)
STUDENT COUNCIL SPIRIT DAYS: 17th-21st NOVEMBER (2nd POST!)
Help raise money for Heifer International, an organization that helps families around the world by providing farm animals and training! Join in the fun and show your spirit all week long! Please bring in $2 (or any amount of your choice) for each spirit day.
Heifer International's Mission
We work to end hunger and poverty in partnership with the communities we serve. Our programs support entrepreneurs around the world, creating lasting change from the ground up.
It begins with a seed investment of livestock or agriculture, followed by mentorship to help project participants build a business, and ultimately to gain access to supply chains and markets.
These families are able to earn a living income and continuously lift up their communities as they train the next generation of leaders.
By supporting and training the world’s farmers, ranchers, and female business owners, we’re investing in a new breed of success.
FAMILIES IN NEED (FINAL POST!)
There are families in our community that could use a little extra help during the holiday season. Please contact our Social Worker, Barb Donahue, if your family is one that would benefit from this assistance. This is meant to be a "hand up, not a hand out".
The Patton Staff is collecting gift cards to various local stores. These gift cards will be distributed amongst the families that reply. Please contact Mrs. Donahue's confidential voicemail or email (see below) by November 21st if you are interested or if you have any questions.

HALLOWEEN CANDY DONATIONS (FINAL POST!)
Every year Mrs Hamilton collects any leftover Halloween candy and donates it to the Wheeling and Palatine food pantries. If you find yourself with lots of leftover candy and the temptation is too much to bear, please consider bringing it into the office.
The food pantries are so grateful for these donations every year.
LOST AND FOUND (FINAL POST!)
We will be donating all the Lost and Found on Friday, November 21st. If you recognize any items in the photograph please feel free to come in and collect them yourself or remind your student/s to come and take a look during the school day.
I have no doubt that many of these lovely warm coats and hoodies will come in handy as we head into the colder months and I would love to see these items reunited with their owners!
PTA REFLECTIONS 25-26: I BELONG (Updated Post!)
Calling all Patton Panthers to participate in this year's Reflections program. Students of all grades and abilities can create works of art reflecting upon this year's theme: “I Belong.”
Students can submit their completed works of art in one (or more) of the art categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. Students must individually submit artwork. Here are some ideas for how students can incorporate the theme for each category. Additionally, please carefully read through these specific PTA reflections rules and FAQs before submitting the final artwork.
Projects are due at the Patton Office on November 20th. Students are welcome to submit more than one project. Our Patton PTA proudly participates in the National PTA Reflections program, which encourages students to express themselves through the arts. Projects are completed at home. Last year, we had twenty talented students submit their works of art, and it was truly inspiring.
Please see this link to help think about the theme. Here is the link to the student entry form. You can also watch the videos below that offer insights from some of our very own Panthers who have taken part in the Reflections program before.
We look forward to all the creative entries from your student(s). Thank you again for your ongoing support.
All projects must be submitted to Patton’s main office by the end of school day on Thursday, November 20th.
Some of our Panthers who previously participated in Reflections shared about their experience to encourage other students to participate. We shared brief videos in morning announcements this week. Please view the below videos with your child if they are considering participating, but need more information or encouragement.
Feel free to reach out to Tina Shah (tinashah1@gmail.com) with any questions!
