Hickory Elementary
Family Newsletter- July 2025
Dear Hickory Families,
I hope you're enjoying the summer months filled with rest, fun, and special moments together!
As we take a pause before the new school year begins, I want to thank you for your continued support and partnership. Your involvement in your child’s education—whether through communication with teachers, attending school events, or simply talking about their day—makes a powerful difference. When families and schools work together, children thrive both academically and emotionally.
At Hickory, we believe that education is a team effort. We are so grateful for the role you play in that team, and we’re excited to continue building that partnership in the year ahead. We’ll be hosting a few summer pop-up events to connect before the school year begins—please see more information below and join us if you can!
We’re already planning for a wonderful year full of learning, growth, and community. Your involvement matters, and we’re so thankful to have you with us on this journey.

School Attendance
The goal of Hickory Elementary and every school in WCPS is that each child experiences success. Research shows that excused and unexcused absences have the same negative impact on academic performance. WCPS attendance policy states that a student should miss no more than twelve absences per school year. A child is chronically absent if he or she misses just two days a month. Most critically, it is important to recognize that any day a student is absent, he or she misses valuable instruction which builds the foundation for the future.
This year we will be promoting consistent student attendance. Stay tuned for more information!
