Counselor Corner

Each day during Spartan Start students receive a 25 minute lesson that focuses on Social and Emotional Learning. In October, the focus is on bully prevention. This past week, we also watched a clip on Romelo and Melvin, and talked about compassion. Here is a great way to follow up at home.

Watch the video as a family: HERE

Discuss
Use these questions to start meaningful conversations about humanity.

  • What evidence of compassion did you see in the video?

  • What do you think about how Romelo showed compassion to Melvin?

  • What would your home, community, and world look like if we all showed more compassion like Romelo?

Activity

  • Discuss someone who your family knows who could use some compassion. It could be a family member, friend, neighbor, or community member.

  • Decide on an act of kindness to show them, such as making them a meal, writing a heartfelt card, or visiting them to let them know they are cared about.

  • Encourage each family member to participate in the activity and discuss how it feels to show compassion towards others.

Our amazing social studies department has worked to bring a Kids Voting opportunity here to SMS on November 5. We have the supplies, the room, and the activities.

We need your help! To make this mock voting experience successful, we need 8 adult volunteers to run the following:

  • 4 adults for registration / sign in
  • 2 adults for handing out ballots
  • 2 adults for Ballot Box management and giving out "I voted" stickers

We would need people here by 8:15 to get set up in the SMS multipurpose room and stay until 3:00pm. People can work in shifts as long as all stations have someone present throughout the day.

Please reach out to anyone you think would be willing to help!

Appreciate all you do to support our school.

Attendance Matters!

Class starts each day with students in classrooms by 7:55am. The warning bell rings at 7:50am. To see if your child has been tardy to any of their classes, check PowerSchool to view your child’s attendance. If you see any errors, please contact Ms. Charity.

**Our school day ends at 3:06pm. Unless your student is registered for an after school activity, they must leave the building by 3:30pm.**

Food Service

Breakfast and dinner at SMS continue to be free for all students, but lunch is paid. We encourage all families to apply for free and reduced lunch. Even if you are not eligible, your application helps our school. You can apply multiple times throughout the school year, especially if your home situation changes. You can easily add funds into your student's lunch account through My School Bucks.

Teachers will use comments and/or score in PowerSchool to share with families how their child is doing. Looking for comments or feedback in PowerSchool? Here is a quick guide to help you navigate comments and feedback in the PowerSchool Parent Portal.

Remember that logging into any web browser is best, while looking at grades in PowerSchool. Skip the app.

On November 5th, our school district community members will be asked if they will invest in Superior's public schools with a five-year tax levy. Property taxes would increase an additional $7 a year per $100,000 property value for the first two years. In years 3-5, homeowners would see an average increase of $24 per $100,000 in property value per year.

If passed, the operational referendum will help maintain current class sizes and staffing levels, keep current district programs, and fund critical building maintenance. If the referendum were to fail, the school district would have to make more significant cuts to staff, increase class sizes, and reduce programming.

We are actively working to answer your questions as the November election approaches. If you have a question, please review our Frequently Asked Questions sheet.

For more information about the referendum, please see our referendum website.
